Though Hasbro’s new-for-2014 “Marvel Super Hero Mashers” action figures aren’t tops on most collectors’ lists, the line seems to be at least moderately well-received at retail, where I’m seeing most characters (that aren’t Hawkeye) sold out on a regular basis. And it’s a lucky thing that the line is selling decently so far, as Hasbro has several more assortments planned for the first half of 2014, including the recently-announced Marvel Super Hero Mashers Venom, Falcon Loki, Doc Ock and Green Goblin figures!
We’ll be getting a Marvel Super Hero Mashers Series 2 of both basic and deluxe figures, as well as “Battle Packs” two-packs and even vehicle packs. Man–I wish Hasbro had been pushing Marvel Legends and Marvel Universe this hard!
The regular Marvel Super Hero Mashers Series 2 figures will consist of:
Marvel Super Hero Mashers Green Goblin
While the Green Goblin is Spider-Man’s greatest foe (though not necessarily most popular), I’m a bit surprised to see Osborn get his turn at being a Superhero Masher before Electro. I’d be willing to bet we see a Superhero Mashers Electro of some sort later this year. Green Goblin comes with multiple pumpkin bombs he can hold.
Marvel Super Hero Mashers Marvel NOW Iron Man
Iron Man makes a return appearance in Super Hero Mashers form, this time wearing his Marvel NOW! armor. I don’t know that a lot of the kids interested in these toys are buying Marvel NOW comics, but I think they’ll be attracted to the black and gold armor nonetheless. This should sell well in stores, despite the fact that his repulsor blast looks like a fountain of cherry soda being squirted out of the Iron Man suit.
Marvel Super Hero Mashers Brown Costume Wolverine
An all-time classic outfit, Brown Costume Wolverine is another costume that I expect kids won’t be terribly familiar with, but this might actually score some points with adults. I would think Logan’s claws would serve him better than swords ever would, but I guess Wolvey wanted to try something different for his second Super Hero Mashers appearance.
The Marvel Superhero Mashers Deluxe Series 2 figures will be:
Marvel Superhero Mashers Falcon: Sam Wilson has traditionally not been a hot-selling figure, but Marvel is obviously betting that The Falcon’s appearances in the Avengers Assemble cartoon and his big role in the Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie will change that. I’ve loved the classic red and white Falcon costume since the Secret Wars toys in the 80’s, so I’m excited to see Falcon make an entrance to the Super Hero Mashers line.
Marvel SuperHero Mashers Venom: Venom is a bulky and amorphous character to begin with, making him a fantastic choice for this lineup. Kids and adults alike love Venom, and this figure looks a bit more acceptable to me than many of the Marvel Mashers action figures. And as Venom comes with a Carnage arm, it looks like we’ll be seeing a Carnage Mashers figure before too soon! Awesome!
Marvel Superhero Mashers Figure and Vehicle Wave 1
I have no problem with the Captain America Mashers figure coming with a motorcycle–it’s a natural pairing, after all–but Iron Man coming with a motorcycle defies all logic. I’m reasonably certain Iron Man would have far better speed and mobility, you know–flying–to where he needs to be. But hey–at least it’s a Marvel Mashers Silver Centurion Iron Man! Score one for the classic fans.
And finally, Marvel Super Hero Mashers Battle Packs Series 1
At this point, I’m pretty sure most any toy company could sell me a Loki action figure regardless of any kind, regardless of what it looks like. That said, I’m not thrilled that, evidently, you’ll need to buy both the Superhero Mashers Hulk vs. Loki and Spider-Man vs. Doc Ock sets to complete the Loki figure. Whoever came up with the idea of splitting the parts for these figures across multiple packs in an evil, evil mastermind.
And that’s a wrap for the sum of what we’re likely to learn about the Hasbro Marvel Superhero Mashers toys until the New York Toy Fair 2014 in two weeks. What do you think, Marvel collectors? Are you warming up to this line at all and planning to pick up one or two of these new figures, or are you still keeping a safe distance from the increasingly-expansive Marvel Mashers figures?
These are ok. Since they are legends scale, I have been using them to army build “doombots”. However, I find myself planning on buying other characters especially since they are Reasonably priced!
I love these things. Have all but Iron Man.
