Retro is definitely “in” this year as far as figures and collectibles go, and pre-orders have reportedly been very solid for the first of Diamond Select Toys’ Retro Marvel Superheroes figures: the 8″ Mego Spider-Man set. The second character in the lineup will take this line for a walk on the patriotic side, as the Retro Captain America 8″ figure set has now been put up for pre-order!

The advent of the Marvel Retro line by Diamond Select Toys has been a real surprise this year, but supposedly orders have been strong on DST’s 8″ Retro Spider-Man figure set, and now Diamond Select is ready to move on to their second target: Captain America.

Way back when dinosaurs roamed the earth in 1973, Mego decided to fold Marvel Superheroes into the Mego World’s Greatest Superheroes line of 8″ dolls (err, I mean “action figures”). The very first two Marvel figures to debut in the line (following DC World’s Greatest Superheroes of Superman, Batman, Robin and Aquaman) were none other than Spider-Man and Captain America. So releasing a Mego Captain America as the second figure in this 8″ Marvel Retro figures line keeps tradition intact!

As evidenced from the photo of the vintage Mego Captain America in packaging below, the DST Retro Captain America 8″ figure set will even include a reproduction of the same box that Mego used for their Mego Captain America World’s Greatest Superheroes figure 40 years ago. Doesn’t get much more classic than that!

Of course, there’s a rather huge change-up between the original Mego Captain America and Diamond Select Toys’ Retro Captain America figure–the inclusion of a ton more options and extra pieces! Why settle for just an exact replica of the 1974 Mego Captain America figure (complete with box!), when you can also have two other complete outfits (including alternate heads) to make your doll into a WWII Soldier Steve Rogers or a more modern-looking Captain America?

Diamond Select Toys didn’t specifically state the edition size of this 8″ Captain America Retro figure in the solicitation, but they previously stated that all of the figures in the DST Marvel Retro figure line were expected to be limited editions of 3,000 pieces. So unless something has changed, we can expect that to be the edition size for Retro Mego Captain America as well.

The Captain America 8″ Retro Figures Box Set is now up for pre-order, with an expected release date of Q1 2015 (DST themselves say March 2015, some retailers say January 2015–either way, it’s Q1 2015). Retail price for this classic boxed set is $80, but some online retailers have it discounted to $69.99 for earlier adopters–so it pays to pre-order if you know this retro Captain America set is going to be for you.
