If there hadn’t been an ongoing global pandemic, New York Toy Fair 2022 would have gone on as expected over last weekend. But there is, and it didn’t. Even so, Diamond Select Toys launched a quartet of new headliner Marvel collectibles last week—including the long-requested Marvel Select Vision figure, as well as Skottie Young Marvel Animated Winter Soldier and Marvel Gallery Beta Ray Bill & Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness PVC Statues!
As one of the most powerful members of the movie Avengers and a character with significant ties to many storylines in the MCU, collectors have long been asking DST for a Marvel Select Vision figure. And after years of requests, Diamond Select Toys finally has Vision on the way… in classic comic book style! This may not be quite what fans were asking for, but is it any good…?
With DST opening orders for their first ever Marvel Select Scarlet Witch last year, it’s not that stunning to see a Vision Select flying in this year to join her. But what is unexpected to many is that this isn’t a matching MCU Vision at all—it’s an all-classic comic book variety instead!
Omitting pink entirely as well as even the barest Paul Bettany likeness, instead we get Viz in his recognizable red, yellow and green color scheme.
A photo leaked alongside the solicitation for this figure showing loads of accessories, but DST is not confirming which will actually come with this 7” Vision figure just yet. If specific details about the extras have you on the fence about pre-ordering, you’ll have to hang in there just a bit longer for official confirmation.
Meanwhile, we also get a new addition to the long-running “Marvel Babies” (AKA Marvel Animated statues) line inspired by the Skottie Young artwork designs: the Winter Soldier. Seeing as how we got Sam Wilson Captain America last month, it does feel logical to get Bucky Barnes to complement him this month.
Winter Soldier is not the easiest character to make a cutesy, cartoony version of—but I think this mini statue based off the Skottie Young variant cover for Captain America #25 comes as close as I’ve seen. This is a rare depiction of Winter Soldier with neither a gun of any kind nor a shield—although the signature metal arm is present in neat “comic book” style. I think the marketing line that this is Bucky “running from his past” is a stretch, but like all Skottie Young Marvel animated statues, this will be a pickup for me.
On the PVC front, DST is surprisingly launching two never-before-seen Marvel Gallery statues! First up is a Marvel Gallery Beta Ray Bill, giving a character infrequently captured outside of action figures his first statue since the Bowen Designs days!
A big, bulky 10” unique sculpted PVC figure of Thor’s trusted ally for 50 bucks is wildly cheap, even if the cloud base is rather simplistic and I’m rarely impressed with the paint quality on PVCs. A fun and interesting choice by Diamond Select Toys!
Finally, we have the movie-based Marvel Gallery Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness statue. There hasn’t been a new MCU Gallery statue release in a while, so this came out of left field a bit.
Sculpted by Gentle Giant Studios, this is a diorama scene of Dr. Strange stepping out of a teleportation ring portal.
The painted resin prototype for this looks amazing, and with a $50 MSRP I think this may be one of DST’s most-ordered pieces of 2022. I don’t buy many DST Gallery figures anymore, but this one is super impressive and has my attention.
The Marvel Select Vision, Animated Winter Soldier and Gallery Doctor Strange/Beta Ray Bill are all up for pre-order now and expected to arrive in summer 2022. A lot of DST Marvel Select figures have been fast sellers and ended up tough to get during the pandemic, so be sure to reserve a Vision if you’re sure you want one. The three statues should all be available for a longer duration, although Skottie Young Bucky is limited to 3000 pieces and the Doctor Strange PVC may get wiped out fast if the movie is a hit.
Are any of these new solicits by Diamond Select Toys to your tastes, Marvel collectors? Which, if any, are you thinking of adding to your collection?
Marvel Gallery Doctor Strange is a must have – put a LCD light under and behind it and see how that ring glows.
