Considering that I like the Funko Marvel Hikari vinyls more than just about any other Marvel toys on the market this year, you would think I’d be overjoyed about the first officially-announced SDCC 2015 Marvel Funko Hikari. But due to a combination of expense fatigue and a shockingly high edition size, I’m just not all that psyched about the SDCC Exclusive Funko Cosmic Powers Deadpool Hikari figure…
But hey–I love Hikari and I love Deadpool, so what’s not to love with a San Diego Comic Con 2015 exclusive Deadpool Funko Hikari, right…? The “Cosmic Powers Deadpool” Hikari that Funko announced on Friday has a classy metallic sheen to it, and is a lovely gradient mixture of red, black and orange. It’s really quite gorgeous, and I definitely could see Funko selling 500-1,000 of these at Comic-Con with little problem.
The trouble is, immediately after having that thought, I saw how many of this “limited” vinyl Funko was making for the event: the edition size on the Deadpool Cosmic Powers Hikari is a jaw-dropping… 1,750. Uh, what?!
To put this into perspective, the previous most-produced Deadpool Hikari was the regular mass market release red version of Deadpool, which 1,500 pieces were produced of. There aren’t near 1,500 Hikari collectors out there at all, and as a result, you can find that plain Funko Hikari Deadpool now for around $50–about $30 off the retail price.
Ordinarily I pre-buy my Hikari exclusives from fellow collectors attending conventions or buy them online immediately after the show for a good value, but this is definitely a case where I’m going to wait a month and get a Deadpool Cosmic Powers for likely a fraction of its retail price. If the popular X-Force Deadpool Hikari can be limited to 1,000 and still sell for $25-$30 below MSRP, there’s little hope for this SDCC Cosmic Powers Deadpool’s value to do anything other than drop like a rock.
While I don’t mind getting a beautiful piece like this for a discount, I think it’s unquestionably a bad strategy on Funko’s part to try to bring in new Hikari collectors with a “limited” con Hikari that’s going to end up being “worth” far less than attendees paid for it. Tactics like this tend to devalue and besmirch the name of a collector’s line in the end, in my experience.
What do you think of the Funko Hikari Cosmic Powers Deadpool SDCC 2015 Exclusive, Marvel collectors? Will you be picking one of these pretty vinyls up at the show, waiting to buy one for a deal on the aftermarket, or skipping out on this piece altogether?
