Although there were few New York Comic Con exclusives this year—perhaps because no one was certain if there would be an event at all, given the long-lasting global pandemic—there was at least one cool Marvel exclusive collectible in honor of the show: a limited-edition X-Force Deadpool variant bust by Diamond Select Toys. But displaying and taking orders for that Deadpool wasn’t the only treat Diamond had for fans—they also revealed concept art for a long-demanded Marvel Select action figure: Apocalypse!
In the decade and a half that Diamond Select has been releasing 7” scale Marvel action figures in their Marvel Select figure line, they’ve created quite a few toys of popular X-Men mainstays such as Wolverine, Cyclops, Beast, Gambit, Psylocke and more. In addition, there have been figurines of many of the X-Men’s greatest foes, including Magneto, Juggernaut (one of the biggest DST figures ever) and Sabretooth. But there’s one X-adversary fans have been particularly demanding for the last decade-plus, and it was announced at NYCC 2021 that Marvel Select Apocalypse is officially joining the line.
While it was still too early in development to show off a physical prototype of the Darwinian-devout mutant, Diamond did share concept art of the Apocalypse Select figure during their New York Comic Con panel. This Apocalypse figure will feature the character’s signature tubes/coils and his giant “A” belt buckle.
Fans who missed the now-prohibitively-expensive Marvel Legends Apocalypse will be thrilled to see this classic-styled action figure of En Sabah Nur available for about 30 bucks from DST sometime in the next year or so. The 7” scale is also perfect for him, as most fans will want Apocalypse to tower over their Hasbro X-Men. Even just as a drawing, this is looking like a phenomenal Apocalypse figurine so far.
And while all 250 pieces of the Deadpool X-Force NYCC weren’t ready in time to bring to the show, DST did bring the physical prototype of the sculpture and opened up pre-orders for it. Once the full supply of this statue is ready, it will ship straight to fans’ homes—without having to be carried around a crowded convention center all day.
Like the red version of this piece, Deadpool is dual-wielding katanas and has been sculpted by Juan Pitluk.
The exclusive Deadpool bust retails for a mere $70, and is available to order on the Diamond Select Toys website now while they last. With such a low edition size for an iconic version of Wade Wilson, that’s not likely to be all that long.
What do you think of these high profile Marvel collectibles from the 2021 NYCC? Is this looking like the Apocalypse Marvel Select figure you always wanted, based off of the early conceptual artwork? And will you be ordering one of the limited edition of 250 X-Force Deadpool busts for your own home collection?
