In 2012, Diamond Select Toys gave fans the opportunity to vote for the entire lineup of Marvel Minimates wave 50. A year later, the five figures that were selected by over 30,000 fans to be included in the series have finally hit stores! I had a bout of hubris today, as I thought I’d just stroll into my local comic book store the day after Marvel Minimates Wave 50 was released and snatch up a complete set of the Marvel Minimates Fan’s Choice Series. As you may have guessed by the way I framed that sentence, things didn’t go exactly as planned…
- Cyborg Spider-Man & Songbird
- Ghost Rider & Onslaught
- Baron Zemo II & Nova Corps Centurion
- Baron Zemo I & Nova Corps Centurion (Shortpacked Variant)
For some reason, I had it in my head that casual Marvel fans didn’t care about either Baron Zemo, and so it would be a simple matter to just swoop in and grab a complete set of the Marvel Minimates Fan’s Choice Wave 50 figures once they were released. It didn’t work out that way.
In fact, Marvel Minimates Wave 50 was far more popular than I expected it to be at my local comic book shop. Whereas the complete Iron Man 3 Minimates series and The Wolverine Minimates wave (including the variants) are still sitting on the shelves unloved at my nearest comic shop, Marvel Minimates Series 50 was virtually wiped out when I visited the store. There was one set of Marvel Minimates Songbird/Cyborg Spider-Man left, one Ghost Rider & Onslaught Minimates two-pack, and zero Baron Zemo/Nova Corps Centurions of any kind.
In retrospect, I should have seen it coming that folks would army-build the Minimates Nova Corps Centurion figure armybuilder packs, but, well… hindsight is 20/20. I really liked the look of the Songbird and Ghost Rider Minimates, so I’m content to just order a complete set of Wave 50 Minimates online now (and while it’s literally taken years to do so, the Thunderbolts are finally complete! Now I just need to dig out the rest of the team to display with Songbird!).
If you don’t have a local comic book shop or they’ve already sold out, all four Marvel Minimates Wave 50 two-packs are available for $11.99 with free shipping online as of writing (which is probably how I should have just bought them in the first place, but I wanted to see them in person before ordering–oy).
