So I woke up this morning, picked up my phone to see what was new in the (toy) world, and immediately got bombarded with messages from people griping about Toys R Us raising the price of their exclusive Marvel Legends All-New X-Men figures set. I went to the Toys R Us website, and saw that sure enough, Toys R Us has now raised the price on the set to $139.99. Then I rolled my eyes and laughed. But not a good kind of laugh…
But apparently, not to Toys R Us.
This week, Toys R Us has now upped their exclusive Marvel Legends All-New X-Men box set pre-order price to $139.99. Yes, that’s $28 per figure for these repaints. Consider the extra $3 an “exclusive fee” on top of Toys R Us’ already outrageous ~$25 MSRP on regular Marvel Legends figures. As you may imagine, I was not impressed.
This isn’t my first rodeo with Toys R Us exclusives (nor is it for most of you, I’m sure), but it is rather frustrating to see Toys R Us essentially scalping their own exclusive to this extent. There’s a couple silver linings here. First, only the dumbest scalper would pick up this at the new inflated price–the Original X-Men Marvel Legends 2014 set should be pretty easy to find at retail.
Secondly, slow sales (and mark my words, this set will have slow sales) almost always lead to 40% off sales on large Toys R Us exclusives like this. In fact, you might say that this set was intended to sell for 40% off, as with that discount the All-New X-Men Marvel Legends 2014 exclusive set ends up costing $84–the original announced price. So I might be the last person on my block to own this set, but I’ve set the target price in my mind now–~$85. We’ll have to wait and see exactly how long I have to wait to pay that price, but I’m all but certain that it will happen by late spring.
It’s also worth noting that based upon the updated pre-order page, the All-New X-Men Marvel Legends 2014 figures set has been delayed until March 19, 2014–almost two months after the original February 1, 2014 date Toys R Us told everyone last week. So not only will fans have to pay almost 65% more than Toys R Us originally said for this set, they’ll have to wait a month and a half longer to do so.
Alright, Marvel Legends fans, let’s hear it: How do you feel about Toys R Us and their Marvel Legends All-New X-Men set shenanigans? Are you on-board with Toys R Us for paying $140 for a set of figures that’s mostly repaints, or will you be waiting for a deep price-cut to pick this set up?
if thats the price as much as i want this imma pass
It really irks me to see this. I was excited about this set but seen price and was immediately disappointed. These figures don’t even come with BAF pieces like regular Legends figures. Unless TRU drops price they won’t be selling that to me. It had been removed again all day today so maybe they’re fixing price.
I couldn’t find this on the Toys R Us website. Was it taken down or is it from a different country?
Toys R Us took it off the website–hopefully because they realized they were out of their gourds with their pricing on the set.
Such a huge price for a line that seems to have one piece of new tooling (Jean Grey’s head).
This new price is ridiculous for a 5 figure set regardless of being an exclusive. On the plus side this price may keep scalpels away.
As of 7:30 a.m. this morning, Wednesday, Feb. 5th, Toys R Us had the Marvel Legends X-Men 5 figure set available for pre-order for $89.99. That’s a decent enough price and much better than $140. I pre-ordered one; much better to have it than to worry about finding it in unreliable Toys R Us stores or to wade through unjust scalpers’ prices. Hope you can still order it. It delivers in mid March and is free shipping to the house b/c it’s over $75. Good luck!
