As far as Disney Vinylmation collection goes, 2014 has been the quietest year for me since Disney began the line six years ago. There haven’t been many enticing Vinylmation sets released this year, and as a result my interest has waned quite a bit. But just when I thought I might be out, Disney has pulled me back in–with a vengeance! As a sequel to last year’s best-selling Disney Vinylmation Marvel Series 1 (which now sells for a crazy $250 for a set of 12 on the aftermarket), Disney has just unveiled a new set coming out in under a month: the Marvel Vinylmation Spider-Man Series!
Last year’s Disney Vinylmation Marvel Series 1 set of figures was Avengers-themed, and while it was definitely packed with popular headliners, I felt like the series was a tad bloated with characters I already have toys of a million times over. Coupled with the fact that Disney went back and forth several times on whether or not the Marvel Vinylmation figures would be available in Disney Stores outside the parks at all, and I soured a little bit on that series.
But this year’s Marvel Vinylmation Series 2 set corrects the mistakes of the past, giving us not only ‘A’-List characters like Spider-Man and Venom, but classic villains like Mysterio and supporting cast members like J. Jonah Jameson and Mary Jane Watson Parker!
The complete lineup of the Disney Vinylmation Spider-Man Series is as follows:
- Marvel Vinylmation Spider-Man
- Marvel Vinylmation Green Goblin
- Marvel Vinylmation Lizard
- Marvel Vinylmation Electro
- Marvel Vinylmation Mysterio
- Marvel Vinylmation Rhino
- Marvel Vinylmation Kraven the Hunter
- Marvel Vinylmation Venom
- Marvel Vinylmation Black Cat
- Marvel Vinylmation Mary Jane Watson
- Marvel Vinylmation J. Jonah Jameson
- Marvel Vinylmation Spider-Man Chaser Figure (1 Per Case)
As with all Disney Vinylmation blind box series, there will be a Vinylmation Spider-Man Mystery Chaser figure packed at one per case of twenty-four. My best guess for the Vinylmation Spider-Man chaser is that it will be a Vinylmation Carnage, Doctor Octopus (“but I have been known to be wrong–from time to time”).
I also would be very surprised if there wasn’t a Vinylmation Spider-Man variant Black Costume Spider-Man randomly inserted into cases, but we won’t know for sure until the set goes up for sale and collectors post what they pulled.
The Disney Vinylmation Marvel Series 2 Spider-Man figure blind boxes and cases will be available for order online and at the Disney Parks on August 29th, 2014. The Vinylmation Marvel Series 1 released last year sold out lightning-fast and has almost doubled in value, so you’re best off trying to decide if you want to collect the Spider-Man Vinylmation Series well before its release date–Disney only does one production run of these figures, and they will sell out in a week or two.
What do you think of the Spider-Man Vinylmation Series, Marvel collectors? I’ve got such an extensive Vinylmation collection that I couldn’t bring myself to skip this series if I wanted to (and I don’t), but will any of you be picking up some Vinylmation Spider-Man blind boxes (or a whole case) come August 29th?
These are…ridiculous.
