REVIEW: Marvel Legends Monster Venom Build-A-Figure

I’m at the halfway point in my series of Venom Legends reviews, so I think it’s time I spotlighted the character more people requested a review of than any other in the wave: the Marvel Legends Monster Venom Build-A-Figure! The Monster Venom BAF is burning up the aftermarket and selling for about 75 bucks alone right now–is Hasbro’s bulkiest symbiote action figure ever worth the big money that collectors are paying for it?

Marvel Legends Monster Venom Build-A-Figure Review

For those whose experience with Venom ends with the classic comic book, you may be wondering what the heck is up with this massive, Hulk-like bodybuilder Venom action figure.

Basically, in the modern Venom comic books, sometimes the host will lose control of the symbiote and it will freak the eff out go into this monstrous, crazed form. It’s not an every day (or every issue) event, but when it does happen, it’s pretty dang blood-curdling. And hey—what better impetus for a Marvel Legends figure than that, right…?

Marvel Legends Venom Build-A-Figure ReviewAt a glance, it’s instantly apparent that this is the bulkiest, most ripped Venom action figure that Hasbro has ever produced. With muscles and veins bulging everywhere, this is the stuff that nightmares are made of. Being easily the scariest Venom Legends figure ever definitely works in this toy’s favor.

Venom Marvel Legends Series Monster Venom Build-A-Figure Pieces Unassembled CompleteYou have to purchase all six figures in the Marvel Legends Venom Series to get the parts to build this Monster Venom Build-A-Figure—which I think is totally fair, given the weight and size of this beast. His upper body is so think that it has to be broken in half just to fit inside Spider-Ham’s package!

Monster Venom Build-A-Figure Size Comparison with 6" VenomWhile the BAF is only about 7” tall, he’s still heavy and incredibly thick (although I think the younger generation has changed the spelling to “thicc”). I don’t think that anybody will argue that this should have been a single-packed figure—that’s blatantly impossible when you look at this monster’s size.

Close-Up of Monster Venom Marvel Legends Figure HeadThe Marvel Legends Venom Build-A-Figure features one of the most extreme head sculpts we’ve seen on a ML figure in quite some time, which works both for and against it. I love the insane, wide-mouthed portrait with protruding tongue—but a hinged jaw or even an interchangeable head would have improved the options for this figure by leaps and bounds.

As straight-up cool as the roaring head on this Build-A-Figure may be, it just does not seem suitable for every situation you might want to pose him into.

Venom Legends Build-A-Figure Monster Venom HasbroAlong with having just one head, Monster Venom also comes with just one pair of non-changeable hands. Thank god Hasbro gave us flexed hands with humongous claws on them, as these hands are a lot more appropriate and intimidating than plain old fists (and believe me, I’ll be complaining about that a-plenty when I review the single-packed Eddie Brock).

Monster Venom Legends BAF Eating Carnage FigureThe clawed hands not only look terrifyingly deadly, but they’re also capable of grasping other figures tightly by the head, arm or leg. Because of the Venom BAF’s large feet and heft, this mean the figure can stably hoist up other figures and dangle them around—almost certainly the most fun thing you can do with it!

Trendrils on Back of Monster Venom BAF Hasbro 2018Monster Venom also has four total tendrils emanating from his back and arms. They’re a subtle detail that I think really adds to the visual appeal of the toy.

Marvel Legends Carnage vs Monster Venom FigureWhile the articulation on this figure isn’t quite as extensive as what we expect from a typical ML action figure, it’s still decent considering how hard it is to articulate a bulky behemoth like this. The toy’s flexibility is impressive, but I think Hasbro could have gone a bit farther with it.

Hasbro Venom Legends Monster Venom Build-A-Figure ReviewThe complete articulation scheme consists of:

  • Ball-Hinge Head and Shoulders
  • Upper Torso Ab Crunch
  • Swivel Biceps, Waist, Thighs and Shins
  • Hinged Elbows
  • Double-Hinged Knees
  • Swivel-Hinge Wrists
  • Hinged Ankles with Rockers

Butterfly swivels are obviously impossible for a body mold shaped like this one, but I would have really liked to have seen double-hinged elbows implemented. Without them, it can be a bit tough to dynamically pose his enormous arms in just the manner that you’d like.

Purple Venom Marvel Legends 2018 BAFThe last thing I need to mention may be the most controversial about: the colors. All of the white paintwork on my BAF Venom is superb—but it’s also indisputably painted on top of purple. There’s no bones about it—when you’re in natural lighting or a well-lit room, this toy is unquestionably purple and not black. I would wager that that coloration is really going to bug some collectors, as Venom action figures are traditionally, well… black.

Venom BAF Hasbro Marvel Legends 2018 vs Carnage Action FigurePersonally, I think the metallic dark purple used for Venom’s body looks amazing contrasted to the white paint on him—but it can also be a little distracting just because he’s so purple in bright lights. I don’t have a huge issue with the color (as Venom has been colored purple on occasion in the comics), but I don’t blame those who are disgruntled with the palette choice.

Monster Venom Marvel Legends 2018 Build-A-FigureOverall: While I think the Monster Venom Marvel Legends Build-A-Figure is a pretty neat figure overall, it’s definitely not perfect. The very purple paint is going to bother a lot of fans, the single-hinge elbows really hurt the arms’ range of motion, and the head and hands don’t leave a lot of options for diverse posing.

That said, this is a very different symbiote action figure than any that Hasbro has done before, and it’s a startling contrast when posed against “normal”-sized figures like Carnage, Poison and Scream. The Monster Venom BAF absolutely looks amazing (albeit purple)—it just has limited value as far as putting it into a variety of poses goes.

This whole series is strong enough that I’d rather buy the set (and I did) than pay 75 smackers just for the Monster Venom Build-A-Figure, but if you absolutely don’t want the other figures, I still give this figure a recommendation–just do your best to find one for a decent price on the aftermarket.

REVIEW: Marvel Legends Monster Venom Build-A-Figure — 5 Comments

  1. “For those whose experience with Venom ends with the classic comic book, you may be wondering what the heck is up with this massive, Hulk-like bodybuilder Venom action figure.”

I would be SHOCKED if there was anyone wondering why Venom is this big. Because this is Venom’s PROPER size.
Outside of his very earliest most primitive appearances, THIS is just how big Venom is ALL the time. He’s HUGE.
Most people look at the tiny little Hyperion mold Venom and wonder why the hell Hasbro made such a wimpy little Venom.

TECHNICALLY, this Venom is like 5 inches shorter than he should be for a “Monster Venom”. This is REGULAR Venom size.
Mac Gargan’s real MONSTER Venom form is about 12 feet tall, twice the height of a regular person, wide enough to take up half of a street, with fists the size of trashcans.

And this is what bothers me about this figure.
    He’s not really ANYTHING.
His size is ordinary Eddie Brock Venom.
His head sculpt is ordinary Eddie Brock Venom.
His spider pattern is Mac Gargan Venom.
His name IMPLIES that he should be the huge 12″ hulking super monster Mac Gargan Venom.
The only time Mac Gargan’s Venom has Eddie Brock-style eyes is when it’s in the super massive form, so it SEEMS like that’s what they were going for, but then he’s waaaaaay too small.
It ALMOST looks like Flash Thompson’s Flashpoint Venom, but the chest symbol is all wrong.
He’s a mixed up Venom that doesn’t really exist, and satisfies NONE of the versions we need to see…

And he’s PURPLE. Straight-up, blatantly purple.

And they didn’t give him the Sasquatch-style neck articulation, which was forgivable on Man-Thing, since Man-Thing came out first, but what’s the excuse here?
The Venom’s got the same type of disappointing/frustrating limited neck articulation that Man-Thing had, DESPITE coming out after Sasquatch, and Sasquatch FLAWLESSLY solving the neck articulation problem for exactly this shape of bulky hunched up characters.

And COME ON with the jaw articulation… If Lizard and Sauron can have articulated jaws, what POSSIBLE excuse is there for this?

This BAF frustrates the hell out of me.

We STILL somehow don’t have a single great classic style Marvel Legends Venom figure.
I think Agent Venom is technically the only great Marvel Legends Venom in ANY form whatsoever…
    – Superior Venom is okay….
    – Venom SpaceKnight is some weapon hands and butterfly joints away from being great…
    – The Hyperion mold Venoms are mediocre. The Hyperion mold is flat-out garbage. They could’ve put the new Venom on the Omega Red mold, and THEN we would’ve had a great small-size classic-style Venom, but nooooooooo, they HAD TO recycle the stupid Hyperion body for the millionth time….. (Not to mention the ludicrously huge Eddie Brock head on the new one)
And now Venom Punisher is stuck with the same terrible mold too (not that I actually care about Venom Punisher, but it’s still unfortunate).

Hopefully they find a way to release a better version of this “Monster Venom” with the proper Eddie Brock-style spider pattern, actual BLACK paint, and some sort of improved head, jaw, and neck situation.
And, hell, I’d happily take a version of this with a proper Mac Gargan Venom head, black paint, and maybe the scorpion tail.

This thing is SO CLOSE to being good in SO MANY different directions, but it falls short in ALL of them.
I want to love it, but it actually genuinely makes me a little angry, because I genuinely don’t understand how Hasbro managed to screw this thing up is SO MANY different little ways.

    • No, this is not Venom’s proper size. Or look. The regular Venom figure in this wave is. God I am so sick of seeing your rude, self-centered, myopic comments.

  2. Great BAF. I’d say he is in the running for best BAF of the year although Sauron probably has him beat. Apocalypse is up there too but it mildly annoys me that both hands are fists. I like cull obsidian as well although he’s not really entirely faithful to either mcu or comic versions of the character

  3. Remember the god awful toybiz original Spider-Man Classics Venom figure? One of the best Venom figures came out in a cheaper Spider-Man line with a blue card I think.

  4. Meh, imo the best Venom figure is still the Marvel Select Madness Venom.
This BAF is not bad but he is far from perfect. The purple color doesn’t actually bother me at all, it just makes him look rubbery and sticky which is exactly how I imagine Venom to feel. I agree with other comments that he certainly could have been larger, this pretty much is just the regular size of the guy. In the comics he’s generally around 8 or 9 feet tall and sometimes more, so the scale of this guy is on par with regular plain ol Venom – NOT Monster Venom who would essentially be 1 1/2 of this figure tall if it were to be more on scale.
What does bother me is the lack of articulation and head/arm accessories. There is really no excuse for not having another head sculpt or articulated jaw, and a secondary hand would have been really nice instead of that stupid Spider Ham head.
Overall it is a nice looking figure, and if you are a Venom fan then you are already a fan of roided-out toothy monsters which is exactly what you are getting with this guy. I’d expect the value on this figure to climb in the coming years as it is one of the better (looking at least) BAF figures.
