Given the hundreds and hundreds of 6” Marvel Legends figures Hasbro has cranked out over the last decade, you might think there are few significant characters left needing an update from Toybiz or even needing their first ML action figure. But as it turns out, there’s still some fan-favorites waiting for the limelight—and Hasbro is kicking off the first Spider-Man Marvel Legends 2022 Build-A-Figure wave with one such character! One of the last remaining key characters necessary to complete the Maximum Carnage 90s crossover lineup is the sound-manipulating psychopath herself: the 2022 Marvel Legends Shriek figure is in the house!
Given how many times the Venom 2 movie was delayed and for How long, you would think that the known villainess from the movie’s cast might have an action figure on store shelves by the time the film did arrive in theaters—but nope! Hasbro just barely missed that window, with the Spider-Man Legends Armadillo series arriving a couple weeks too late.
I’m not sure exactly when this figure began shipping since I was hospitalized for a huge swath of September and October, but Shriek was diligently awaiting me amidst a pile of other shipping boxes of toys when I got home.
Carnage’s loony, murderous main squeeze is a character I’ve been wanting to own an action figure of (no, Minimates absolutely do not count) since 1993, so I was ecstatic when Hasbro announced a figure for the Marvel Legends 2022 Spider-Man lineup for this villainous mutant villainess.
Now that she’s on my shelf, am I screaming for joy about this ML Shriek ? Here’s my review..,
Shriek has had a few costumes over the years, but Hasbro went all-in with her most classic and recognizable look for her first super-articulated figure ever.
Just like I’d always dreamed, Sandra Deel looks fresh out of the 90s Maximum Carnage crossover!(Forgive me for using the modern Carnage head in my photos of him for the review—my eyesight is garbage following my strokes and I didn’t realize Cletus had the non-classic head on until I’d already taken the review photos.)
This is inarguably the correct and best choice of costume for this character, and now I’m really jonesing for a Marvel Legends Carrion to complete the main group of villains from this iconic story arc!
While the portrait Hasbro gave Shriek isn’t full-on looney tunes, Sandra does look suitably depraved at least. It would have been awesome if she came with a flashing eye like we’ve seen for Cable, but that was not to be. Alas.
The accessories load out for ML Shriek is sadly extremely weak: besides coming with the humongous torso/main body of the Marvel Legends Armadillo Build-A-Figure, Shriek gets… some alternate hands. And that’s it. Sandra shouldn’t be having a fist. Fight with anybody and she’s got nothing to grasp, do these are some lame-o accessories.
How about an interchangeable screaming head? Powered-up eye effect? Sonic effects pieces like a shield? Or really anything to give her more options for dynamic posing? Sadly, all of these are absent.
What isn’t absent are Shriek’s belt and bracelet, which are separate unpainted pieces added onto the basic figure mold. The bracelet fits fine albeit slightly loosely on Shriek’s left wrist (be careful you don’t lose it when swapping hands!), but the belt is the ultra-loose kind I despise that flops around uncontrollably. I do like the jagged ends of Shriek’s painted-on gloves, though.
Articulation-wise, Shriek has what we’ve become accustomed to from this female body mold:
- ball head, hips and upper torso
- Ball-hinge shoulders
- swivel Biceps
Swivel-hinge wrists
Double-hinged knees and elbows
Swivel thighs
Hinged feet with ankle rockers
The articulation set is decent, and after waiting so long for this character, I am glad she got the newer mold with pin-less joints and swivel biceps. Shriek’s head being so limited by her long hair is troublesome, if not predictable.
Although she’s primarily made of the oft problem-ridden black plastic, this action figure feels quite sturdy to me and I never felt like her joints were going to rip off or break. Shriek stands up decently as well, unlike some occasional unstable female six inch figures.
Overall: Spider-Man legends Shriek is a perfectly average Hasbro Marvel 6” figure. But that’s it. No character-specific accessories whatsoever and the type of poor-fitting belt I loathe leave this long-awaited figure solidly in the “average” end of the pool. Fine, but far from the transcendental work Hasbro often does.
Loved the review…we’ve missed you man! I hate to hear your going or have gone through so much, prayers be with you and I hope we can have many more to come! I always appreciated your honest reviews, hang in there and stay strong! Thank you for all you have done and contributed to all of us fans 🙂
Glad you’re back and mending.
I’d like to gently point out that she is pinless with swivel biceps, but that doesn’t bring the grade up much, I’m sure.
Mine was weak in the left wrist, making me afraid it’ll rip when swapping hands, so she still has the splayed hand there. Her leg stability and overall silhouette are quite nice.
I like the option of the alternate hands. I’d rather an alternate head any day, but I am not a fan of every woman having those spell casting hands. There are poses you can do that make use of fists without it looking like she’s planning to punch someone. She could just be posing dramatically without looking like she’s casting a spell, for example. Hasbro thinks all women are witches, apparently.
Would be nice to get a sonic effect since that is her power…
I was “fine” with the figure, but more upsetting is how Hasbro just refuses to update their female figure’s torsos to match their male counter-parts. So frustrating when posing them. They usually also have very restrictive heads and arms due to the hair design choices. Oh well. They keep getting my money.
