Today I’m going to interrupt the seemingly never-ending stream of 2018 Marvel Legends figures that I still have to write reviews for to talk about a statue I’ve been looking forward to writing a review for for almost a year! I analyzed the outstanding Cable companion piece last month, and now it’s Deadpool’s turn! Is the 11” Marvel Premier Collection Deadpool statue worth 135 bucks shipped, or is Cable better off all by his lonesome?
Well, having unboxed mine and spent some time with him, I’d say the answer is yes…
Diamond Select chose a pose for Deadpool that’s not totally “museum” and boring, but also not crazy dynamic (like the insane Sideshow Heat-Seeker Deadpool Statue). To me, that’s the way to go: giving Wade a pose that can exude some of his personality without crossing into the territory of zany all-out lunacy.
DST Deadpool is posed with one leg raised into a mound of rocky terrain, his other leg extended for support, his right arm holding a katana behind his head, and his left hand pointing charismatically. This pose captures a lot of Wade Wilson’s unique charm, and is one that wouldn’t easily work with any other major Marvel character.
Jean St. Jean sculpted Deadpool with his trademark asymmetrical “face” going on, with one eye-hole slightly larger than the other. It’s not too exaggerated, and I think it works quite well capturing Wade’s personality without going over-the-top.
This statue is one solid chunk of polystone resin with no assembly required. I’m a fan of this, as it means no potential damage to anything during assembly—just open, pop out and enjoy.
Like all Marvel Premier Collection statues to-date, Deadpool is limited to 3000 pieces and comes with a numbered authenticity card. 3000 might seem like a high number, but with the ultra-low pricing on this line, the popular pieces like Venom, Thanos, Moon Knight and so forth are going to run out very quickly.
The paint apps on this Deadpool Premier Collection Statue are clean and well-executed. The red on DP’s costume is a bit more faded than the vivid red I’ve become used to, but I think it makes the statue feel more realistic and in-line with the gritty look of Cable. The applications are all on-target, neat and clean.
Sculpting-wise, while there’s not quite as much detailing possible as you’ll find on a much larger statue, this is still a hyper-detailed figure. There’s bumps and wrinkles everywhere on the costume, the musculature is very clearly defined—this statue is a lot more lifelike than you’d expect for its size and price.
Note that while this statue is only about 10.5”-11” tall, it’s billed as 12” scale, which just isn’t the case. That doesn’t bother me, as ‘Pool is properly scaled to Cable and he seems to be almost the exact scale as the old 1/7 Bowen Designs statues I have a million (hyperbole) of, but those expecting trust sixth scale might be let-down.
If there’s one thing about this statue I’m not crazy about, it’s the base. While I like the rocky terrain just fine—I’ll usually prefer an environmental base to a plain black one—there’s a chunk of technology between Wade’s legs (no, not that thing between Wade’s legs) that really distracts me.
It’s painted nice enough, but I’m not even sure what it’s supposed to be. A shield generator? A bomb? A random hunk of tech? I have no idea, but it really disrupts the flow of the statue as a whole and doesn’t add any value to the scene for me. I wish this was omitted entirely, honestly.
But since I just mentioned “value”, let’s chat about that with regard to this piece. While the DST Deadpool retails for $150, you can get it for $135 and free shipping from EE (which is where I ordered mine). 135 bucks shipped for an 11 inch resin statue these days is a *mind-blowing* value in a world where 18 inch Sideshow statues now regularly retail for about 600 bucks.
This piece obviously doesn’t have the same size or presence as a quarter-scale Premium Format Figure, but for those who are space or money conscious, this is a top-notch choice. While not impressive to the same level as the Marvel Premier Collection Moon Knight Statue I reviewed earlier this year, for what it is, this DP is a winner.
Overall: While the Marvel Premier Collection Cable was a clear Grand Slam on sight, Deadpool is a mite more difficult to score. Would I have bought this Deadpool Statue, even if I didn’t have Cable…? Probably not. But that has more to do with market saturation for the character than anything specifically wrong with this figure.
In a vacuum, this is a solid Deadpool Statue with a fun pose, well-done paint apps, and great sculpting and proportions. If you’re buying (or already bought) Cable, then I feel like uniting the duo with Marvel Premier Collection Deadpool is a must. And even if Cable won’t be on your shelf, if you just want an outstanding, wonderfully-priced Deadpool, this DST Statue is the way to go. Terrific piece and an excellent value in today’s marketplace.
Another excellent review. Just for your information, if you put DP on the left of Cable, you’ll notice the weird techno thingie kind’a fits into Cable’s counterpart. 🙂 Just saying.
