Of all the companies debuting new Marvel toys and Collectibles at New York Comic Con 2014 over the weekend, no company brought more new Marvel figures to premiere at NYCC 2014 than Diamond Select Toys! Among the items revealed at the show where the third and fourth Diamond Select Toys Marvel Retro 8″ figures: Wolverine and Thor!
The DST Marvel Retro Wolverine 8″ figure set is the very first all-new character to the Mego-homage Marvel Retro 8″ line. The Wolverine Retro Marvel collector’s set will include three different Wolverine costumes: Brown costume Wolverine, Jim Lee Wolverine (90’s X-Men Wolverine) and Logan.
I feel like the unmasked Logan head sculpts may be a bit too gritty and detailed to fit in well with the more vintage-feeling unmasked head sculpts of the figures recreating the classic Mego figures (Peter Parker and Steve Rogers), but I do like the look of the masked Wolverine figures.
Obviously we’re only getting a cursory look at the Thor Retro Marvel 8″ doll right now, but it’s certainly the spitting image of the figure that it’s a recreation of. I loved the heck out of his appearances in Twisted ToyFare Theater years ago, so If there’s one figure I end up buying from the Art Asylum Marvel Retro 8″ series, it’s most definitely going to be Retro Thor!
The Marvel Retro Wolverine 8″ figure collector’s set will be available for order online in the next month or so, and is due for release in Winter 2015 with an MSRP of $80. I’m very interested to see how well this first non-vintage character does in the 8″ Marvel Retro line!
What do you think of Diamond Select Toys’ first attempt at creating a new character in the style of the 1970’s Mego Marvel 8″ figures, Marvel fans? Do you think Wolverine will fit in well with his vintage comrades, or would you prefer is DST sticks to recreating classic figures like Thor?
i dont know.. but this thor is one ugly fella
Crap, crap, and total CRAP!!! Why any hard core collector like myself would want anything like this in his collection would beyond words…….Pending License Approval on that Thor?? I would be like: “GO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD GUYS!!!!”
Keep in mind that these figures are meant to be recreations of the MEGO Marvel figures from the 70’s. If DST made Thor look drastically different from the MEGO Thor, they will have failed in their goal. As ugly as that Thor figure is, a lot of nostalgic adults (and Twisted ToyFare Theater fans) are going to want it.
