Sideshow Premium Format Thor Modern Statue Up for Order!

With Marvel hype reaching a fervor pitch with this week’s release of the Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie in theaters, Sideshow Collectibles is aiming to capitalize from a totally different angle–that of Cap’s Avengers comrade, Thor! Not only is the very cool Thor Frog going up this week, but the Sideshow exclusive edition of their all-new Premium Format Thor Modern Age statue is now available for order! Ever wanted a statue of Thor wielding a sword…? Well, now you can have one…

Seeing as how the original Sideshow Collectibles Thor Premium Format Figure sells for $800-$1400 on the aftermarket these days, Sideshow seems to have decided (correctly) that the collecting world was ready for a new comics-based Premium Format Figure Thor statue.

This time, Sideshow has opted for a Thor Modern Age Premium Format Figure statue, depicting Thor in the costume he wore after J. Michael Straczynski returned Thor and Asgard to the Marvel Universe way back in 2008 (man, time flies!).

In order to be authentic to the JMS Thor comic books, this new 2014 Thor Premium Format Statue features Thor with a totally clean-shaven look. I know some people prefer scruffy, bearded Thor, but that just wouldn’t be an accurate portrayal of the Thor that Sideshow Collectibles is trying to capture here.

As you would (and should) expect at the quarter-scale size, the detailing on Thor’s hammer is beautifully done, with the famous words etched into the stone of Mjolnir.

I like the exotic Asgardiam rubble base that the Modern Thor Premium Format Figure is perched upon. While it doesn’t blow me away as some bases have in the past, it is a good-looking and appropriate complement to this Thor statue.

This particular Thor costume is the one that Oliver Coipel designed and which Hasbro included in the revived Marvel Legends Series 1 set back in 2012. I don’t always like soft goods on my statues, but in this instance Thor’s fabric tunic looks exceptionally well-done. The execution of Thor’s flowing red cape is also downright fantastic.

I’ve always considered Thor to be a real winner with the ladies and a bit of a pretty-boy, so I’m not entirely convinced by the interpretation of Thor’s face on this Sideshow Premium Format Thor Modern Age statue.

The other thing about this Sideshow Modern Thor Premium Format Figure that’s keeping my credit card firmly holstered in my wallet (at least, for now) is the price-tag on the piece. $439.99 is a pretty hefty sum for a statue–even a quarter-scale statue–and as much as I like Thor, I don’t know that this particular Premium Format Figure Thor Modern Age statue is worth $440 to me.

Sideshow Collectibles will be selling an extra-limited Premium Format Thor Exclusive Edition of the statue that will include a bonus item at no additional cost: the Odinsword, Ragnarok!

Though the Odinsword has been around since the Journey into Mystery days of the 1960’s, it’s best known today for its key role in the (awful) mega-story, “Fear Itself”. I don’t have any real burning desire to own a statue of sword-wielding Thor, but if I was going to purchase this statue, I’d definitely want the free alternate Odinsword Ragnarok weapon.

The Sideshow exclusive edition Modern Age Thor Premium Format Figure statue will go up for pre-order on Thursday afternoon, April 3rd. I’ll send out an alert via the Marvel Toy News Facebook page once Thor goes up for order, although I expect the Premium Format Thor Exclusive Edition to take a couple weeks to sell out.
