Ordinarily, we get to see several Marvel Select figures debut at a year’s New York Toy Fair. But with the embargo on talking about Avengers Infinity War toys still in effect, we got a singular new Marvel Select reveal at the 2018 Toy Fair. Magneto is hands-down one of the most popular and legendary Marvel villains ever, and has had an appropriately large number of statues released to match his reputation. The thing is, most of those large statues are long sold-out and astronomically-priced on the aftermarket, and not everyone can afford a $700 Sideshow Magneto. With the “obvious” selections of ONE:12 Collective Homemade Suit Spider-Man and movie Black Panther being revealed in the buildup to New York Toy Fair 2018, I really wasn’t sure what I’d be seeing added to the Marvel ONE:12 Collective series walking into the Mezco Toyz booth at the show. If you were a kid in 90s (like me!), then you’ve got a special place in your heart for the 1990s X-Men cartoon series (it’s not even a question). The costumes seen in that series have gone on to be considered the “iconic” costumes for the characters, and few superhero animated series have managed to meet the high standard of the original X-Men cartoon. Sideshow Collectibles debuted two major 1/4 Marvel statues at San Diego Comic Con 2017 last July. We’ve got just over a month until New York Toy Fair 2018, but already, it looks like perhaps the (literal) biggest Marvel Legends surprise for the show has been spoiled by a most unlikely source: Toys R Us! Sideshow Collectibles has shifted its focus a bit this year, with less Marvel Premium Format Figures being released and more emphasis on their new 1:5 scale statues from the Avengers Assemble and Spider-Verse statue lines. When Sideshow Collectibles first put their 1/4 Dark Phoenix Statue up for order way back in January 2016, most sharp collectors wondered when the other shoe would drop and a green Phoenix variant would appear. After close to two years of waiting, though, it appeared that that hope for fans of that costume might be lost.
