Of all the statues that made their grand debuts at San Diego Comic Con 2017, the one that caught me most by surprise–in a very good way–was Iron Studios’ newest addition to their Marvel Comics Battle Diorama series. Wolverine is dead, to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. Whether killed via being suffocated in liquid adamantium or impaled on a tree by a clone of his own younger self, Wolverine is dead. Even so, Logan remains among the most popular characters in the Marvel pantheon, with plenty of new collectibles coming our way in the coming months. As we approach Thanos’s arrival next year as the supreme boss villain of the current Marvel Cinematic Universe in “Avengers: Infinity War”, pretty much every major high-end Marvel collectibles company has their own recent Thanos statue on the market. Last month, Iron Studios got my attention when they showed off their really neat comic-based Spider-Man and friends on bridge Battle Diorama Series statues. This month, Iron Studios apparently wants more than just my attention–they want my money. And the easiest way to get it out of me is the same as always–with the Guardians of the Galaxy! One of the biggest surprises for me at Star Wars Celebration Orlando this April was that Gentle Giant Ltd. actually brought a handful of never-before-seen Marvel statue prototypes to show off at their booth at the event, including Punisher and Star-Lord statues and a new Skottie Young Thor Marvel Babies statue. I definitely surprised a lot of folks–including myself–when I awarded my “Best of New York Toy Fair 2017” award to Diamond Select Toys. While I’ve always loved DST’s Marvel Select and Minimates figures, what really locked the award for them was neither of those long-running lines, though–it was their unexpectedly amazing showing of Marvel statues! And three statues that mystified me perhaps more than anything else at the 2017 Toy Fair were Diamond’s resin Marvel Milestones Doctor Strange and Civil War movie statues…
