X-Men collectibles look to be having a banner year in 2024 to coincide with the most major pieces of new Marvel media known for the year being X-related. Diamond Select Toys is ready to give X-fans more love as well, as 2 of their 3 new Marvel collectibles for the month are also X-centric: the Marvel Gallery 90s Wolverine PVC, X-Men Animated Morph bust and Spider-Man 2 Gallery Miles Morales statue are all up for order now!
With no recent conventions or events for DST to spotlight upcoming products at, I was really curious what items would be on the menu for this round of solicits.
But while Diamond Select’s most popular Marvel line (Marvel Select) and my two favorite ones (Skottie Young Marvel Animated and Legends in 3D 1:2 busts) are sitting this month out, I think DST has still served up a trifecta of items that will be popular with fandom.
The most “mainstream” new collectible overall is the new 1990s Wolverine Gallery figure/statue, this is the second Tiger Stripe Wolverine PVC in the long-running series, but also the first unmasked one (and the first battle-damaged one). This actually reminds me of the first Toybiz Battle-Damaged Wolverine figure from the 90s a bit, a toy I have (probably overly) fond memories of.
The Savage Land-like Jungle Base fits the piece well, and although the MSRP of these PVCs in general has risen over the years, I think the sub-$60 price-tag is still a good value for a unique-tooled 11” figure. I think fans who prefer unmasked Logan to masked Wolverine are really going to dig this.
Continuing on the X-Men theme, the new solicits also bring us the first ever resin product of Morph in the form of the X-Men Animated Morph mini bust. The X-Men TAS busts line has gone farther than I think anyone ever expected, giving us guest stars like Apocalypse, Psylocke and Mystique, and now the last member of the original team from the show.
I adored Morph as a kid and his Toybiz action figure, and I’m delighted to get a resin bust of him now with the same change-o-head feature as the vintage toy. I’ll be sticking to normal Morph in my display as opposed to raccoon-eyed evil Morph, but I respect DST for making both options in one and not holding out for an exclusive version.
I think it’s worth noting that we may be seeing the first sign of weakness in this bust line here, as Morph is limited to just 2000 pieces—all the previous characters have been LE 3000. It remains to be seen if this edition cut will be standard going forward or is just for Morph.
Finally, on a less mutant-related note, we have a GamerVerse Gallery Miles Morales statue based on last year’s massively popular PS5 Spider-Man 2 game.
This 10” PVC figure features Miles dynamically hurling himself over a terrain base covered with crawling symbiote oozes. The combination of the smoke, symbiote goop, electrical effects and debris on the base coalesce better than I would expect, giving this diorama an enhanced feeling of dynamic motion. I think this really works well as a representation of the action game.
All of the “extra” add-ons to this statue come at a price, though—an extra 20 bucks above the standard Gallery MSRP, to be exact. At a penny under 80 bucks I still think the pricing on this is fair, but I have no doubt it’d sell better at $59.99. A nice diorama, nonetheless.
The Marvel Gallery Wolverine 90s statue, Spider-Man 2 Gallery Miles Morales diorama and Morph X-Men Animated bust are all up for PO now and scheduled for a Q4 2024 release. Of the 3, only Morph is a limited edition. Will you be adding any of this trio of new DST Marvel memorabilia to your collections, Marvel collectors? Do you think the X-Men Animated busts line is puttering out, or do you still want to see more characters added in the future?
