Square-Enix shocked us by unveiling three all-new Marvel Play Arts Kai variants (that’s two more than I expected) at the New York Toy Fair 2015 back in February, and has continued to tantalize Marvel collectors with glimpses of Spider-Man’s most popular villain ever since.

I usually don’t report on XM Studios Marvel statues. Not because they’re not beautiful (they are), and not because they’re expensive (they are), but because they’re literally near-impossible for most folks stateside to acquire. I know most folks have been overall very happy with the last few Marvel Legends Thor figures that Hasbro has released, but I’ve never been fully satisfied. As nice as those figures are, I don’t feel like they capture the power and majesty of the God of Thunder. But where I feel like Hasbro falls a tad short, coming off of over a decade of producing Final Fantasy figures, Square-Enix knows exactly how to make a figure look mythic! And as part of their new-for-2015 Variant line, they’re getting their chance to make Thor look really divine: the Play Arts Kai Thor figure is now available for order!

When Bandai Japan first debuted their lineup of SH Figuarts Avengers Age of Ultron figures, there was an imposing shadow in the background that may have generated more discussion and hype than all of the figures Bandai actually showed combined. Most recent Marvel movies have had a clear breakout character, be it Hulk, Loki or the Winter Soldier. Avengers: Age of Ultron is a little bit weird, though, in that its breakout star isn’t a new character at all–it’s an armor! Having generated more hype and merch than just about any other character, it’s a surprise that the kid-focused Marvel Mashers line hasn’t gotten its own Hulkbuster before now. Of all the new companies that began producing Marvel collectibles in 2015, the one that made the single most divisive line is likely ThreeA Toys. Way back in October 2014, LEGO shocked the Marvel collecting world with a totally random, out-of-left-field release of an Amazing Spider-Man 2 Electro minifigure polybag at the LEGO KidsFest event. Marvel collectors have been waiting with bated breath for details on when they could acquire the ASM2 Electro figure ever since. Over my years of attending cons, I’ve passed people wearing shirts with the slogan “Anime: Crack is Cheaper” dozens of times. Well, I think that motto could be modified a bit into a very appropriate “Collecting Vinyl Figures: Crack is Cheaper”.
