The most-anticipated series of every year for a large contingent of Marvel Legends collectors is the annual X-Men Legends series, and while we’ve got some offshoot waves coming later in the year, the core wave has begun arriving! While this is another stacked series, the 2019 X-Men Legends Build-A-Figure is a little… less… demanded than the majority of the wave. The Marvel Legends Caliban BAF can already be found for around just 50 bucks online… but is he comparatively cheap because he’s bad, or just in low demand…?
Hasbro must have felt a bit differently, however, or else we wouldn’t be getting the mutant tracker-turned-Horseman in a precious Marvel Legends Build-A-Figure slot! Is this figure worthy of the honor? Here’s my review…
While I’ve already confessed that Caliban as a character is one of the X-team members I least wanted an action figure of, I can’t deny that he has excellent synergy with some of last year’s key releases. His rival, Sabretooth, got a wonderful ML figure of his own in 2018, and Caliban looks natural posed with the Apocalypse BAF or fellow Four Horseman Archangel. If ever there was a “right” time to do a Caliban Legends figure, this was it.
My favorite component of this figure is unquestionably the head sculpt. The head is just outstandingly awesome with its irate, open-mouthed “roar” and has loads of built-in personality. The grayish white plastic with a dark grey paint wash on parts of it looks perfect, giving Caliban’s head a shadowed and grimy feel.
And the shape of Caliban’s horned white head definitely makes my mind call back to a certain Game of Thrones character with a white head and horns—and anything that evokes Game of Thrones in my mind always gets a thumbs up!
Caliban’s body is about 8” tall overall, and has the same feeling of bulk and musculature that the Space Knight Venom from a few years ago did. The proportions feel very accurate to the comic books, and I’ve got no complaints about this body mold at all for Big Cal.
I’m also really psyched with how well-done the hands on this figure are. The add-on wrist bracelets fit wonderfully snug, and the inhuman, spindly claw-like fingers have the same detailed coloration as the head does. The hands look intimidatingly dangerous.
For articulation lovers, Caliban has nearly as much super-articulation as most folks would ask for:
- Double-Hinged Knees
- Hinged Ankles with Rockers
- Swivel-Hinge Wrists
- Hinge Elbows
- Ball-Hinge Neck and Shoulders
- Ball Hips
- Swivel Thighs/Calves/Waist/Biceps
- Upper Torso Ab Crunch
The single-hinged Elbows with no swivel or ball-joint are a bummer, but otherwise I’m content with the articulation scheme on this big guy. He’s heavy enough to hold up other figures with ease, and can pull off a good number of powerhouse poses.
What’s not so swell about this Marvel Legends Caliban Build-A-Figure? Not much! But here’s my bullet point nitpicks:
My biggest gripe with this figure is the pearlescent silvery-white paint chosen as a primary color for the Caliban BAF costume. The sparkly paint feels really out of paint on this monstrous powerhouse, and I never felt like Caliban had a pearlescent looking outfit in the comics. I think matte white with a wash would have been a less jarring selection. I do dig the matte maroon on his costume, though!
For whatever reason, there are also a few sculpted “veins” running down the front of Caliban’s crotch. As you might imagine, these look a little, well… strange.
While the plastic quality overall is better on the Caliban BAF than on many figures we’ve seen lately, the joints in his elbows and knees still feel a bit loose and wobbly to the touch. Curiously enough, all of the other joints on mine feel nice and solid, however.
Speaking of QC: the paint team did a bang-up job on the paint applications on the front of my Caliban figure… but botched the sides of the shoulders and the design on his back with some sloppy paint. The paint looks good overall, but if you’re OCD about paint apps, keep your eyes on the Caliban BAF parts for paint flaws.
Overall: While I’m not exactly enthusiastic about the choice of a Caliban Build-A-Figure for this year’s X-Men Legends Wave, I can’t fault Hasbro for doing a killer job with him. I don’t love the pearlescent paint on Caliban’s body or a few minor QC issues he has, but the bulky proportions, vicious head sculpt and intimidating claw-like fingers are all right on-target. This is a fantastic figure that will complement previous X-Men Legends really well—it just happens to be of a character that has relatively little in the way of demand and fanfare.
I’m a 90’s comic reader, and quit reading comics in the late 90’s. I can’t remember if I read about Caliban in the comics, then, but I do remember him being on a Marvel card and I read his bio/history. So, I do know this character, but I wasn’t too excited to get him. I have 5 of the 7 figures from this wave now, as I have skipped Skullbuster and Weapon X. So I only need the right arm and right leg to complete Caliban. I haven’t collected long, but Caliban’s torso is REALLY hollowed out. He seems awfully light to me, for such a big figure. I can’t, but it feels like I could squeeze the torso really hard between my thumb and fingers, and it would crack.
Overall, it’s a nice fig, and I’ll probably pick up the other two to complete him, as it’s nice to have characters from the comics that I read in the 90’s. I like a lot of the modern characters, too, but the nostalgic factor is pretty biased for that 90’s era.
I agree, the torso seems light and hollow and as you said feels like it could crack or break into pieces at any minute if you drop it the wrong way….. I have the whole set and I wish he had the same feel as beast or the Walgreens exclusive thing from Fantasic 4, I’m not disappointed at all, I like the BAF because I had the original toy growing up, the one where his jaw moved by squeezing the legs and he had a cape that had a hood attached to it, I wish this figure also had that but I’m being very picky, I am very happy with this whole line!!
It looks like a perfectly fine figure of this version of Caliban… for those people who are even remotely interested. The last Caliban I read was when he was still a skinny Morlock. Before the disaster of 90’s comics descended on the world. I would buy a figure of that original version without hesitation. It would have cooler details anyway in both the skin and fabrics. I hope this figure pleases some people out there though. I do like that they keep finding ways of making figures of obscure or unexpected characters. I don’t want them to stop, so I hope these odd choices sell decently.
Nothing about the 90s was a disaster. The 2000s however have been utter garbage. See; Carol Danver, Miles Morales and Disney owning Marvel.
The character choice doesn’t bother me at all because I would rather they use less important characters for the BAFs. No one should have to pay $120 to get an important character.
The buck used for Caliban seemed too big to me so I checked the wiki. He should be about 6′ 8″
Caliban has mutated several times, though, so it’s hard to peg down a height for him—especially since artists just drew him whatever the heck size they felt like. Sometimes he’s drawn as big as if he were the Hulk or something, and there’s are panels where he’s standing around and Domino only goes up to his waist. I think this is an instance where the size Hasbro went with is just fine, since this is Caliban’s most powerful Apocalypse-fueled form.
Read X-Men “X-Cutioner’s Song” TPB. This size totally works for him. Also it’s the best X-Men graphic novel ever. From back when X-Force was still X-Force and not just a bunch of X-Men usurping the group’s name.
Good review as always. As someone who tuned out on the x-men during the 90s, neither his BAF nor most of the figures from this wave represent characters i have any attachment too, but there’s no denying that its a wave full of cool looking figures. Happy for 90s X-fans! My game plan is still to buy Beast as soon as i find him, then wait and grab whichever characters from this wave end up pegwarming and being discounted. (if any) From what i can tell, Beast, Weapon X and Jubes are all hot sellers, not sure how the rest are doing but the 1 case i saw at my local WM sold within a couple of days)
As far as Caliban being relatively cheap on ebay this early on, I suppose its sort of the reverse of the Kingpin wave, where the characters in the wave are in high demand but the BAF isn’t a hugely popular character (although again, the figure itself looks good). So i can see a lot of people trying to recoup the cost of buying their favorite characters from the wave by unloading the BAF on ebay.
I remember this rendition of CALIBAN and I like it. I always thought it was cool that APOCALYPSE took such a weak character, fueled by rage over the massacre of his people, and made him a giant killing machine. Don’t get me wrong…I liked meak CALIBAN but this is a great figure. He looks awesome standing beside APOCALYPSE. I’m loving this resurgence in X-men figures. They were definitely missed!
Easy grab for me. Like @Jimmy C, I too used to own the 90’s Toy Biz toy version so I was very excited to see that Hasbro basically remade that version in the ML wave. That’s another 90’s Toybiz conversion I can safely scratch off my wishlist.
