Thor 2 The Dark World Hasbro Movie Figures Released!

I heard reports of the Thor: The Dark World figures from Hasbro hitting stores in decent numbers about a week ago, and this weekend I finally managed to track them down in person. Unfortunately, it appears that stores forgot to send Hasbro a memo to let them know that there are thousands (maybe millions) of figures of Thor himself still in stores from two years ago…

Hasbro made the call to skip doing any sort of Thor 2 Marvel Legends 6″ figures for the Thor: The Dark World movie, but at least they decided to opt in for some Marvel Universe style 3 3/4″ Thor The Dark World action figures. Thus far, only one Thor 2 case assortment has been released (or revealed, for that matter), containing two versions of Thor himself, Loki, Kurse and a Dark Elf.

The Thor: The Dark World Wave 1 case assortment is as follows:
(3) Thor
(3) Thor with Blue Cape
(3) Kurse
(2) Loki
(1) Dark Elf

Thor 2011 Movie Figures on Shelves in Fall 2013To the dismay of Marvel collectors everywhere, Hasbro decided that half this case should be composed of figures of Thor himself, so there are six figures of Thor per case. Both the Thor figures actually do look pretty good (Thor even has ankle rockers!), but I’m a bit terrified of seeing 400 Thor figures at my local Toys R Us in a couple months as opposed to the 200 figures (I’m not exaggerating) of Thor himself they’ve had gathering dust for the last two years.

Thor 2 Movie Figures Released Hasbro Toys Dark ElfI had to go to several stores to find a Thor 2 Dark Elf figure, but I did finally run into one at a mall Toys R Us Express store. The articulation on the Dark Elf action figure could be improved, but the paint apps and sculpt look spectacular.

Thor The Dark World Dark Elf Figure CardbackIt’s a real shame that Hasbro picked the only army-builder figure in the entire series to shortpack at one per case, but hey, at least stores will be able to meet the insane demand for Thor himself, right…?

Thor 2 Loki Figure Close-Up Hasbro 3.75"Meanwhile, Loki and Kurse also look terrific, but are a bit limited in articulation as well. Both figures are lacking waist, wrist and ankle articulation entirely, which is a bit of a buzzkill. On the bright side, Kurse is intimidating and the new Loki head sculpt is a vast improvement over the original head.

Thor The Dark World Kurse Figure 3.75" HasbroPresumably there will be a Hasbro 3.75″ Thor The Dark World Series 2 set of figures, since we still need a figure of the Thor 2 movie’s main villain (Malekith), but Hasbro hasn’t confirmed that a Malekith figure is in the works yet at all (in fact, only Diamond Select Toys has announced a Malekith toy at all, as part of their Thor: The Dark World Minimates Wave 53 series).

All five of the Thor The Dark World figures are currently available for order online, although I’ve seen them go in and out of stock several times the last few days.

What do you think about the first set of Thor: The Dark World figures, Marvel collectors? Are you in for whatever 3 3/4″ Thor 2 figures Hasbro churns out, or would you have preferred some 6″ Thor Marvel Legends figures instead?

  2. I’m a sucker for most marvel 3 3/4 scale figures, in fact it’s my preferred scale (aside from those crappy wolverine figures…silver samurai looked like dookie in toy form). Anyway to answer your question, in definitely picking these up! Excellent review by the way.

  3. I liked the figures well enough, the articulation was a let down.

    Shame since I consider the engineering on the Thor (2011) figures to be the best I’ve ever seen.

    I think those figures reached a pinnacle and it’s been a backwards slide ever since.

  4. The picture of the shelf full of Thor 1 action figures was taken a couple of years ago. Where is this imaginary “local” TRU store with 200 unsold Thor figs? I have been going around different TRUs lately and I have never seen old stocks of action figures from the first Thor film. I have been to all the TRU branches from New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Washington DC, Florida (Orlando, Miami, Fort Lauderdale)…I have never seen a single Thor 1 hasbro figure. I found a couple of old Thor figs (just 2 pcs to be exact) in one small toys and games shop in Orlando, and some frost giants at Midtown Comics at Times Square, but those were it! The blogger who posted this is a liar.

    • Uh, I took that photo myself a couple months ago, “Thor the Mighty”, and it’s from my local Woburn MA Toys R Us. You should probably go there and check it out for yourself before you go slinging words like “liar” around, lest I start throwing around words like “IP Permanently Banned from Leaving Comments”. Seriously–don’t be a jerk.
