I’m finishing up my coverage of New York Toy Fair 2019 this week, and I’ve saved the best for last from Hasbro: the “80 Years of Marvel” Legends series! Composed of 17 total figures, I’ll split my previews between the comic and movie figures and focus first on the 10 Marvel Legends 80th Anniversary movie Figures—including Peggy Carter, Korg, Grandmaster, Iron Spider with Mecha-Legs and more!
And yet…! The rumors were true, and some movie figures many of us never could have imagined are coming our way this year…
First, let’s look at that Ant-Man and the Wasp two-pack. This is actually a really interesting set, as it contains two characters that have never gotten a mass-release as toys before.
The MCU version of Ghost is a sharp departure from the comic book character, but I actually thought the character was pretty fun and had a neat character design. I really like the idea of getting a Marvel Legends Ghost for my Ant-Man and Wasp figures to face off against, and I’m looking forward to seeing her alternate unmasked head.
Luis is just a crazy choice for a figure and perhaps ties Rock Python as the single most unexpected selection for this year’s Hasbro 6” lineup.
He was an easy figure to make using existing tooling and a new head, which is likely the only reason we’re getting a fan-favorite Michael Peña figure at all. That miniaturized Pym laboratory with handle and wheels is full of win. Love that we’re getting such a smile-inducing accessory with a comedic character.
Also from last summer’s theatrical flicks, we’ve got an Avengers Infinity War two-pack that upgrades two figures many fans weren’t satisfied with in last year’s basic assortments. The Marvel Legends Iron Spider was a bit of a dud last year, as it lacked robot arms and included zero accessories—even hands that weren’t web-shooting permanently.
Getting a refreshed version of Iron Spider-Man is something collectors have been demanding since that original figure hit last spring, so I can see this being gobbled up by fans without a doubt.
Infinity War Iron Man wasn’t necessarily a bad figure last year, but it was lacking all of the cool weapons and transformations that made the Mark 50 armor so exciting in the movie.
Now with hand blisters and floating cannon effects pieces, I think there’s a lot more interesting possibilities for this armor in a movie figures display.
Delving way back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, next we’ve got a Captain America: The First Avenger two-pack set that will be an Amazon exclusive (no, it’s not up for pre-order yet—I’ll send out alerts via our social media as soon as it is).
The Captain America figure in this set looks outstanding, and has almost unquestionably the best Chris Evans likeness we’ve seen from Hasbro. This figure is specifically from the Prisoners of War rescue scene, and does a nice job of accurately portraying Cap’s costume from that scene.
The bigger news in this pack is beyond a doubt the first-ever mass release Peggy Carter figure–a character that I think many collectors had given up on every seeing a super-articulated action figure iteration of.
While not the Agent Carter I imagine most fans would prefer, I’ll take Peggy however I can get her. And that Hayley Atwell likeness on the head sculpt is so, so good.
The last four figures in the Hasbro 80 Years of Marvel Series are four figures from Thor Ragnarok split across a pair of two-packs. The first pack contains a refreshed movie Hela Legends figure, which comes paired with the first-ever Skurge the Executioner 6”.
Hela became incredibly difficult to find following the success of the movie and her previous movie figure had been selling for around $100, so there was obvious demand for a reissue of that figure. To get one with a more accurate portrait and a hammer-destroying effects hand is icing on the cake.
I liked Skurge in the movie and I think it’s fun to get him with Des and Troy (his assault rifles).
The likeness on Skurge the Executioner is great, and while I don’t know that collectors were screaming out for him, I don’t think they’ll turn up their noses at him either.
Finally, we’ve got another almost unbelievable set in Korg and the Grandmaster. I don’t think many were expecting this duo to become mega-favorites in Thor Ragnarok, but both were scene-stealers that fans wanted toys of.
It’s pretty surreal that we’re actually going to be getting a Marvel Legends Jeff Goldblum figure, but I welcome it with open arms and a smile on my face. It’s really too bad that the chances of ever getting a Topaz figure are basically non-existent!
I didn’t really think Korg was as funny as some people did in the movie, but fandom has spoken and he’s a hit. This figure has a unique look (not to mention a bunch of all-new unique tooling) and will round out the main cast from Thor Ragnarok wonderfully. Score one more for Hasbro in the exceeding expectations department.
The Marvel Legends 80th Anniversary Series should be up for order online sometime this spring/summer, and I’ll post an update here on the site and send out alerts via the MTN Twitter/Facebook/Instagram as soon as they go up for sale.
What do you think of the movie half of this year’s “bonus” line of Marvel Legends figures? Is this series worthy of all the hype and buzz that it’s generating? And with all these major characters being filled in in 2019, what MCH characters (besides Quicksilver) are you still hoping to see Hasbro backtrack and hit up in the future?
So will Kory come with Miek?
Unlike most comments I see, I’m a sucker for the movie figures.
We’re still missing the Collector, Howard the Duck, and Cosmo (surely there’s a three-pack possibility?).
Eventually we should get a Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne (another two-pack idea?). As well as at least one iteration of Howard Stark.
Happy Hogan and Whiplash are still left over from the IRON MAN films, along with Jane Foster and the Warriors Three from THOR.
We’re still missing an MCU Sharon Carter, and if they’re considering deeeeeep cuts, there’s always Colonel Phillips and the Howling Commandos from FIRST AVENGER.
If a DOCTOR STRANGE sequel is truly in the cards, then aren’t we due for the Ancient One or Kaecilius? And where the @#$% is Wong?!?
I wouldn’t turn down a Vulture reissue with a Michael Keaton head.
I’m still surprised we’ve never had any Agents of SHIELD figures (aside from Coulson), especially since AoS has outlasted the Netflix shows.
If the likenesses are well done, I’d honestly welcome any or all of these. If the likenesses are well done.
I’ve never agreed with a post more.
Very true, but I would point out that the Netflix shows probably would have gone much much longer if not for the Disney streaming service in the works.
Fair point. But when you consider that AoS started well before the Netflix shows, the idea that we’ve never seen even a Skye/Daisy/Quake figure is odd. Certainly no Legends with the AoS logo.
I mean, sure, an exclusive limted-edition team box set might be a lot to ask, but the lack of ANY acknowledgement kinda sticks out, especially at this point.
What I wouldn’t give to have a Daisy/May 2 pack!
I have at least one of most MCU characters, but man… I am still salty that Luis gets a figure before Avengers mainstay Quicksilver. Was something said about him at toy fair? He’s a notable absence, and it makes me curious about whether he’s gonna reappear in Endgame and that’s why we’re not seeing him.
It’s never been stated anywhere, but there’s been rumblings that he was a victim of that idiotic Fox embargo that a lot of Marvel’s divisions were under until recently. There was very, VERY little Quicksilver merchandise even when the movie was actually out, and I seem to recall someone asking Funko about him and the Funko reps explicitly saying they would not be making any Quicksilver stuff for the movie.
Methinks someone up top was mad about having to split his movie rights with Fox.
I mean, I figured that (it’s also likely why he died) but we’re getting comic Quicksilver in a three pack, the X-men/FF embargo has lifted pretty much everywhere else, and Disney basically owns the rights again. The fact that we’re not seeing ANYTHING about him at a time where that’s happening AND Hasbro is giving everyone and their mother a figure? Especially since that embargo was SPECIFICALLY related to X-men/FF properties and OH LOOK two waves of X-men AND a Dr Doom figure.
It just feels… odd, particularly with rumors of Aaron Taylor Johnson being sighted on set during filming, and the fact that we know time travel is involved in Endgame somehow.
So happy seeing a Korg figure- totally unexpected!!!
Ghost is a must have for me. The fact that she comes with Luis is just icing on the cake. Peggy and Grandmaster are awesome too, I’ll definitely get their packs if I see them.
As for MCU characters that I want figures of? If we’re sticking to just the films, then Wong is a must for me. Wong has always been my favorite Doctor Strange character, so if I can at least get a movie version of him, I’d be happy.
Executioner is the must figure for me! Iron Man if he has the metallic red as nice as the Select figure does.
Still hoping some day to see the following:
Comic version of Man Ape, Dragon Man, Mangog, Mr. Hyde, and Melvin Purvis Gladiator!m
I love having these MCU characters released outside of the regular waves of figures with BAF pieces. I like some, not others. I like the idea of picking and choosing without worrying about missing a BAF piece. The regular waves could be all comic based with BAF, and I’d be a happy boy.
Korg-Grandmaster is a must-buy for me. The rest are 2-packs where i want one figure much more than the other so i’ll probably wait and see which (if any) end up on sale at some point rather than shelling out $50 apiece. Really loving Luis & Agent Carter. Skurge looks great but he’s just not a character i really need a figure for (now make a comic Skurge, and i’m there!). especially since i’m pretty happy with ragnarok wave Hela.
Still hoping for mcu Heimdall. Also i would like it if Hasbro would make a Watcher figure as part of the 80th lanniv line, they can even make it mcu since they had some watcher-dudes in GotG 2 during the Stan Lee cameo.
My most wanted MCU figures (besides Quicksilver) would be:
Iron Monger
Abomination
Whiplash
Redo of many older Iron Man suits and House Party Protocol suits, particularly Mk 5 and Igor
Hammer and Killian
Ultron Final form (all new mold)
Ultron sentries
Infinity War- Accurate Cull Obsidian vs Hulkbuster 2-pack, Eitri, Outrider
Chitauri
Brand new Avengers Loki
Ultron , version 1….the beat up scarred,, “ain’t no strings on me” version. And Miek….need a Miek
Will Skurge come with “Des” and “Troy”? Did they say that? Because the display only show 1 gun with an axe. And Hasbro has played that game before with the Infinity War Captain America, he came with 1 shield when he clearly had 2 in the movie. Yes, I’m one of those suckers that ended up buying 2 Captain America to complete my figure with 2 shields and gave away the extra Cap to a kid at church. I hope they’re not going to do that with Skurge.
They actually said during the presentation that Executioner would come with “Des” and “Troy”, so they will presumably both be there.
COOL!! Good to know.
All these figures coming out but still no Heimdall?
Hasbro said at Toy Fair that they’d love to do Heimdall someday.
Dabid! OMGOMGOMG! WAIT! We have a confirmation that Ghist WILL have an unmasked head. Oh please please PLEASE SAY YES!!
They said during the Hasbro Presentation that there’s an alternate unmasked head for Ghost not displayed at Toy Fair, so I gotta believe there is. =D
THAAAANKKKK YOOUUUU 😍😍😍
Would’ve preferred Janet Van Dyne over Luis (as much as I like Michael Pena,) but the offerings here all look really good.
As for who I hope to see, I still hope we eventually get Heimdall at some point. He was in like 5 movies and still no Legends love.
Cap, Peggy: insta-buy.
