Marvel Select Avengers Infinity War Figures Hi-Res Photos!

While the Avengers Infinity War merch train has slowed down quite a bit in the last few months, it hasn’t rolled to a complete stop just yet! After being announced way back in the spring, Diamond Select Toys finally revealed the Marvel Select Infinity War Figures shipping in December 2018 at SDCC. But those who couldn’t attend the show don’t have to rely on con-goer photos anymore—DST has shared the first official hi-res images of Captain America, Iron Spider, Thor and Groot!

Marvel Select Avengers Infinity War Figures Captain America Groot Iron Spider Thor

In order to take their time developing the most movie-accurate MCU figures possible, Diamond Select Toys’ Marvel Select movie action figures usually end up hitting stores quite a bit after the movie the toys are based upon has left theaters.

As such, a lot of times, characters are solicited based solely off of silhouettes and without seeing the actual toy prototypes. Such was the case with the Avengers Infinity War Select figures. But at SDCC 2018, DST debuted all four figures for attendees to see and photograph—and now official hi-res photos are available of the quartet!

Marvel Select Avengers Infinity War Thor and Groot FiguresMy favorite of the four figures is actually the smallest of the four and the one that comes as a “freebie” packed with Thor: Adolescent Groot. I thought that Hasbro did a really nice job with their Legends Teen Groot, but for those who don’t want to buy the 3-Pack I reviewed last month, this is a very nice alternative with superior paint.

The Marvel Select Infinity War Thor that comes with Teen Groot looks exceptionally good as well, but I’m a little bit put off by the very visible scar on the prototype’s face. I never noticed a scar on Thor’s face in the movie, but if it was there, I don’t think it was nearly this prominent. An excellent-looking figure otherwise, however.

Marvel Select Infinity War Captain America Figure with Shields

Bearded Chris Evans is seemingly ridiculously difficult to capture in toy form, as basically ever company’s attempt (even Hot Toys!) has slightly missed the mark. I’m not sure Diamond Select completely nailed the Chris Evans portrait with this Captain America either, but there’s no doubt it looks worlds better than the SH Figuarts and Marvel Legends attempts.

Comparatively, this figure is a grand slam, and will likely be the new default 6”-7” Infinity War Captain America on my shelf. I also really appreciate that he comes with four Wakandan shields (two extended and two retracted)!

My least favorite of the four Diamond Select Avengers Infinity War action figures is the Iron Spider Spider-Man. I can’t quite place my finger on it, but something about the look of this figure feels ‘off’ to me. Maybe it’s the lack of a paint wash that the other figures have or maybe it’s the smoothness of the sculpt, but it really does look weird to me. Love the metallic paint and robot arms, though!

Avengers Infinity War Marvel Select Iron Spider Spider-Man FigureThe Marvel Select Avengers Infinity War Figures are scheduled to ship out in December 2018, although it’s unclear if they’ll make it in time to serve as Christmas presents. Luckily, I’m buying these as holiday gifts for myself, so it’s less of an issue for me than it is for those who have a stricter gifting deadline! Heh.

We’re still a few months (and some packaged photos) away from these figurines being released, but based off our first official hi-res images, what do you think? How does DST’s take on these four movie characters compare with Hasbro and Bandai’s efforts, and will any of these Select versions be becoming the default for the character in *your* display?

  1. I think that the Cap is just about the best I’ve seen. While still not perfect it’s as you say worlds better than some the others !! I really like the Thor. I would have liked them to use the arms from the first Select movie Thor in black or a new sculpt of something new as the articulation wasn’t too good on the first one. Or just black so they would be more movie accurate. That’s an easy fix though. Love the Groot !!! He looks great !!! The Iron Spidey is a little off. There doesn’t seem to be enough texture on the suit and the colour is a little bright. In fact the 7” KO Iron Spidey in some ways actually looks a little better !! But it doesn’t have ankle rockers and the articulation is bad but hey, they were very cheap at $11/£8.30 . You can’t really complain !!!
I’ve still had them all pre ordered since day one so after these pics I can’t wait for them to drop !!! Even though I’ve had customs made for ages it’s not the same as the real thing !! One of each for display and one of each left in the box I think !! I just really hope that they managed to get the sizes right as they’ve been very hit and miss ( more miss than hit) especially with Thor 🤞 !!!

  2. No, on one can ever get Chris Evan’s face right, but I do find the actual toy (not from online photos) of the unmasked headsculpt from Captain America/Crossbones 2 pack come close. I don’t like this Marvel Select headsculpt either, it looks worse than the Marvel Legends one as far as I’m concern. I am however interested in the Wakanda shields. I know Marvel Select are 7″ scaled, but the one shield from Marvel Legends is too big anyway, so maybe these will work for Marvel Legends as well. I bought the Marvel Select Gladiator Hulk and gave his weapons to the Marvel Legends Hulk to replace his limp weapons. Marvel Legend’s “T” crotch with circular hip articulations always bother me though, it just doesn’t look good.

  3. I had plans of purchasing the Thor figure , but going by the photo you supplied I’m having second thoughts about this. The body’s form seems to straight and plain. It seems more like a “titans” figure, and the joints are too obvious.

  4. Captain America’s face looks like Waldorf with Statler’s beard & mustache. Iron Spider looks weird to me because of the colored robot legs. They are the only ones to color the legs like the movie, even Hot Toys painted them just plain gold.

  5. Y’know what’s throwing me about Spidey? The hands. Two fists just seems odd, and really limits posing options, keeping him out of most of the traditional Spider-Man poses. Hopefully they throw some alternate open hands in there.

  6. Cap’s upper torso looks too skinny. He doesn’t have that “V” shape you would expect an athletically muscular person to have. A bit of a disappointment for me.

  7. EM, I’ve noticed this issue with Diamond Select Cap figures. It’s their aesthetic choice, I guess. Doesn’t ever look right.

    • The last 2 Select Cap figures have had zero definition. I have no idea why they keep doing this. The Winter Soldier Cap was slightly better but still not a great shape. Don’t get me wrong I like Select and won’t change now but there is almost away a fix of some kind to be done on every figure and there really shouldn’t be !!! The worst part is that it’s normally things that you would think they would see themselves. Caps upper body is a prime example. Chris Evans looks like a Dorito in the movies !! Even if you do customs this isn’t really fixable just like Civil War Iron Mans height. We’ve had three different sizes of Thor !!! I can’t imagine if you were designing the figures not sitting at a desk and having the older figures and characters that go with them around you so you could get a sense of scale and musculature !! I see people ask about this on Ask Diamond Select and I’ve seen people get some really sarcastic or salty answers in response. It’s not good when they say things like “Well, we don’t do figures in teams “ ?!? and that was about the three Civil War figures that came with the Avengers base/wall diorama !! Designed to be posed together. I fail to see how that’s not a team. Anyway I think that they let themselves down sometimes in needlessly stupid ways. It really is something that they need to address !! Sorry this was such a long answer !! In short, I agree 👍
