SDCC 2017 Gentle Giant Marvel Animated Daredevil & Squirrel Girl!

I’m sure that tomorrow we’ll be seeing a cornucopia of new Marvel Legends 2018 figures unveiled at the SDCC Hasbro Marvel panel, but in the meantime, other companies get their time in the limelight. And one of those companies is Gentle Giant, who just so happens to produce my absolute favorite Marvel collectibles line: the Skottie Young Marvel Babies statues! And GG brought the goods to SDCC 2017, where they’ve now revealed Marvel Animated Daredevil and Squirrel Girl statues!

Well, here’s a plot twist. If you had asked me to make a top 50 list of characters I thought that Gentle Giant Ltd. would adapt into Marvel Babies statues, I could honestly testify in court that Squirrel Girl would not have been on that list.

But Doreen Green has managed to carve out a fan base for herself that’s vastly beyond what I ever expected, and following up the Kotobukiya Bishoujo Squirrel Girl statue, now she’s even getting her own Gentle Giant statue!

Squirrel Girl #1 Skottie Young Variant CoverThe Marvel Animated Squirrel Girl statue is based off of the Skottie Young variant cover to The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1. This piece is by far the most niche/obscure character that GG has added to their line of Skottie Young statues, so I’m a little nervous about how well it’s going to fare, but I’m hoping for the best.

(On a side note, I do kind of wish Doreen came with a little squirrel sidekick to talk to! It only seems right!)

The other reveal from the show is one that I think I can say with certainty is going to sell just fine–the Marvel Animated Daredevil statue!

Based off the cover to the 2014 Daredevil #1 comic book, this resin piece depicts DD as if he’s precariously walking across a tightrope (I wonder if it’s more or less terrifying walking across a tightrope when you’re blind?). Full of charm and personality, I really dig this new Daredevil Animated statue. The “illustration lines” on the bottom of his boot, the lower case “d”s on his chest… this is downright sickeningly cute.

And if the sales of the Punisher released earlier this year are any indication, I have a hunch that fellow Netflix star Daredevil may be one of the hotter mini-statues Gentle Giant releases in this line.

Skottie Young Daredevil #1 Variant CoverGentle Giant Marvel Animated statues are available for order online, with both Daredevil and Squirrel Girl expected to be released this coming winter. Some of the earlier figures in this line are starting to sell out completely and become difficult to find non-inflated prices, so if you’re thinking of joining in on this collection, there’s no time like the present.

Are you pumped up for the two latest additions to the growing Gentle Giant Skottie Young Marvel Animated statues line, Marvel collectors? Do you think Squirrel Girl was a good pick for this series, and if not, who would you have opted for instead?
