Marvel Legends Grey Beast Retro Figure Revealed & Up for Order!

I haven’t even finished up my coverage of the 2020 New York Toy Fair mega-show that occurred just over a week ago, but Hasbro is already at it again with an all-new figure up for pre-order that wasn’t even announced at Toy Fair! If you missed out on last year’s blue Beast or were disappointed he came without a friendlier alternate head (or other accessories), then this may be for you: the Retro X-Men Marvel Legends Grey Beast figure is now up for order!

Marvel Legends Retro Beast Figure Packaged Grey

When Hasbro released the newly-tooled X-Men Legends Beast figure last year, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that we’d have to see much of that tooling repurposed in the near future in order for Hasbro to get their money’s worth out of the expense.

And hey, what could possibly be a more natural and easier way to reuse those molds than by turning the blue Beast grey… right? Thus, to the surprise of no one (other than the unexpectedย  timing right after NY Toy Fair), Hasbro revealed a retro gray Beast Legends figure today!

But wait…! This isn’t just a repaint! No, in this case, we’re also getting three new accessories that I think will really make a difference in motivating collectors to pick up an unusual color variant that they otherwise might not.

The most obvious new inclusion with this release is an all-new interchangeable head. Many collectors (including me!) weren’t thrilled with just the “feral” head that came with the 2019 blue Beast figure, and this time out we get an extra “friendlier” Hank McCoy head as a pack-in as well. This more rational-looking Beast is my preferred look for the character, so I’m thrilled to get this new head here.

In addition, we get eyeglasses to make Hank look more refined and book smart… and a book for Beast to hold, demonstrating his scholarly inclinations! I think these three new add-ins greatly enhance ML Retro Grey Beast, and my only disappointment here is that we aren’t getting the new head in blue as well for our old figure. Hasbro takes care of us, though, so I’d like to think they have a plan in mind to get us this great portrait for the existing blue figure!

The Marvel Legends Retro Beast figure is now up for order, and is scheduled to ship out in June 2020. This is an obscure look for the character, but given that the demand wasn’t met for last year’s Hank McCoy, I think this could be another surprise hot seller for Hasbro.

How do you feel about the third Marvel Legends X-Men Beast in the past year, collectors? Do the new accessories earn your dollars once again, or is the gray-hued variation of Beast a release you feel like you can live without?

  1. Finally! A Legends version of the MU figure from some years back with proper articulation. This version in a darker blue with the book, glasses, and an added lab coat would give us a definite Avengers/Defenders 70s/80s Beast. Pack in a Safari Jacket Wonder Man in the same assortment and I would be on cloud nine!

    • They seem to be having supply issues this year (or is that just usual for Hasbro)? Stores just list figures online only to cancel them later. I have had four cancellations from three retailers for Iron Patriot alone. I know they are done with that one, but Amazon keeps trying to list it.

Doom is still hard to come by. I thought that one would make its presence known before they phased it out, but I can’t yet tell if Hasbro is still shipping them.

Beast wasn’t this bad. I got one for $17.76 at Walmart online. It even looked case fresh.

  2. Looks like the glasses are meant only for holding in his hand and not for his face. (I don’t see how they could possibly stick onto his face.

  3. I think the “passive” head looks too skinny/thin. I like the book and the glasses accessories, but that’s about it. I have no ties with Grey Beast. Easy pass!

  4. I will buy this. But I’m still waiting for my proper Beast from Defenders/Avengers. An Angel in red and white costume would be nice along with that. Oooh… Defenders. Hadn’t thought much about that. There’s already Hellcat, Valkyrie, Ice Man, and Night Hawk. Original members of Doctor Strange, Namor, and Hulk. Silver Surfer. So, I need a Gargoyle, Moondragon, and most of all – Son of Satan!!! And OH… give me as a BAF: Overmind. There’s a wave that’s designed for lovers of the classic old comics.

  5. The accessories and new head are great, but the short-lived grey fur phase of Beast is a very obscure look to make a figure for. I think he only had the grey fur for a handful of issues and wasn’t part of any team at the time. I assume we’ll get another blue beast at some point that includes these new parts. I assume a lot of folks will buy these and repaint the new head, either for themselves or to sell online.

  6. I like the new accessories, but the new head is awful…. It looks like the grandpa from the Monsters Family Show

    • You’re right! I thought the same thing, but I kept thinking of Uncle Fester, but yeah, it’s Grandpa from the Munsters!

    • “It looks like the grandpa from the Monsters Family Show”

Nerd card revoked. Hand in immediately.

  7. I think the book would make an excellent accessory for Nightcrawler for those who enjoy his Catholic faith.

  8. I’ve got an issue of Avengers vol I #136 (I believe), where Beast fought Iron Man. And he had grey fur for a span of 2 or 3 issues. Other than that, I have no connection to this iteration of Beast so it’s an easy pass.

I can’t get on board like Dabid on that new head sculpt. It looks a bit too narrow, and IMO it doesn’t even look like the “passive” version of the angry head. Now that I look closer, they look like heads from 2 different Beast figures. ๐Ÿ˜‘

    • I think itโ€™ll make for a great Avengers Perez Beast head if recolored in blue!

      • I can definitely see that! But to include both heads in the same package….hmmmm, IDK.

The passive head is clean-shaven—-well, as clean-shaven as a furry Beast can get—but the “angry” head has sideburns! ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…

  9. I guess the question I would have is:
When Beast gets angry, does he magically grow muttonchops?

I have to move this figure into the “ridiculous” category ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…

  10. Does anyone know if the glasses actually fit onto the passive head sculpt, or are they meant to be held in hand as another poster commented?
