When the Avengers Age of Ultron movie hit theaters, Hasbro had a bit of a missed opportunity with the Marvel Legends Ultron Build-A-Figure not hitting stores until months after the movie. Hasbro won’t be making the same mistake again, however, as the main Infinity War antagonist is available right out of the gate! You have to buy 6 of the 7 Marvel Legends Infinity War Wave 1 figures to build Thanos—is he worth the investment?
The Right:
See, because of restrictions put on toy companies by licensing, collectibles companies weren’t allowed to even reveal their Avengers Infinity War toys until last week. As a result, the first glimpse we got of this ML Thanos Series wasn’t exactly the flattering assortment of hi-res photos we’re accustomed to.
But once I had Thanos in-hand and put together for myself (props to Hasbro for not forcing collectors to buy Infinity War Iron Man to get a Build-A-Figure piece), I was satisfied to see that he’s a solid (albeit certainly not perfect) movie figure.
The sculpting on Thanos’ costume is much better than I had anticipated. The detailed texture on his upper body and the armor on his belt and knees look really cool, and the folds and creases of his pants look surprisingly realistic.
I was unsure of how I liked the sleeveless look of this iteration of Thanos, but on the toy it really makes the big guy look like a beefy, formidable threat. I don’t know if Thanos will be punching out Hulk or anything in the movie, but he looks like he could at least put up a good fight.
The Infinity Gauntlet itself is nicely sculpted and looks quite good in person (although not necessarily in huge, hi-res photos). The individual stones might look a bit sloppily-painted in photos, but to the naked eye they look perfectly fine to me.
While the movie Thanos Marvel Legends figure isn’t sculpted to Spider-Man levels or anything (alas, there’s no double-hinge elbows—much less butterfly swivels), I had no problems getting him into some fun fighting/boxing stances.
For a character who’s a powerhouse and not an acrobat, I think collectors will be content with the articulation scheme.
The Wrong:
In case you couldn’t tell, I straight-up hate the almost charming smile that Hasbro has sculpted on the Build-A-Figure Thanos head. Yes, I gather he’s meant to look self-satisfied and smug (or something), but to me the facial expression on this figure looks downright absurd and wildly misses the mark.
It’s not that I think the sculpting on the head is bad, per se—the detailing actually looks very accurate—it’s just that I think the expression makes Thanos look really, really silly. The feel of the head is important to me, and the awkward feel of this one is the main reason I already pre-ordered the Bandai SH Figuarts Thanos figure as a replacement.
The other thing I think some collectors will be unhappy with is the size of the BAF overall. The scale on Thanos isn’t BAD, but I really wish he had been just a tad larger. While he still towers over the Iron Spider figure, the poor Mad Titan feels a bit undersized standing with Proxima Midnight.
Overall: My jaw dropped in horror when I saw the first low-quality photographs of this Marvel Legends Avengers Infinity War Thanos figure, but it turns out that it’s actually a mostly nice figure. I think he could certainly be a mite larger—and I hate the goofy facial expression on him with a passion—but this is otherwise a very solid entry in the Marvel Legends MCU lineup.
This figure is selling for nearly as much as the Thanos Figuarts figure on the aftermarket right now—which I personally think is a bit too high for this figure. But if you’re buying this Infinity War Legends wave anyway, I think you’ll be more than happy with this Thanos BAF as a free bonus.
I agree that The figuarts Thanos has way more options over the BaF, my problem with the figuarts is that it’s going to be even smaller than the BaF… Next to a Marvel Legends Hulk would probably be fine, but next to that Proxima… hell no, lol. I don’t know, though, the paint/fun factor on the figuarts is way better, maybe good enough to ignore his size.
I wasn’t able to preorder one, so I’ll probably have to get the BaF in the end :/
Nice review, friend 😀
The head’s also kinda tiny. If it was a bit bigger, he’d also be a bit taller. But yeah, I’m not a fan of the smirk. I just think powered-up Thanos needs to look more evil or mischievous.
It’s Joss Whedon, not Josh Whedon.
Thanks! Haha, I know it’s “Joss”, but sadly, the Auto-Correct on my iPhone doesn’t like that name. 😉
Joss Whedon directed The Avengers and Age of Ultron. Josh Brolin is the actor who voices and provides motion capture for Thanos.
You don’t know what you’re talking about.
Surely you’ve heard the jokes that went viral about Thanos looking like purple Joss Whedon?
Your comments makes me picture you as the angry collector nerd in the Captain America hat on Shartimus Prime’s videos. “You don’t know what you’re talking about Thartimus!”
Is it a completely new sculpt or is there some part of it that seems carried over from the last Thanos BAF?
not that I can see, but i think its all new sculpt
It’s a completely new build. The previous Thanos BAF was comic-based.
Geezus Coorist! Nobody has even seen the movie and you’re already criticizing the size of the BAF?! Obviously Proxima Midnight is a large character in her own right, so maybe she actually scales up to Thanos accurately (bad word, I know). What’s also obvious is that you’re a charter member of the “bigger is better” posse, scale be damned. Can we at least wait until the movie is viewed before we pass judgement on whether Thanos is tall enough or not? Sheesh!
Your unwanted advise has been duly noted. But I think I’ll make my judgments now. Thanks anyway.
And your unwanted retort was been equally duly noted. Don’t get all butt hurt just because I spoke the truth. Not to mention, I didn’t know Dabid posted as YODO. Here’s some more unwanted advice”, Allow him to speak for himself. Lemme guess, you feel the same as he does despite the fact you don’t know at all how large Proxima Midnight is compared to Thanos. You just want him bigger anyway. And you get no thanks.
The problem with the Figuarts figure is that he’s gonna be about an inch SHORTER….
I think we’re gonna have to hope for a Marvel Select version.
Also, I don’t feel like the BAF OR the Figuarts version have the right color of gold.
They both look really weird.
The BAF clocks in around 8”, and the SHFiguarts is 7.48”. So it’s only a half inch difference. As for the gauntlet, I prefer the gold of the Figuarts, and the fact that the gems are translucent, and this stand out more. On top of that he has 3 head sculpts, so you get a good range of options, and all of the, are distinctively Josh Brolin.
Believe me, I learned the hard way about the size difference when I got the Figuarts Doctor Strange for my Marvel Legends shelf. No matter what I do I can’t disguise the scale issue, and will thus be displaying him elsewhere. That being said, I think Thanos will still look good with the Legends. He may be smaller than I would like but at 7 1/2” he will still tower over the bulk of the ML figures.
i feel like in the next wave, someone will come with a second thanos angry face, fingers crossed
the face is very weird
Looks like a purple Rick Harrison. “$50 is the best I can do for those Infinity Gems”
Your posing needs alot work, just sayin! dont hate me!
I’m not an expert poser and I don’t pretend to be (in other words, I’m not a poser poser, haha). I keep it simple and leave crazy poses to the experts at that sort of thing—particularly on bulky figures like this Thanos. 😉
The color on my gauntlet piece does not even close to yours. Mine is more of a dark brass color. Also, did you do any touch up work on the gems because they look vibrant?
I never, ever do any touch-ups or refinements to any figures before I review them. If they come with broken pieces or paint misapplied, I review them just like that.
It’s possible the natural lighting on my figure is just making the paints look differently colored to yours?
With that said, does the color of your gauntlet match the color of the pics posted here?
Yup. I haven’t used any filters or anything, if that’s what you’re asking. That’s exactly how it looks.
It must be the lighting. Your pic of the gauntlet in the King Cobra review looks much closer in color to what I’ve got. The gems on yours are painted nicely while mine not so much, in particular the large yellow gem.
I genuinely want to like this Thanos and I feel he has potential.
