REVIEW: X-Men Marvel Legends Wolverine Tiger Stripe Figure

Continuing along in my week of reviews completing the 2018 Marvel Legends X-Men Apocalypse series, we come to the fifth 6” Wolverine figure that Hasbro has released in the last two years. While some people might be burning out on ol’ Logan just a hair at this point, I imagine this latest version is one that very few X-Men fans will be able to pass up: the 2018 Tiger Stripe Wolverine X-Men Legends figure is now available! Is this the definitive version of this costumed Wolverine that fans have been waiting for?

X-Men Legends Wolverine Review Tiger Stripe

I’m a bit of a weirdo in that Wolverine is a good distance far down my list of favorite X-Men characters. Even so, Wolverine is such a crucial and prominent member of almost every X-Men roster that I own more action figures of him than any other mutant in the whole Marvel universe.

Box Back Marvel Legends Wolverine 6" Figure Apocalypse SeriesI’ve been buying Tiger Stripe Wolverine figures (I won’t call this the “Jim Lee costume” since I don’t want Rob Liefeld to yell at me again) since I was a pre-teen, and have accumulated quite a few over the years.

2018 X-Men Legends Apocalypse Series Wolverine PackagedBut despite already owning a small army of toys of this costumed version of Logan, I’m psyched about this brand-new X-Men Marvel Legends Wolverine Apocalypse Series 6” figure—because it tops every other version ever made.

Close-Up of 90s X-Men Wolverine Legends FigureThe singular most important aspect of most action figures is the head sculpt, and Hasbro brought their ‘A’-game for this Tiger Stripe Wolverine Legends figure. He’s got the teeth-bared, battle-ready ferocious expression that’s arguably the most recognizable look for that era, and the proportions of the mask, chin and eyes are all sheer perfection.

Size Comparison Marvel Legends Apocalypse Series Sabertooth and Wolverine FiguresWhat else is sheer perfection is the size and scale of this figure. Logan might be the most popular X-Men member, but he definitely ain’t the tallest, bub. While some companies have flubbed that fact over the years, Hasbro hit the nail on the head by making Wolverine about 5.5” from his feet to the top of his head (not the tips of his mask).

Hasbro X-Men Legends Apocalypse Series Figure with Claws RaisedIt’s really important that Wolverine be shorter than your usual dude to look properly scaled, whether it’s when posed with the rest of the X-Men or when facing off with Sabertooth. Hasbro accounted for that and the result is a wonderfully scaled Logan. Thanks, Hasbro!

2018 X-Men Legends Wolverine Hasbro Six Inch FigureWe’ve come to expect outstanding articulation from Marvel Legends figures, but this new X-Men Legends Wolverine is in the upper echelon of all Legends as far as articulation goes.

Tiger Stripe Wolverine Marvel Legengs 6" Figure with Arms in AirEvery standard point of poseability is present and unhindered, with the crucial addition of the butterfly swivel shoulders also making an appearance. The butterfly swivel joints let Logan cross his arms and be put into more battle poses than any previous six inch version of the character. I can’t wait to see these butterfly swivels expanded to more characters!

Back of Marvel Legends X-Men Wolverine 90s Costume FigureQC on the base figure is likewise excellent. Paint apps are all neat and tidy, and the joints are tight with no floppiness. The red belt add-on piece is perfectly tight and stays in place with no difficulties whatsoever.

Wolverine Marvel Legends Apocalypse Series Figure with Bent ClawsReally, the only QC issue to speak of is with the claws. Wolverine’s claws have a teeny bit of flexibility, which is good for some posing opportunities—but also bad because the claws can get nudged out of place easily and even fall out and be lost.

Wolverine Marvel Legends 2018 Figure with Two Claws Popped on SabertoothI lost the middle claw of my figure’s left hand almost immediately and never found it, which is why it’s absent in almost every photo. You’ll want to take care to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen to you—it’s unlikely, but something to watch out for.

Marvel Legends X-Men 2018 Wolverine Figure and Accessories Apocalypse CoilsAccessories-wise, Apocalypse Series Wolverines come with the coils/tubes of the Apocalypse Build-A-Figure and a pair of interchangeable hands with retracted claws.

Marvel Legends Apocalypse Series Wolverine with Fists Claws RetractedI don’t think many folks are going to want to display their Wolverine going all Street Fighter Ryu with his claws retracted, but hey—it’s nice having that option, right? I’d have preferred a pack-in unmasked head for Logan, but maybe Hasbro is saving that for another Tiger Stripe release down the road.

Review Marvel Legends X-Men Wolverine Apocalypse Series FigureOverall: It’s taken Hasbro over a decade to do so, but they’ve finally produced the definitive Marvel Legends Tiger Stripe Wolverine six inch figure. From the extra set of hands with retracted claws to the spot-on perfect masked portrait to the butterfly swivel elbows, Hasbro has pulled out all the stops here.

I would have liked if the claws were stiffer and less prone to being pushed out of place—and an unmasked Logan head sculpt being packed in—but those are minor nitpicks with a toy that’s otherwise extraordinarily well-done. I simply cannot fathom any 90s X-Men fan passing on what’s easily the best 6” Wolverine figure in this costume ever made.

REVIEW: X-Men Marvel Legends Wolverine Tiger Stripe Figure — 11 Comments

  1. I do this Hasbro needs to stop packing the clawless hands as accessories since the claws on the packed hand are removable. It just seems superfluous and I’d rather get another head or some gesturing hands.

  2. I think it’s a great figure, but I still have a headless juggernaut due to the rarity of the last one. But since you lost the one claw, do you still have a second figure to use instead, since he is two per case?

  3. Great figure, definitely beats the old astonishing wolverine figure by a mile! Hope you find that claw, I lost one of X-23’s claws at one point but it did turn up eventually. I do like the adjustability of the claws overall. One minor nitpick is that i think the points of his mask taper to closely to the side of his head – I’ve seen people adjusting with the boiling method and may give it a try, especially since i have an extra in case I screw up (which otherwise I’m giving to my friend’s kid for his birthday).

Overall this has been a great wave, certainly the one I was looking forward to most this year.. but a lot of the waves I wasn’t as enthusiastic about have really won me over. What a year for ML collectors!

  4. Took me a minute to figure out who the 5th wolverine figure was…. old man Logan. I guess I just see him as wolverine anymore.

  5. good figure, as all the recent Wolvies have been. Just never liked the tiger stripe costume. Never made sense to the character. Never matched his personality, and it looks like a cat not a wolverine. Gimme the brown suit any day. Much cooler, and much more logical.

  6. Sorry to see that your Wolverine lost a claw! Mine has one claw that seems really loose too. I’ve heard that they are removable but how true is that really? I am really nervous to yank on them for fear that I’ll have to superglue it back into place.

I’m really, really happy with the way that this figure turned out. I will always have an attachment to this look for Wolvie, even though its bright color scheme just makes no sense lol.

    • yes you can remove the claws safely, no worries there:) they can pop in and out easily, which makes no sense for the non-bladed hands being included in the end;)

  7. With regards to the claws, I discovered an interesting thing: If you have the Puck wave Wolverine or the Jubilee wave Wolverine, you can swap their claws with this one’s.
The claws on the older figures have larger, rounded pegs which fit tight and snug in Tiger-Stripe Wolvie’s peg holes; at the same time these new claws fit fairly well in the older figures because those peg holes are deeper and designed more like grooves.

  8. Did they ever release a ML Wolverine in the classic orange suit? That would be an awesome fig to have.

  9. If they just packed extra claws eventually in some future release, that would work. It’s not like they’re going to stop producing Wolverine figures anytime soon. A more niche design that had some fun accessories would make me happy. Maybe a first appearance? Patch? They’ve already made so many good, different variations that I own my personal favorites. Turns out, I have no idea which ones are the most sought after now.
