As tomorrow is April Fool’s Day, I figured I better get this product preview out of the way today, lest everyone believe that it’s a joke (it’s not–I hate April Fool’s Day with a fiery passion). Announced last week and now fully revealed, Sideshow Collectibles is bringing one of Walt Simonson’s greatest creations to life in diorama form! No, it’s not a new Thor, Loki or even Beta Ray Bill–as unlikely as it may be, the Sideshow Thor Frog Diorama Statue is now available for order!
This will probably really mess with a lot of people’s heads, but this Thor Frog Sideshow Diorama is actually the third high-end Frog of Thunder sculpture to ever be released. The Bowen Frog of Thunder mini-bust (sculpted by John Cleary) began the Throg craze in 2009, and Gentle Giant followed suit with their own Thor Frog mini-bust in 2012.
Both those mini-busts have been immensely popular and are very difficult to come by on the aftermarket, but in the end, they’re just mini-busts. However, in 2014, for the first time ever, Throg’s whole body will finally be seen as a high-end collectible in the form of the Sideshow Collectibles Thor Frog Diorama!
I absolutely adore my Bowen Designs Frog of Thunder bust and its classic appeal, but even I have to admit that the new Sideshow Frog of Thunder 6″ statue is the most amazing-looking Thor Frog collectible ever. While the Sideshow version is a totally different artistic interpretation of Throg, capturing his modern “Pet Avengers” look, it’s also superior in sculpting and paint deco to its predecessors.
Throg’s Frogjolnir hammer and the swamp-like base are exquisitely detailed, and I love the cool, confident pose that the Thor Frog has been sculpted in.
$99 is just the right price for a high-quality statue/diorama of this size, and I think that the Thor Frog is going to look super-cute posed next to the upcoming Sideshow Premium Format Thor statue.
The Sideshow Thor Frog Diorama statue is now available for order on the Sideshow Collectibles website. For the super-low price of $99.99 (seriously, how many Sideshow products these days cost that little?), the Sideshow Frog of Thunder statue is a no-brainer instant purchase for me.
What do you think, Marvel fans? Is the third time the charm for the Frog of Thunder: is this the best high-end Thor Frog sculpture yet?
