REVIEW: Marvel Animated Logan Statue (Skottie Young)

I’ve been collecting the Skottie Young inspired Marvel Animated statues since their inception over half a decade ago, so I figured it was high time I review one of the several dozen little buggers I have. And what better place to start than the recently-restocked Marvel Animated Logan statue, an X-Men Wolverine piece I wasn’t even sure I even needed myself…?

Marvel Animated Logan Statue Review

Although a love of the X-Men runs through my blood, Wolverine has never been one of my favorite team members. Angry loner Raphael-types like Logan have just never been all that relatable to me, I guess.

Whatever the reason, the first piece in the Gentle Giant lineup of Marvel Babies mini statues that I didn’t pre-order was Wolverine, and it ended up being a colossal pain to track down after being limited to just 900 pieces (although I did eventually find one in an unlikely, rarely visited comic book store down the street from my house).

Even after that misstep, I still hesitated on whether or not I also needed a Skottie Young Logan statue, and failed to pre-order that as well. Predictably, it sold out reasonably fast after it was released, but I was able to snag a restock this time without a big fuss. Am I glad I did…?

Well, yes and no. Logan feels like a wholly different character to me when he’s in his civilian guise, and this statue definitely has a distinctly different flavor from its Wolverine counterpart.

Marvel Animated Wolverine Logan Figure Back

The trouble is, this is one of the few Skottie Young statues that just doesn’t feel cute. Logan the character has a certain grittiness to him that doesn’t always fit with the bright-colored costumes around him, and I feel like that carries over to this resin figure.

I’m not saying that that makes this figure bad, necessarily, but I do think he displays better as a stand-alone away from the more cartoony entries in the line. Standing about 4” tall, Logan has a very “cel-shaded” type of paint job that looks fantastic, and an absolutely psychotic smile etched on his face. It’s quite an expressive look, but like I said, not one that I think complements the cutesier characters in the lineup well.

There’s blue and purple areas of paint deco on Logan’s hair and jeans that do an excellent job of evoking comics-styled artwork, and his little. “X” belt buckle is rather sweet. I think painting Logan’s adamantium claws in blue instead of silver/grey also looks surprisingly good.

Logan Skottie Young Animated Marvel Statue Review

Ordinarily I’m pretty good at identifying the exact Skottie Young cover that one of these Marvel Animated statues is based on, but that’s not the case in this instance. In fact, even a brief Google search couldn’t turn up what I was looking for this time. I have a NYCC 2018 enamel Logan pin in this design, but I cannot pinpoint the precise comic book source of the art. Anyone?

Quality-wise, there was only one little blemish above Logan’s left eye that I didn’t notice until after taking review photos. This was a quick fix, as my wife was able to dab a dot of paint and have Logan all patched up (no, that’s not a Patch joke) in no time flat.

Review Diamond Select Logan Animated Marvel Babies Statue

Overall: Although I had put off purchasing him myself until I became worried about missing out, I’m actually glad I eventually broke down for this Skottie Young Logan statue. The “feel” is different from the other X-Men in this line, but as a stand-alone sub-$50 piece I quite like this interpretation of Logan. The paint deco is applied in an interesting way, and the quality was nearly infallible. Logan’s portrait is still a bit too deranged for my tastes, but I think the statue is solid overall.
