Sometimes an upcoming Marvel Legends wave is rather predictable and it’s easy to guess what characters will comprise the series. And sometimes… not so much. Such is the case with the latest wave of ML just announced yesterday morning via Hasbro livestream: the all-comics Marvel Legends Controller Series, featuring long-awaited niche figures of Speedball, Blue Marvel and more that is now up for order!

We’ve gotten some weird mixes of comic book-based Marvel Legends action figures in the past, but this newest wave that Hasbro lifted the veil on just today may be the most bizarre assortment ever!
Featuring never-before-done characters and also a couple redos of characters I never expected to see done, it’s the 2022 Marvel Legends Controller Series!
While The Controller is not the most obscure Build-A-Figure that we’ve ever seen from Hasbro (certainly not on the same level as Tutus the white tiger man), he’s still a rather relatively unknown villain to the masses.
A mind-controlling supervillain primarily associated with Iron Man, The Controller Build-A-Figure looks a lot like a blue Thanos with a new head—because he is!
Borrowing parts heavily from the most recent Marvel Legrnds Thanos figure, the Controller BAF also features some all-new parts like a hand holding his signature Slave Discs and a rockin’ new head.
I don’t know that The Controller is a character that will serve well as a “carrot” to promote sales of every other figure in a Legends wave, but he’s a neat and rather unexpected addition to the line. Fun stuff!
And speaking of “fun”, let’s jump to my favorite thing in this whole wave: the Marvel Legends Speedball figure! I’ve been wanting a Robbie Baldwin toy since I was a kiddo, but never was sure one would be a reality, so this is a real treat.
I always wondered how Speedball’s kinetic bubbles would be handled in toy form, and Hasbro accomplished this feat by… painting some onto the figure. It’s not exactly a mind-blowingly inspired 6” Speedball, but I’ll be psyched to put it next to Nova, Night Thrasher and Firestar nonetheless.
Another character making their mass market action figure debut here is Marvel Legends Blue Marvel. The matter-manipulating Dr. Adam Brashear is among the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Universe, despite being a rather new (2008) addition to the 616 Universe.
As a member of The Ultimates, Blue Marvel was pivotal in the temporary transformation of Galactus to Lifebringer. I don’t know that Adam will sell well at retail—AT ALL—but it’s always cool to see the ML range of heroes expanding with deep cuts like Dr. Brashear.
Although she has previously appeared as a Minimates figure and an Agents of SHIELD POP Vinyl figure, Hasbro will be giving Daisy Johnson her most prominent piece of merch ever with the Marvel Legends Quake figure.
I seriously doubt we’ll ever see another of Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Warriors members in toy form, and even Hasbro seems a bit wary here—alternate parts to turn Quake into an updated Maria Hill with pin-less joints are also included. Love the gauntlets and a great-looking Quake figure regardless.
In a move I never, ever saw coming, we get a new Marvel Legends Madame Hydra figure with White Queen arms and a much-improved articulation set. I’m not sure many collectors were pining away for this, but it’s a fine-looking update.
The other remake in this wave is a revised comic-styled US Agent using the Kraven body mold. This figure is a bit bulkier than the 2013 US Agent Legends figure, but only seems like a minor upgrade to me. Nothing I’m terribly hyped about, but nice to see a comics John Walker back on the shelves for newer fans.
The first-ever pin-less Marvel Legends Iron Man figure will also debut in this assortment in the form of the all-new Alex Ross-designed Iron Man Mark 70 figure from recent comic books. This seemed like an inevitable action figure for the future, but I’m genuinely surprised to see it so soon. Really nice effects pieces and iconic red and gold armor.
Rounding out the series, we have the modern Donny Cates Thor Marvel Legends figure! Time flies, and I really didn’t think we’d get a King Thor Donny Cates already. Cates’ arc with Thor as the Herald of Galactus was really something special, though, and I’m hyped to get this action figure to commemorate that story.
With two ravens and a badass lightning energy hammer as accessories, this is a super cool modern Thor Legends figure that makes for a super-cool updated version. Awesome!
The Marvel Legends Controller Build-A-Figure Series is now up for order and is scheduled to ship out later in 2022. I would expect Speedball to be the “hot” single-packed figure in this wave, but maybe I’m just being delusional. Either way, I’m reserving mine ASAP.
What do you think of this widely-varied wave of 6” figures, Marvel collectors? What are your must-haves (and will-skips!) of this set, and do you think The Controller works as a legit lure to sell the whole series?
Been hoping they’d make a Blue Marvel figure someday, so I’m super excited for that. Probably gonna grab Speedball and Quake too.
Speedball, Blue Marvel, and the retro Iron Man for me. Maybe USAgent, if he goes on sale. No interest in the BAF or the rest.
I like waves I can cherry-pick! It’s almost nostalgic! 😉
Speedball’s costume actually has that pattern, so they didn’t do ANYTHING for his power effect! I’m pretty disappointed, especially after Vulcan(!) didn’t get anything. He’s just a figure with no powers!
Love love love that Thor and a new classic comic USAgent has been on my want list for quite some time! And Quake/Hill would go nice with the classic Nick Fury from a few years back too
The price hikes are terrible, and I thought I’d be buying less! I feel like Hasbro is scalping me, with the price of Rhino at $38.99. YIKES! But I conceded, and ordered a Rhino,
I ordered Blue Marvel, from my Avengers Alliance FB game playing days, Speedball to near completion of the New Warriors team, Madame Hydra to bolster my ranks with the lonely Red Skull, Quakke, more for a Shield Agent Maria Hill, and USAgent to round out my Force Works team, even though he used a different costume then. I skipped on the Iron Man and Thor, as I have the ultimate versions of those characters, already. Definitely a great wave that hit my wallet hard!
The new Madam Hydra is a pass. I’m happy with the old one. Once again Marvel Legends designers have absolutely no clue on how a belt is strapped. Just look at your own belt. The tip of the belt points AWAY from the metal prong.
I’m waiting for a new Baron von Strucker.
Oh good more recycled legends to form a baf with a new bead. Ill just buy the heads and spray my thanos blue.
The “Epic Heroes” line NEVER came to my town in 2013, and I patiently waited for the best chance to but a decent-priced US Agent. I’m interested in checking out this wave (assuming it actually shows up).
You know what Speedball is really missing…NIELS THE CAT!
Looking forward to this version of Thor and Iron Man, but also Blue Marvel.
Looking at probably skipping all the figures and just buying the BAF. Yet another instance where I’m all about the classics, even ones that seem obscure to you young-un’s from the 90’s and barely know who the more recent figures are. Yes, to me, Speedball is a recent character. LOL I’ll take Controller and D’Spayre and… whatever other guys that appeared like… twice… in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Love that stuff.
Pretty hyped for this wave. Feel like the inclusion of Madame Hydra makes sense with the characters appearance in TFATWS. Happy to get a Quake, and I’ll be buying two for sure with the Maria head included. The BAF might become a quick hand me down to one of my nieces or nephews lol.
How’d I miss Madame Hydra in Winter Falcon? Who was she?
