Of all the news articles that I published following San Diego Comic-Con 2015, the one that most surprised me the most regarding the sheer amount of hype and excitement that it drummed up was the preview of the Gentle Giant Skottie Young Marvel Babies statues. Gentle Giant said at the show that we’d have to wait a while to own these mini-statues–and they were telling the truth–but at least the Skottie Young Captain America statue is now up for order!
Skottie Young Thanos, Iron Man and Captain America statues were all showcased at SDCC, but Gentle Giant Ltd. said that Captain America would be leading the charge and kicking off the new line of statues at a price point of $55-$70. And true to their word, the Captain America Skottie Young statue is in fact first up, and coming our way with a price-point of $64.99!
Now, $65 for a statue that’s just 4.5″ tall may sound a mite high but it’s important to take into consideration that Sideshow is now charging $450-$500 for their quarter-scale statues (around 18″ tall). So this little Cap–which is a 100% uniquely tooled resin statue–will be about a quarter of the size of Sideshow’s Premium Format figures for about an eighth of the price. I don’t think that that’s too bad at all from the viewpoint.
The bad news is that we’re going to have to wait a long time to welcome Baby Captain America into our homes (and our collections): the estimated release date for the Captain America Baby statue isn’t until Q3 2016 (July-September 2015). Having to potentially wait an entire year to own this cute little Cap is definitely going to be agonizing, but hopefully the wait will make it all the sweeter when the characters from this lineup do start arriving.
The Gentle Giant Marvel Comics Characters Captain America statue is now available for pre-order, and estimated to ship in summer 2016 (sigh). I’ve never known Gentle Giant to ship out products early, so I don’t there’s much chance of seeing this piece arrive before Q3 2016 (sadly). There’s no set edition size for this Captain America, but Gentle Giant Marvel statues tend to have fairly low edition sizes (usually under 1000 pieces), so I would not be surprised at all to see this first entry in a sure-to-be ultra-popular line sell out well before it actually ships out.
Now that the Marvel Comics Character Statues line of Skottie Young-inspired characters is finally on the way, apwhat are your thoughts on the line, Marvel collectors? Are you interested in collecting Cap (or the entire line), or are $60+ 4.5″ statues too rich for your blood? Do you think Gentle Giant has their next major hit on their hands with this concept?
