Though we’re almost a year away from the debut of the movie, the first company has announced acquiring the figure license for the upcoming 2014 Amazing Spider-Man 2 film. No, it’s not Hasbro announcing a line of figures to coincide with the movie (although I’m certain that there will be one)–it’s Hot Toys! Coming in 2014, we’ll begin getting Hot Toys Amazing Spider-Man 2 Movie Masterpiece Series figures!
Hot Toys was very conservative with their selection of Amazing Spider-Man 1/6 figures–in fact, they only created a single figure for the movie: Spider-Man himself. And even that figure–the MMS 179 Amazing Spider-Man–has been delayed over and over again. Though the movie has been out of theaters for well over a year, the original Amazing Spider-Man Hot Toys figure is still up for pre-order with expected arrival of September 2013.
I think that Hot Toys is going to be a lot more pleased with the characters they can offer from next year’s “Amazing Spider-Man 2” film, however. Many collectors are going to be psyched to buy a new figure of Spider-Man himself, as the costume in the new movie will be much more faithful to the comic book design (and yes, the gold eyes are being replaced with white ones). Andrew Garfield is becoming an iconic Peter Parker actor, and I think that a civilian Peter Parker figure could also be a safe sales bet for Hot Toys to make for the movie.
But the most exciting prospect from the Amazing Spider-Man 2 Hot Toys line is that we’re finally going to be able to get a Spider-Man villain (besides *ugh* New Goblin) in Hot Toys form! The redesigned Electro for the new movie looks killer, and also should be a fairly simple design for Hot Toys to capture in sixth scale form. I would be absolutely shocked (no pun intended) if Hot Toys Electro didn’t rear his ugly blue head next year, and I’m definitely looking forward to buying it.
We’re probably several months off from any official announcements as to the figures in the Hot Toys Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie figures lineup, but I’ll post an update once Hot Toys does begin to announce the figures (bet money on Spider-Man and Electro, though).
