The Cavalry has arrived!! Heading into New York Toy Fair 2015 this weekend, I didn’t have a lot of hope for seeing many new Marvel POP! Vinyls, as Funko just revealed eight Funko Avengers Age of Ultron POP Vinyls last month. And on my first visit to the Funko booth at NY Toy Fair 2015, the only new item I saw was the Deadpool Chimichanga Truck. But once I flipped through the catalog at my hotel, I realized one more new Marvel POP! was at the show: the Funko Melinda May from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.!

Plenty of Marvel fans wrote off the Agents of SHIELD TV series as trash after the first handful of episodes and refused to watch more. Even so, one original character from that series has risen to near pop culture phenomenon status and the subject of memes across the Internet despite the initial unpopularity of the show: Agent Melinda May.

And so, while I’m still pining away for the first toy representations of the quirky scientist duo of SHIELD, Fitz/Simmons, I can totally understand why if Funko were only going to allocate one spot for a new Agents of SHIELD POP! Vinyls figure this year, it had to be Melinda May.

Merchandisers are pretty wary of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., so this Agent Melinda May Funko POP Vinyls figure is the very first toy to be produced of any of the original characters from that TV Series.

Diamond Select Toys and Funko have both previously released Agent Phil Coulson figures, however, and a Hasbro Marvel Legends Agent Coulson figure is scheduled for release at Toys R Us stores this winter. Funko also has an Agent Coulson with Lola POP Rides set scheduled for this year, though it hasn’t been revealed yet.

Hopefully May kicks as much butt at retail as she does in the show, as maybe then Funko (and other manufacturers) will dive in with the full Agents of SHIELD team in figure form.

The Funko POP Vinyls Melinda May figure should be up for order later this winter, and is scheduled for release in May 2015.
