Though Hasbro only allowed retailers to begin taking pre-orders for Marvel Universe Wave 23 (2013 Series 4) less than two months ago, the latest (and second last) wave of Hasbro Marvel Universe figures has begun hitting stores in the United States!
This series includes six all-new figures for the Marvel Universe line, but thanks to Hasbro’s not-so-genius packing strategies, two of them are variant figures that are going to make you want to pull your hair out…

Hasbro has now allowed online retailers like BigBadToyStore to begin taking pre-orders for Marvel Universe Wave 24 (AKA Marvel Universe 2013 Series 5). Based on what was said by Hasbro at the Hasbro Marvel panel at San Diego Comic Con 2013, this is the set that’s expected to be the final wave ever of 4″ Marvel Universe figures. With that in mind, you might be hoping that the case assortment containing Marvel Universe Wave 24 would be, well… good. It’s not. At all…

When Hasbro announced the return of Marvel Legends figures, there was perhaps no character I heard more requests (and begging) for than a 90’s style Jim Lee Jean Grey figure.
Well, it’s taken until Wave 5, but the Marvel Legends Jean Grey Jim Lee variant has arrived! Unfortunately, even if expectations hadn’t been so sky-high for this figure, I still think that poor Jean would be considered a disappointment…

We’ve been wondering for months how to get our hands on the Age of Ultron Marvel Legends Gold Ultron action figure that leaked out in the summer, and now we don’t have to wonder anymore. The 6″ Marvel Legends Ultron (Gold) figure is “free” with purchase of the new Marvel Unlimited Plus digital comics subscription! But be prepared for sticker shock–this subscription is rather pricey…

A couple months ago Hasbro revealed the first series of their new 4″ Avengers Assemble figure line, which left out certain other high-profile members of the team. Fans had panicked flashbacks to past superhero lines that were cancelled without the teams being completed. Luckily, that’s not going to be the case with this cartoon-based Avengers Assemble action figure line. Avengers Assemble Series 2 will contain all the team members necessary to complete the team, and has one of the best case ratios I’ve ever seen!

After a brief recession to enjoy this bounty of new Marvel Legends 2013 figures that Hasbro has bequeathed upon us, I’m fully recharged and ready to review the second half of Marvel Legends Wave 5! This time, it’s the penultimate member of the Wrecking Crew–its leader and most famous member–Marvel Legends The Wrecker!

If you’ve looked at the header for Marvel Toy News (or the Facebook cover, or the Twitter icon or the Facebook avatar), then you might have some suspicions that I have a ‘thing’ for the Scarlet Spider. And you would be absolutely right. I am a huge fan of the current Marvel Comics ongoing “Scarlet Spider” book by Christoper Yost, and as such this was my most-anticipated Marvel Legends figure of 2013 (after the raccoon). Though this Marvel Legends Scarlet Spider figure ends up feeling like a rehash (because it is), I like it all the same anyway….

I would love to start off this review recounting my decades of love for the Marvel comic books featuring the Black Panther, but, well… I’ve always been pretty ambivalent toward T’Challa. I’ve read all of his first appearances in the classic stories, but he’s just never struck a chord with me. That said, for the second time he’s been released in a series of Marvel Legends figures with a Build-A-Figure that I want, which means I just purchased my second Marvel Legends Black Panther figure–from the 2013 Marvel Legends Wave 5 Rocket Raccoon Series…

To my deep appreciation, Hasbro has released the summer 2013 Marvel Legends Wave 5 set on time, and now the reviews can begin. Ordinarily I’d start with the individuals and work my way up to the Build-A-Figure, but lets skip to the chase this time and talk about what I really care about in this set: the anthropomorphic raccoon! It’s the Marvel Legends Rocket Raccoon Build-A-Figure–and it… is… awesome!

Breathe out a sigh of relief and sing to the heavens, Marvel Legends collectors! This week, Marvel Legends 2013 Series 2 (wave 5 overall) was officially released in the United States! Cases of the series have hit the shores, revealing the exact contents of the cases (variants and all), and I can even do a little dance of joy myself, as I got the notice that my pre-ordered Marvel Legends Wave 5 case from BigBadToyStore shipped out this afternoon! In just a few short days, collectors everywhere will be smiling like crazy while they build their very own Marvel Legends Rocket Raccoon figures…

Though the “Iron Man 3” movie wasn’t quite the most well-loved Marvel Studios movie to date (except to me–I loved it more than any other Marvel movie, bar “Avengers), Hasbro is moving forward with a third series of Iron Man Marvel Legends in Fall 2013 regardless. This is going to be a rather controversial wave, however, as it contains an armor not seen in “Iron Man 3”, a villain (of a sort) who’s the subject of more hatred toward Marvel Studios than any other character ever from the movies, and a character who’s not (exactly) in the movies at all…
UPDATE: Hasbro has confirmed via photos that the Pepper Potts Rescue figure can wear her helmet. Photo added to the article–she looks great!

Although San Diego Comic Con 2013 Preview Night won’t begin for a few hours yet, news is already starting to emerge from the convention halls! If you’re like me, you were probably expecting that Hasbro would hang onto the secret of their next series of Marvel Legends until their panel later in the show, but nope! Front and center, on display behind glass for Preview Night of SDCC 2013, it’s this fall’s upcoming 2013 Marvel Legends Series 3 (Wave 6) series, featuring Agent Venom, Jubilee and more!
UPDATE: Jubilee has now been confirmed as the Build-A-Figure of Marvel Legends Wave 6!

Though I’m still hot on the trail of the freshly released Hasbro Marvel Universe Wave 22 set with Mysterio and Rhino, Hasbro has now let out the details regarding the next set after that! It’s filled with fan-favorite secondary characters like Cloak & Dagger, Baron Zemo and the Abomination–and it’s scheduled for release in just one month! Coming in August 2013, it’s Marvel Universe Wave 23!

When Marvel relaunched the cosmic side of their universe with “Annihilation”, the only book that could be considered a hit was “Nova”. And when I say “Nova” was a “hit”, I mean it took three years for it to be cancelled–these days that’s practically an eternity for a secondary character like Nova to have a solo series! So Richard Rider Nova was killed off. But with the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie coming next year, Hasbro is excited about Marvel cosmic once again. Thus the icon of that wing of Marvel has arrived in figure form: it’s the Wave 21 Marvel Universe Nova action figure!

2013 has been a tough year for collectors of the Hasbro Marvel Universe action figures line. Last year’s assortments with figures like Jubilee and Blastaar bled into this year and saturated stores, while some figures like 2012 Marvel Universe Nova have been near-impossible to find in stores. And all the while, the first Marvel Universe 2013 single-packed figures haven’t yet arrived. But what did arrive was the first assortment of 2013 Marvel Universe Team Packs including the Inhumans, West Coast Avengers and X-Men. And take heart if you haven’t bought them yet–they’re now on clearance!
