Spider-Man Marvel Legends Kingpin Series Unboxing Photos & Impressions!

It took a wee bit longer than the other two early Marvel Legends 2019 series (Black Panther and Captain Marvel) to arrive, but the case of 2019 Spider-Man Legends Kingpin Series Figures I ordered online is here at last! I’ll go through and review each and every figure from the wave in-depth with lots of hi-res photos in the coming weeks, but to help tide readers over, here’s some initial impressions and unboxing photographs of the Marvel Legends Kingpin Build-A-Figure and more…

Marvel Legends Kingpin Series Figures Unboxing Photos

While I had ordered singles of the whole Kingpin series from Amazon at the start of the year, they ended up delaying my orders until March, so the case I had reserved from Entertainment Earth actually ended up being fulfilled first.

I’m not exactly wild about owning an extra Six-Armed Spider-Man figure from the case, but it sure beats waiting an extra month to get these figures—or paying the extortionate $120 the Kingpin BAF is selling for all by his lonesome on eBay right now!

Here’s some quick early thoughts on each of the eight figures in this wave…

Marvel Legends Six Armed Spider-Man Figure in Bubble PackagingAs expected, Six Arm Spider-Man is clearly the dud of this assortment. Hasbro has a great idea with this figure, and it’s certainly a variant of Spidey that I think deserved an update, but the execution here is really poor.

Six Armed Spider-Man Marvel Legends Action FigureThere’s absolutely zero paint wash on this figure, with virtually all his color details coming solely from straight up molded plastic. Paired with the disappointing lack of any kind of upper torso an crunch or waist swivel, and you’ve got one of the more underwhelming Hasbro Legends figures in years.

Marvel Legends 2019 Black Cat Figure and AccessoriesI’m a big Black Cat fan, so I’m always game for a new Black Cat action figure—even one in a now-defunct modern costume.

Black Cat Marvel Legends Kingpin Series Figure ReviewThat said, the portrait on this figure looks a bit too “happy-go-lucky school girl” for me, and it’s tough to get her to grasp her whip at all. I’m going to have to spend more time with this figure to really decide how I feel about it.

Silver Sable Marvel Legends Figure and AccessoriesMarvel Legends Silver Sable looks terrific in the package, but is another figure that I’ll need to warm up to out-of-the-package. The way her legs have been forced into the plastic seems to have warped them a bit, and I’m concerned about the quality of the plastic used on the legs.

Marvel Legends Silver Sable Kingpin Series Figure Loose Holster BeltsSilver Sable’s belt is semi-loose, and her holsters kept falling down her legs while I was trying to take just one photo of her for this post. The silver paint deco has some weird defects on her glutes, and her ankle articulation wasn’t working well for me to stand her up easily.

Go Down Swinging Symbiote Spider-Man Figure and AccessoriesThe “Go Down Swinging” Symbiote Spider-Man that pairs with Red Goblin hasn’t gotten much love prior to release, but I think it looks excellent in-hand. Hasbro (thank God) gave us alternate hands for this Symbiote Spidey so we can mix things up pose-wise.

Marvel Legends 2019 Symbiote Spider-Man Figure ModernI’m a bit concerned about some rubbery feel to the black plastic on this figure—and the eyes popping off the head will take some getting used to—but my preliminary thoughts on this figure are more positive than I expected. [My apologies for the photo quality on this–I’ll take better photos of the new Symbiote Spider-Man when I write the full review of him.]

Marvel Legends Night Thrasher Figure and AccessoriesAlthough he’s gotten a bit of a lukewarm amount of hype thus far, I genuinely think Marvel Legends Night Thrasher may be a big hit once people get a chance to see him in person.

Night Thrasher Marvel Legends 2019 Six Inch FigureThe shiny, smooth gloss black of Night Thrasher’s armor looks tremendous in person, and instantly propels him to one of my favorite figures in this series. I can already tell that posing him with that skateboard is going to be a blast.

Marvel Legends Red Goblin Figure and AccessoriesMarvel Legends Red Goblin—the Carnage/Green Goblin mashup—is another figure I have mixed feelings about. The yellow mouth and eyes on this design just look really weird to me, and I’m frustrated that there’s no Goblin Glider, making this figure feel incomplete.

Red Goblin Marvel Legends Spider-Man Kingpin Series FigureFor some reason, I really thought that Red Goblin had an articulated or removable tail, but that is not the case. You’d think I’d know better since I literally had this figure in my hands at New York Comic Con 2019 a few months ago, but apparently not!

Puma Marvel Legends Spider-Man Figure and Kingpin BAF TorsoPuma is about as far from a household name as you can get (no, the notoriety of Puma Shoes absolutely does not count), but Hasbro has put together a highly impressive figure here that may win over some on-the-fence collectors.

Marvel Legends Puma Kingpin Series Action FigureThe fierce head sculpt on the Marvel Legends Puma figure is sensational, and I love the sculpting on the various furry portions of the body and the feathers. That loose necklace flopping around endlessly is gonna drive me nuts, though.

Build-A-Figure Kingpin BAF Unassembled Hasbro 2019

Finally, we’ve got the main attraction of this wave for virtually everyone: the Kingpin Build-A-Figure! You’ll need to buy every figure in the series except Six Armed Spider-Man to get the pieces to complete Wilson Fisk. There’s not a lot of paint deco on this figure, but what is there has been masterfully painted. The joints are all tight and both heads look fantastic.

Kingpin’s cane has a slight rubbery plastic bend to it and his knee articulation makes his pants look a bit bizarre when the knees are bent, but otherwise I’m extremely pleased with the new ML Kingpin figure at a glance.

Marvel Legends Kingpin Build-A-Figure Complete ImpressionsThe Marvel Legends Spider-Man Kingpin Series is now starting to ship out via EE, which is where I got mine from. They’re fulfilling orders as they receive more cases from Hasbro, so it may take a few days for new orders to ship. BBTS and other online retailers should be receiving their orders around now as well, although Amazon pushed my pre-orders back to March and hasn’t said they’re moving them forward to this month (yet).

Now that I’ve got them in-hand and unboxed, I’ll begin photographing and writing up comprehensive reviews for each figure in this wave. What six inch action figures are you most interested in seeing discussed in-depth first, and which figures (if any) are you not hearing about at all, Marvel collectors?

  1. I had pre-ordered the whole set minus 6 armed Spidey on Amazon at the start of the year, with an end of January shipping date. Well, Amazon canceled Silver Sable and Red Goblin on me, and just deleted them out of my order with zero notice. This happened before to me with a Star Wars Black series figure as well. I’ve been burned twice now on Amazon with canceled pre-orders, so I will never pre-order figures from them again. Silver Sable was my most anticipated, as her comic in the early 90’s was one of the first series that I collected, since it was a #1 issue right when I started to collect comics. So, now I have to hope that I can find a Silver Sable for retail price later on Amazon or at an actual store, because I will not pay scalper prices. But I have received Thrasher, Puma, Black Spidey, and Black Cat, and they are all very well done. Of course I wish I could have completed my Kingpin, as well.

  2. I’m thinking Night Thrasher isn’t as cool as a fan of his comic appearances might think. Knowing nothing about the comics he was in, he looks very simple and kinda boring to me. The only figure besides Kingpin I was really interested in here is Puma. But then again, Puma seems like a very familiar character to me from reading Spider-man in the mid to late 80’s, while I hadn’t heard of Night Thrasher until this figure was announced. Maybe having him in hand will change my mind, but I doubt a large amount of detail will suddenly appear on him when I finally get him shipped from my Amazon pre-order that got postponed!

  3. Did anyone addressed the fact that the Kingpin is wearing a woman’s jacket? (button on the left side). Or is that a new fashion trend that I’m not aware of? (which is very possible).

    • i think it was commented on in one of Dabid’s previous posts. I find it hard to unsee, but not a deal-breaker. Most commenters seemed to feel like it was nitpicking to point it out but i do find it bizarre nobody caught that somewhere in the design process. Maybe they originally intended for the jacket to be buttoned shut? Or maybe none of the designers wear suits /sport coats/blazers?

      • See my comment above. You suggest a couple possible explanations on the error. I’d like point out that it’s not just suits/sport coats/blazers in which the buttons are on the right side for men. It applies to men’s shirts (and vests like in the Kingpin’s) as well, so that explanation is a bit weak. However, one possible explanation is that jacket piece might have been designed by a woman.

On the subject about the designers of these action figures, I think they should learn the basics about men’s and women’s fashion. For instance, the belt buckle on the “Ares” action figure is shown the way a woman would wear a belt where the post (the part that goes through the belt hole) is pointing to its left side. What’s even worst is the end of the belt strap is on the left side. That cannot be physically done as shown! If you are wearing a belt, you will notice that the post will point AWAY from the end of the belt strap.

With that said, I hope action figure designers start paying more attention to real life details. .

      • Don’t really know how the molding process works but I wouldn’t be shocked if it reversed what the original sculpt was. In other words, the original sculpt had it correct for a men’s jacket which got flipped when it went to mold. Could be totally wrong though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • I did a couple of times last year (July and December). In fact, I took the extra effort to contact Hasbro customer service back in July. I was provided an email address to direct my comment. I never got a response back from them acknowledging the error or any action to correct it.

I just finished relocating the buttons onto the correct side by CAREFULLY cutting off the buttons using an X-Acto blade. Luckily, the jacket is rubbery, instead of hard plastic, which made it much easier for me to cut off the buttons. If I look at the jacket closely, yes, I can see the “scar” from each button that I removed, but they hardly noticeable a few feet away. The relocated buttons really do stand out on its correct side. So am I glad that I did it? My answer is “YES”.

  4. Puma and Silver Sable are the figs from this wave i like best, but neither feels like a must-have character. Red Goblin and Night Thrasher look decent as well. Not much interest in the black cat or spidey figs. Kind of resigned to not building Kingpin at the moment but i’ll reconsider the matter in a few months.

Somehow i hadn’t yet made the connection that Puma, Silver Sable and Night Thrasher are all Tom DeFalco/Ron Frenz characters. I should have known better especially since i loved that ASM run (granted, i wasn’t reading Thor when Thrasher first appeared). Stupid me!

    • I feel similar. Puma looks the most impressive of the bunch, but he’s such an obscure character. Thrasher looks decent. No interest in the Red Gob, modern Cat and the Spideys. And Silver Sable… I want to like the figure because I remember liking the character in the comics, but this isn’t how I remember her looks. She needs the big 80’s hair and a thicker build!

I too am resigned to not building Kingpin at the moment. When this wave starts getting discounted later I will bite, but at this point I’m taking a pass.

  5. I’m gonna pass on building Mr Fisk also. For me there isn’t any figures in the wave that I want and to top it off I feel that the Kingpin Baf is just too large and out of scale with Marvel legends.

I appreciate he’s meant to be a big guy but scale wise he would be around 8 foot tall!!!

  6. Puma is the best. The night thrasher figure is ok but no pegs on the skateboard. Also, board is rather small too in you want to pose figure on it.
