Spider-Man Across the Spiderverse is delayed until June 2023, but fans waiting for at least a nibble from the sequel to Into the Spider-Verse get a preview of next year’s sure-to-be-merchandised-like-crazy movie in the form of the latest Funko Marvel Collector Corps box! Available exclusively on Amazon, the box brings us 2 exclusive Funko POP figures, a new shirt and more! Here’s my full review and spoilers for the box…
The last time I reviewed a Marvel Collector Corps Funko box, it was for the I Am Groot box that I ended up liking more than the actual I Am Groot shorts on Disney+.
I wasn’t sure precisely what to expect from a mystery box for a movie that’s delayed until 8 months from now—but if I were to randomly guess what “safe” choices Funko could possibly make for such a box, it would look exactly like this one.
Popping open the box, the first items you come across are a Miles Morales sticker and a pin of a Spider-Man 2099 head. Both of these items look nice enough, but are also the sort of “filler” we’ve all come to expect from these Collector Corps boxes. I miss the days of comic books with variant covers in these boxes. Alas.
The next item in the box is a black POP Tees shirt with masked Ghost Spider (Spider-Gwen) and Miles Morales Spider-Man above the Across the Spider-Verse logo. The shirt runs a little smaller than usual, but I really love the style of the design and the black/red/blue/white color scheme. My favorite item in the box for sure.
The final two items enclosed in the box are (of course) two exclusive Funko POP Vinyls figures: new versions of Miles and Gwen Stacy. I think a fun variant of Spider-Man Noir or Spider-Ham or even Peni or SP//DR would have been a much more exciting choice than what we got here, but Funko is clearly afraid at this point of the masses unsubscribing if every MCC POP isn’t a highest top-tier character.
Ghost Spider is unmasked and springing into action, with her cool teal sneakers and blonde-pink gradient hair being highlights of her design as always.
I appreciate that this is something dynamic for Gwen, but I’m getting tired of the overabundance of merch for her at this point.
And speaking of which, the other Pop is a masked Miles leaping into action with bio-electrical energy effects.
The electric effects are a neat twist, but I would have much preferred an animated unmasked Miles, as we get relatively little merch of him unmasked from these films.
Neither Marvel POP is bad, but they both feel rather “been there; done that” to me. I desperately wanted something a bit different to catch my attention, despite this dynamic-posed duo being well-done for what they are.
Overall: Funko played about as safe as you can get with this box, which may appeal to the masses, but leaves me feeling more than a mite bored. Two exclusive Pops, a cool shirt and a couple tchotchkes for 30 bucks shipped is a solid value, but the focus on the umpteenth pieces of merch for Miles and Gwen is rather dull. The decal and pin are both “fine”, and I really like the shirt, but I strongly wish we’d seen a wild or different character other than Miles or Ghost Spider.
What do you think of this newest MCC box, Spidey fans? Has Funko delivered anything you’re interested in here, or were you hoping for more creative choices from this box?
