I’m making a gargantuan effort this year to cut back on 1/4 statues as much as I possibly can, as prices keep getting higher, boxes keep getting bigger, and my storage space keeps getting smaller (as in, I have like none left). But Sideshow Collectibles is seemingly determined to foil me, as their Marvel pre-orders the past few months have all been pretty spectacular. And their latest piece just may be the best comic Cap ever: the Sideshow Exclusive Captain America Premium Format Figure is now up for order!

During the 12 Months of Sideshow, there was only one Marvel teaser photo that instantaneously caught my eye as a future absolute must-have: the new 2018 Premium Format Captain America Statue.

While Sideshow Collectibles has released a number of Captain America statues over the years (including action pose and even movie Caps), it’s been a long time since they’ve done a plain old museum-posed Captain America comic-based statue.

Of course, the allure here isn’t just that Sideshow is making a new Captain America PF Statue—it’s that the one they’re coming out with is downright awesome.

While this Captain America Statue is more comic book-inspired than something taken directly from the comics, it still has a “comic book superhero” look and feel that matches the new vibe of the new Wolverine and Black Widow statues perfectly.

This new 21” Cap PFF has a commanding presence, with a stern look on his face and a powerful stance.

There’s no bells and whistles here—this is simply a museum pose done right, with an insane amount of sculpting details and textures bringing this piece to life.

As has been the case with most of the latest Marvel Premium Format Figures, this Steve Rogers statue is 100% sculpted with no soft goods at all. I’m good with that—while characters like Magneto can benefit from soft goods, I think Cap’s costume design really shines being all polystone resin.

The base is simple and complements the figure without distracting from it: a SHIELD Helicarrier platform with some Ultron debris on it. Nicely-done and not at all overbearing.

For a change, the Exclusive Edition of this statue may not be a necessity for a lot of collectors. Rather than an essential alternate head like the recent Black Widow, Wolverine and Magneto statues are getting, the Cap EX bonus is… an interchangeable hand clutching an Ultron Sentry head.

Now, that’s not to say it’s not a cool extra—and I actually do think it adds somewhat to the scene created by the bases—but some folks are probably just plain not going to care about this Exclusive version. For 15 bucks extra, I’ll take it anyway—YMMV.

Like the Black Widow that went up for order a couple weeks back, there’s one big drawback to this Cap Statue: the price-tag. The Sideshow EX Cap is marked at $585, with the Collector Edition (AKA “Regular Version”) at $570.

There’s no denying that prices on Sideshow Premium Formats are going up substantially year after year, and it’s not a matter of time until collectors (like me!) are priced out. This will be replacing the Action Captain America in my collection to be my only 1/4 Cap, so I won’t take too bad a hit from this piece, but rising prices are definitely a worry.

The Sideshow Captain America Exclusive Premium Format Figure is now up for order, and is scheduled to be released in late 2018/early 2019. There’s no set edition size for the EX on this one (Black Widow had just 750 EX set), so Cap ought to last a while on pre-order. I know I want him, though, so I’m getting my payment plan started early.
