The long-running and prolific Marvel Gallery PVC statues series and Marvel Animated statues line (based on Skottie Young’s designs ) took a rare break last month with no new pieces solicited, but both lines are BACK with all-new entries as part of the Diamond Select Toys February 2022 solicitations: the Marvel Animated Sam Wilson Captain America statue and Marvel Gallery Psylocke statue are now up for pre-order!
I don’t think anyone could have imagined that the Gentle Giant/DST Marvel Babies statues series would still be alive seven years later when it was unveiled at SDCC 2015–but here we are, and here it is with its umpteenth entry, so clearly this budget-priced resin line has longer legs than anyone would have guessed.
Although the Marvel Animated line of mini statues is based solely on Marvel comic books and not live action productions, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that we’re seeing this Sam Wilson Captain America Animated statue debut less than a year after the character premiered in the Disney+ MCU series.
While I thought the era of Captain America comics featuring Sam as Cap was a little underwhelming overall, I’ve always loved this design for Captain America and I’ll be delighted to own a miniature statue of it later this year.
The huge grin and cartoony goggles on this little “Captain Falcon” resin figure are downright adorable, and I think this is really one of the cutest new additions to the line in quite some time. For fifty bucks, this is a value-priced purchase I won’t have to think twice about.
Meanwhile, another female X-Men member joins the team in PVC form with the 10” Marvel Gallery Psylocke figure. I’m quite surprised Jubilee got released in this line before Psylocke, but I suppose there is a first time for everything.
I like the stance that Psylocke is posed in for this statue, and the iconic Jim Lee 90s costume and psychic knife makes this instantly recognizable as the character. I’m not at all enamored with the vapid stare on her face, however, but I can let that slide at this price-point and in this style.
The dark purple-black hair leaves it open-ended whether this is Betsy Braddock or Kwannon, which is a smart choice to appeal to fans of both of Psylocke’s identities (which I truly appreciate, as Tini Howard’s Excalibur made me loathe Betsy).
At 50 bucks for a unique-sculpted 10 inch statue, the value of the Diamond Select Marvel Gallery lineup continues to be unparalleled.
Marvel Gallery Psylocke and Marvel Animated Falcon Captain America are now available for order online and via comic book/specialty stores, and will be released in July 2022. Sam is limited to 3000 pieces that could sell out at any time, while Psylocke is an unlimited PVC that DST can reprint for many years to come.
Thoughts on the latest additions to these long-running lines, Marvel collectors? What pieces have you picked up from either series over the years, and who would you like to see next?
