Sometimes Diamond Select Toys is very successful at keeping a secret, and sometimes they’re foiled by their own packaging materials! Though the Disney Store exclusive Marvel Select Superior Spider-Man figure was meant to be kept top-secret until Disney was ready to announce it, a photo of the figure was in the pamphlet that came with the most recent Marvel Select action figures. But even though the surprise was ruined, I’m still enthusiastic about this figure. The Marvel Select Superior Spider-Man figure is now officially announced and available for order!

While there’s been plenty of griping and hate for Dan Slott’s “The Superior Spider-Man” comic book series, that hasn’t stopped the book from selling like gangbusters and being one of Marvel’s best-selling comic books for the past year.

While many fans hated the idea of Doc Ock’s consciousness controlling Peter Parker’s body as Spider-Man, close to 100,000 fans buying each issue seemed to like the idea just fine!

And thus, the Disney Store wisely chose a modern Superior Spider-Man Marvel Select figure as one of their latest batch of Disney Store exclusives from Diamond Select Toys (as officially announced today). The Marvel Select Winter Soldier figure was released in December, and there are expected to be two more Disney Store exclusives announced in the near-future.

As action figures require a long period of development and production time, this figure represents the Superior Spider-Man costume from the first part of the Superior Spiderman comic book series and not the current costume being worn by “SpOck” (as fans have endearingly nicknamed the Spider-Man/Doc Ock conglomerate). The Diamond Select Toys Superior Spider-Man figure features the Marvel Select standard 16 points of articulation.

My favorite part of this Marvel Select figure isn’t even the 7″ Superior Spider-Man action figure itself, though–it’s the base! You get to see a fallen Speed Demon, as well as pieces of Boomerang and the Beetle–all stars of the outstanding “Superior Foes of Spider-Man” comic book series. If you haven’t given that book a try, I highly recommend it–it’s far better than you’d expect any book with the most recognizable character in it being the Shocker to be.

I am a Spidey freak, so I went ahead and ordered a Superior Spidey for myself. I’ll post photos and a review once mine arrives in the next week or so.
