Marvel Legends are far and away the most popular line of Marvel figures coming out today, but they’re also far from the only Marvel toys and collectibles out there. I had a chance to visit with most of the other major Marvel toy companies during New York Toy Fair 2018, and was very impressed by many figures and statues that I saw. Here’s my personal, totally opinion-based Top 10 Non-Legends Marvel Toys revealed at this year’s Toy Fair…
10. ONE:12 Collective Hela (Mezco Toyz)
One of the biggest surprises at New York Toy Fair 2018 was the reveal of a character I never expected would get the Mezco ONE:12 Collective treatment: movie Hela from Thor Ragnarok! The Cate Blanchett likeness is there and the fabric costume looks tremendous. This is a big, unexpected win for Mezco.
9. Wolverine Collector’s Gallery Statues (Gentle Giant Ltd.)
These were only early prototypes on display at Toy Fair, but I think there’s definitely room in the collecting landscape for more reasonably-priced, museum-posed resin Marvel statues like these. I don’t think I need all four of these, but I’m definitely thinking about that Old Man Logan.
8. Maximum Carnage Minimates (Diamond Select Toys)
Ordinarily this list would probably be chock full of DST Marvel Select figures, but because of the embargo on talking about Infinity War figures, I only saw one new Select at the show: Beast (who I wasn’t really crazy about the head sculpt on).
Even so, this list will still be dominated by Diamond Select Toys, with their first placement going to their Marvel Minimates Series 76 Maximium Carnage Set. Doppelgänger Spider? Demogoblin? Cloak and Dagger? Shriek Build-A-Figure?! Uh, yeah—count me in. One of the most compelling Minimates sets in quite a while!
7. Marvel Gallery Carnage & Venom Statues
I could have put 5 Marvel Gallery statues on this list without batting an eye, as I love DST’s low-priced PVC statue line to death, but I’m going to limit Marvel Gallery to one entry. That said, I’m putting two different statues as this one entry, just because I can.
I think the Diamond Select Carnage Gallery Statue captures the character perfectly at an affordable price (~$45), while the Marvel Gallery Venom gives us one of the craziest, most unique Venom statues we’ve ever seen. I’m looking forward to the PO for these two pieces a lot.
6. Play Arts Kai X-23 Wolverine (Square-Enix)
While we didn’t see the first Marvel Legends X-23 Wolverine figure at Toy Fair like I expected that we would, we did get to see the first super-articulated Wolverine X-23 figure from another company: Square-Enix!
SE has mostly played it safe with the Marvel Play Arts Kai figure line, so seeing a modern character like X-23 is a legit shocker. Play Arts X-23 is an amazing selection, and I can’t wait to see this prototype painted up.
5. Deadpool Vinyl Figures (Funko)
Just when you thought Funko had done every possible variation of Deadpool that anyone would want to buy, Funko goes and hits us up with Bob Rosspool. Thanks for the best celebrity/superhero mashup ever, Funko.
I’m cheating and just including all the Funko Deadpools on this list as one entry, because there are plenty of cool varieties and I think folks will have their personal favorites. While I normally dislike the VYNL style, I particularly like the VYNL Deadpool and Cable two-pack that’s up for order now.
4. ONE:12 Collective Netflix Punisher (Mezco Toyz)
I’m not a huge fan of the Netflix Punisher series myself (stop throwing those tomatoes at me, please), but I know quality when I see it, and this ONE:12 Collective Punisher Netflix figure is quality.
The Jon Bernthal portrait on this 6” figure is stupendous, and the costume looks almost Hot Toys-level. Every ONE:12 Collective Punisher figures to-date has sold out and exploded on the aftermarket, and I think this one will be no exception.
3. Marvel Premier Collection Magneto (Diamond Select Toys)
While there have been plenty of Magneto statues released over the years, pretty much all of them will set you back $500 or (sometimes much) more these days. The timing is ripe for a reasonably-priced, 1:6 Classic Magneto Statue, and Diamond Select Toys is delivering. This isn’t getting much hype coming out of Toy Fair, but I think it looked great in person and will be a dark horse best-seller.
2. X-Men Danger Room Sessions Storm Statue (Kotobukiya)
That said, this Danger Room Sessions Storm statue has been worth the wait–she’s in her best-known animated series white costume, and the whirlwind effects piece and flying pose are both excellent. 2018 is going to be an outstanding year for X-Men fans.
1. Marvel Premier Collection Domino Statue (Diamond Select Toys)
The Marvel Premier Collection Cable & Deadpool statues were my “Best in the Show” at New York Comic-Con 2017, so I don’t think anyone should be too stunned that the third and final statue in the set is my “Best in the Show” for New York Toy Fair 2018. The sculpting and paint detail, the design of the costume, the pose… everything about this Marvel Premier Collection Domino statue is full of win. It’s going to be a tough choice when I eventually have to choose my overall best statue of 2018!
…And that’s a wrap for my second and final 2018 Toy Fair Top 10 list! You can check out my Marvel Legends Top 10 here, and be sure to leave a reply if your personal list of favorites from the event differs from mine (which it almost certainly will!).
