If there’s one thing that we’ve learned to count on for each and every Marvel movie that gets released, it’s a corresponding series of Diamond Select Toys’ Marvel Minimates figures! Oftentimes the Minimates series may miss the premiere of the movie it’s tied into, but we’ve grown accustomed to getting movie Minimates without fail (eventually). Toys R Us used to almost always have their own remixed exclusive wave of movie Minimates, but they’ve cut way back in recent years. However, Toys R Us did invest in their own exclusive Amazing Spider-Man 2 Minimates series, and it has now arrived in stores!
While many times Marvel movie Minimates miss the theatrical release of their movie by several weeks (and sometimes even months), that’s not the case at all with the Marvel Minimates Amazing Spider-Man 2 series! And not only did the comic shop and online specialty store assortment of Amazing Spider-Man 2 Minimates hit stores within a week of the movie’s debut, the Toys R Us exclusive Amazing Spider-Man 2 Minimates have arrived in stores as well!
I guess that, given the nature of the story in Amazing Spider-Man 2, Toys R Us passed on having a Gwen Stacy figure? Very strange, though–I can’t remember a Marvel Minimates series containing only six figures being released in many years.
The three packs that are available at Toys R Us all have at least one exclusive figure in them, and are as follows–
Marvel Minimates Translucent Electro & Battle-Damaged Spider-Man: The translucent Electro Minimates figure is probably the single-coolest figure in either assortment of Amazing Spider-Man 2 Minimates. I almost passed on this set purely out of distaste for Electro in the movie, but I ended up making this my sole purchase from the Toys R Us Marvel Minimates Amazing Spider-Man 2 series.
Marvel Minimates Max Dillon & Flashback Spider-Man: I can’t see this being a terribly popular set, seeing as how most everyone loathes the gold-eyed Spider-Man costume from the first Amazing Spider-Man movie. And no offense to Jamie Foxx, but after seeing the Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie, I really don’t want a figure to remind me of his performance as Max Dillon.
Marvel Minimates Amazing Spider-Man 2 Green Goblin & Spider-Man: Finally, we’ve got the only movie Green Goblin figure on the market right now and a regular Amazing Spider-Man 2 Spidey. I thought Dane Dehaan was easily the best thing about that movie, and while I definitely want a Harry Osborn figure, I’ll be opting for the comic store version of this figure instead.
All in all, this Minimates Amazing Spider-Man 2 wave is a bit of a wash for me besides the translucent Electro figure. Is anybody out there excited about these Marvel Minimates Amazing Spider-Man 2 exclusives and planning to pick up a set? Or would Toys R Us have been better-served carrying the Captain America The Winter Soldier Minimates series instead?
