NYCC 2019: Sideshow Cyclops Premium Format Figure Statue Revealed!

Literally the moment that Sideshow Collectibles unveiled their new X-Men statues of Gambit and Colossus in the build to San Diego Comic Con 2019, collectors began speculating (and demanding) that a new Sideshow Cyclops Premium Format Figure debut at New York Comic Con 2019 this year. Well, NYCC 2019 has arrived–and so has the Sideshow Premium Format Cyclops Statue that goes up for order later this month! Early buzz online has been surprisingly negative based off leaked photos, but how does he actually look in-person…?

I cannot tell a lie: when I saw the first low-res, leaked images of the new Cyclops PF Statue, my heart immediately dropped a bit. Sharp criticism from high-end collectors immediately cropped up on social media, and it’s a bit daunting (okay, impossible) to find anyone giving the overflowing praise that we saw for Gambit in July.

Even so, I desperately want a 1/4 Statue for my collection that doesn’t cost me $1000 like the new XM Studios one, so getting as good a look at (and as many photos as possible of) this Cyke Statue was one of my prime directives at NYCC 2019 this Thursday. Do I feel better now…?

Well… sort of yes, and sort of no. As sharp-eyed collectors immediately noticed, this Cyclops is in fact in almost the exact same pose as the most recent Premium Format Wolverine Statue, which is going to look awkward on display and is hard to get past.

I know there’s a new Brown Costume Wolverine PFF in the works, and I sort of think SS should have shown that one off with Cyke so collectors would see that they’ll have options.

Being in the iconic Jim Lee costume, a lot of fans immediately noted the similarities between this 1:4 resin statue and the Kotobukiya 1:10 ARTFX+ PVC figure.

Well, while it’s easy to Photoshop that duo and make them look comparable from home, there’s no comparison in-person–the level of detail on the PF Cyclops figure is vastly superior to the little PVC (as it absolutely should be, given the price and scale).

The snowy terrain base on this 17″ resin statue matches the base on Jean Grey, which makes logical sense and is fine by me.

I think the snowy deco on Slim’s boots makes them look less freshly store-bought, and I think folks will feel better about the wintery bases once we’ve seen a couple more statues using them (like the next Logan!). And hey–the scorched Earth on this base is really pretty sweet.

Overall, my mind is not blown into a euphoric haze by this piece, but I do like the look of it a lot more now that I’ve seen it in-person, and I’m thinking that it will fill the quarter-scale Cyclops void in my life just fine for under 600 bucks–a little bit more than half of what it would end up costing me to import the upcoming XM Studios version.

The Sideshow Exclusive Cyclops Premium Format Statue will go up for order on October 17th, and will include three interchangeable visors and two interchangeable heads (which have not been shown just yet). More info on those to follow once they’re revealed (most likely on October 15th).

Cyclops was easily the single most-anticipated member remaining to be done in the new X-Men Premium Format Figure series of statues–now that you’ve seen him, what do you think, Marvel collectors? Are you satisfied with what Sideshow has done, or do you think they missed the spot with this new Scott Summers figure?

  1. Horrible. I waited years for a new Cyclops and I felt SS was going to smash this outta the park. But I was wrong. Really wrong. XM’s Cyclops annihilates this piece. There are a ton of different versions of Cyclops, why do we have to only use Jim Lee’s version? SS came across as cowards to me when I witnessed this statue. I thought SS was going to do something special and they presented this. Weak, bland and lazy. These other visors better be incredible because I don’t want to pay $1200 for XM’s. They knew people have extremely high hopes for their Cyclops and they did not deliver. Thanks for writing statue reviews, I always read them.
