Hasbro Confirms Marvel Universe 3-Packs Cancellation

Fans have been wondering about the fates of the final two Hasbro Marvel Universe Team Packs three-packs for most of 2013, and now the axe has officially fallen. Though the news is pretty much what was expected, it’s still disappointing to hear confirmation that the Marvel Universe Astonishing X-Men and Asgardian three-packs are cancelled. At least, in their current form they are…

Hasbro Marvel Universe Asgardians Team Pack Valkyrie Executioner

MarvelousNews posted a sixteen minute video on YouTube yesterday in which they shared some answers to burning questions that they had sent in to Hasbro. Considering that everything they asked about were things Hasbro has been keeping mum about, you might reasonably assume that most of the news that came back in return was bad news. And you’d be right!

In the Q&A, Hasbro finally officially confirmed that the Marvel Universe Asgardians figures three-pack and the Marvel Universe Astonishing X-Men team pack are both cancelled in their current format and will not be released as three-packs. This news has been long expected and I’ve been speculating about it for a couple months, so I was prepared for the blow when it came.

Hasbro Marvel Universe Astonishing X-Men Team PackThere was a silver lining, however, which is that Hasbro said they’re hoping to incorporate some of the figures from these packs into single-packed figure assortments in the 2014 Hasbro Marvel lines. The optimist in me would like to see all six figures released next year, but I have a hunch based on Hasbro’s response that that’s not in the cards.

Marvel Universe Valkyrie Figure Hasbro 2013 CancelledI’m certain Hasbro will find a way to slot in Thor and Astonishing Cyclops, but the fates of the other four figures are less assured. With a high production cost and the character already having been written out of the comic books, I have serious doubts now that we ever see the Colossus Juggernaut figure released (especially considering the fact that Wolverine Legends Phoenix Five Cyclops has been cancelled despite being more recent and more important). Executioner would likely sell poorly at retail, but hopefully the Marvel Universe Valkyrie and Emma Frost figures at least see a release.

Ordinarily I’d ask how people feel about this latest news, but I imagine no one’s going to chime in with “Good! I’m glad those sets are cancelled!” So instead, let me ask: Which of these cancelled Marvel Universe figures are you hoping make it out in 2014, Marvel collectors?

  1. Cyclops and Emma! Please! Cyclops and Emma! =P (Is it just me, or does she look better in MU format than Legends?)

  2. So is Hasbro or Marvel the villain here?
I really wanted to complete the Wrecking Crew Legends set.
    Ugh.

    • I wouldn’t say that Hasbro is a villain. Hasbro would love to sell all these Marvel figures, but due to horrible case pack-out decisions and bad distribution, stores are apparently unwilling to take on these figures in their present form.

      • Considering how things have been the past few years I think undisputedly Hasbro is to blame. This has been happening since the first wave of legends with them. Prices have continued to escalate, availability is sporadic, and information is scarce.

But Hasbro likes to blame everyone else, blaming Marvel is fair since Marvel made the mistake of giving them the contract, however as much as I’d love to I can’t blame WalMart since how can you commit retail space to an unpredictable product. It looks terrible on them when all they can put on shelves is ANOTHER Iron Man.

But the worst is that Hasbro has repeatedly blamed the consumer. Giving us the responsibility of purchasing Peg-Warmers under threat of cancellation.

        I think to me the most annoying part of it all is the dry spells that coincide with Hasbro owned products;
if there is a TRANSFORMERS or GI JOE film in theaters Marvel product is practically removed from shelves. They go on unofficial Hiatus to limit the shelf market.

I love toys, but it has not been fun collecting them in years, it has become a tired exorcize. I began in the toy biz days, I have the rare figures… I really want Hasbro to be done with this product, but there isn’t anyone else to take over. It’s become a fatalistic hobby. We had a new golden age of toys, and I think we can all see that it is over. Not completely gone, but very much diminished.

  3. I’m kind of relief, I was already stressing about how difficult it would be to find them at the store. I’ve already began to pack away figures, slowly giving up a hobby that in recent years has become expensive and stressful with fewer moments of jubilation

  4. Why would the Executioner sell poorly at retain? Emma & Him were the ones I was looking forward to the most! Hasbro wants to own the top brand names but doesn’t know how to market them.

  5. I want that Colosuss juggernaut! If any one knows somewhere
that I can get it, let me know please!
