Toy Fair: Vinyl Sugar Super Deluxe Deadpool Groot Rocket!

All good things must come to an end, and I’ll be wrapping up the Marvel toys portion of my New York Toy Fair 2015 coverage over the next day or two. But before the end comes, there’s a few more things I want to talk about from the show. Earlier this week I posted my impressions of the nearly two-dozen Vinyl Sugar Dorbz Marvel figures, but Funko brought along a far smaller assortment of a larger and way more expensive line from the new brand as well: the Vinyl Sugar Super Deluxe Deadpool, Groot and Rocket Raccoon figures!

Funko did some major teasing of their Vinyl Sugar Dorbz figures prior to the 2015 Toy Fair International, but there was zero mention of the other branch of Vinyl Sugar that would include Marvel characters (and only Marvel characters, at this time): the Super Deluxe Vinyl Sugar figures.

Rather than me trying to explain what this alternative line of Funko vinyls is, I’ll let the description from the Vinyl Sugar catalog do it for me: “For the most conspicuous collector, a rare treat–Run your mind’s eye and hands along the supple signature lines of the larger-than-life Super Deluxe collection. They are quite simply, art personified”.

Vinyl Sugar Catalog Super Deluxe Groot Figure…Wow, that’s some lofty text. If that doesn’t clearly explain to you what the Vinyl Sugar Super Deluxe figures are (and it sure doesn’t to me), let’s take a look at the actual vinyls.

First up, we’ve got Marvel’s resident cash-raccoon, the Super Deluxe Rocket Raccoon! Rocket is the smallest of the Vinyl Sugar Super Deluxe vinyls, with a height of just 7″ tall. While he’s just an inch taller than a Marvel Legends figure, this stylized Rocket Raccoon figure is far wider and uses a lot more plastic than a Hasbro figure.

He’s a bit bigger and bit cuter than the Funko POP Dancing Groot figure, and he also won’t have a bobble-head (like so many collectors loathe). Of the three Super Deluxe figures shown at the 2015 Toy Fair, Rocket & Dancing Groot is definitely my must buy.

But of course, Marvel also has its own money tree in Groot, and thus Vinyl Sugar is also making a full-grown Super Deluxe Groot figure! At 11″ tall, Groot is the largest of the initial wave of Super Deluxe Vinyl Sugar figures. Even so, his angry face doesn’t really appeal to me much, so if I’m going to skip one of the figures in this line, it’ll be the adult Groot.

The Super Deluxe Deadpool figure is 9″ tall, putting him right in the middle size-wise between Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Deadpool’s cartoonish nature has always lended itself well to super-deformed figures, and the style and proportions of the Vinyl Sugar Deadpool Super Deluxe look awesome.

Of course, all of this limited, over-sized vinyl figure goodness comes at a cost, and it’s a high one: the Vinyl Sugar Super Deluxe Marvel figures will retail for $79.99 each. That’s not a shocking price to me, as I’ve been paying the same price for the Marvel Funko Hikari vinyls, but I know 80 bucks for a non-poseable vinyl is a bit of a shocker for many collectors.

Vinyl figures of this size and quality tend to sell for around this price–if not higher–so I really believe that Funko is pricing these Super Deluxe vinyl collectibles fairly. Even so, I know this price is going to be a deal breaker for many people who’ve gotten into collectible vinyls through the low-priced lines like Mystery Minis and Funko POP Vinyls.

2015 New York Toy Fair Funko Vinyl Sugar Super Deluxe Groot Rocket RaccoonThe Funko Vinyl Sugar Super Deluxe Groot, Rocket Raccoon and Deadpool figures should be up for order this spring, with a release date in the second half of 2015. I’ll post updates both here and on the Marvel Toy News Facebook Page, so keep watching if there are up your alley (they’re certainly up mine).

Are you interested in this line of Super Deluxe Vinyl Sugar Marvel figures, collectors? Or does the cost-prohibitive price-tag on these large vinyls take them right off of your 2015 radar?

  1. Great review and coverage of Marvel toy goodness as usual 🙂 You mention “limited.” Did they announce edition sizes for these? Are they going to be numbered like the Hikaris? Thanks a lot.

    • These won’t be numbered according to Funko, but will only be sold at a limited number of retailers and produced in far smaller quantities than the Dorbz. So I guess we won’t see the Super Deluxes blown out at Walgreens and 7-11. LOL. =D

  2. Im thinking these larger scale vinyls are so much better than the Funko Pop line. Im not really into Groot or Rocket but for some reason i need both!
Ill pass on that mouthy merc, hes cool and all , just feel like hes getting played out before his big Hollywood debut… hope Funko releases some villains and a few ” B” list heroes soon!!! Im so tired of the go to characters that every child knows…
