I have a big problem with Marvel vinyl figures. And the problem is that I can’t stop buying them. It used to be that relatively few vinyl Marvel figures got released each year–but with Funko’s explosion in popularity, the number of Marvel vinyls being released is at an all-time high. At some point I’m going to have to draw the line somewhat (for space purposes if not monetary ones)–but it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to kick the addiction anytime soon! The Marvel Dorbz Series 1 figures are now up for order, and spoilers–they are a-DORBZ-able!
Now then–leading up to the New York Toy Fair 2015, Funko started showing teasers for their new “Vinyl Sugar” brand imprint. And at the event, Funko decided to go big by unveiling their first twenty-three Vinyl Sugar Dorbz Marvel figures.
I’m still in love with the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, so the Guardians of the Galaxy Dorbz topped my list of cutest Funko items at the NY Toy Fair–but that doesn’t mean that the classic Marvel Dorbz are any slouch either!
While Funko has basically saturated the market with Funko POP Vinyls figures–which you can buy anywhere from Walgreens to Toys R Us to Walmart to Barnes and Noble, all of the product lines in the Vinyl Sugar imprint–including the Dorbz–are intended to be more limited and only sold at specialty store locations.
I’m definitely in favor of making the 3″ Dorbz figures feel more special by making them limited and harder to obtain–I think Funko made the absolute right call with their distribution selection on the Dorbz (and upcoming Vinyl Sugar Super Deluxe figures).
The Funko Dorbz Marvel Classic Series 1 lineup will include a full dozen figures, including:
- Dorbz Thor
- Dorbz Deadpool
- Dorbz Captain America
- Dorbz Iron Man
- Dorbz Beast
- Dorbz Wolverine
- Dorbz Mystique
- Dorbz Magneto
- Dorbz Ghost Rider
- Dorbz Spider-Man
- Dorbz Hulk
- Dorbz Scarlet Witch
I think this is a really strong lineup for a first series, as it contains four characters from the X-Men universe, five of the most classic Avengers team members and three assorted perennial headliner Marvel characters (Deadpool, Ghost Rider and Spider-Man). I feel like there’s really something for everyone in this series, as far as characters go!
And I think that collectors everywhere are going to appreciate Funko’s choice to package each figure in double-window box with a window on both the front and back of the box, so you can appreciate who whole vinyl figure without even removing it from the package (if you so choose).
I would also be absolutely astonished if we don’t see at least one or two Dorbz variants as San Diego Comic-Con 2015 exclusives. Black Costume Spider-Man or Red Hulk variant figures, anyone…?
All twelve of the classic Marvel Dorbz vinyl figures are now available for pre-order, with the first series shipping out in late July 2015 (just two months away!). Value-priced at just $8.99 each, I went ahead and ordered the full dozen figures for just over 100 bucks. I’m not sure exactly how limited or hard-to-find these figures are going to be, but I love them and I’m not taking any chances. Your aesthetic sensibilities may vary.
What do you think of the Vinyl Sugar Dorbz Marvel Series One figures, Marvel collectors? Are you “all-in” for this heartwarming new line, planning to pick up a few of your favorites, or avoiding these little cuties like the too-cute plague?
