I don’t typically report on ebay auctions, but sometimes something gets posted that makes me really sit up and take notice. Such was the case with the unpackaged sample of the Marvel Legends Phoenix Five Cyclops figure that was posted earlier in the year, and even more so in the case of the latest Marvel Legends holy grail of all holy grails to make its appearance online: a packaged sample of the canceled Wolverine Marvel Legends Rogue figure has turned up for sale online! But if you want this Rogue prototype, you’re going to have to be prepared to shell out at least the cost of three or four Premium Format statues…
I had no doubt that the auction for the Wolverine Legends Rogue figure was going to go for an astronomical price even beyond that of the Phoenix Force Cyclops Marvel Legends figure that sold for $1,238 in the spring, and the price quickly escalated beyond that and has hit $1,500 as of writing. I have a hunch that this auction hasn’t hit its final bid yet, though–I’d expect the auction to close in the $1700-$2000 range (though perhaps there’s somebody filthy rich out there that I’m underestimating)!
I live about an hour away from The Time Capsule store in Cranston, Rhode Island, so I can confirm that it is in fact a real and reputable store and that this is a genuine item and not a fake or a bootleg.
How the seller got their hands on one of the only Marvel Legends Rogue Puck Build-A-Figure Series samples in existence doesn’t exactly take a brain surgeon to figure out, seeing as how Hasbro headquarters is a short jaunt away in Providence, Rhode Island (Flash fact: Touring Hasbro headquarters in 2007 is one of the high points of my life).
Even so, the very possibility that this Hasbro 6″ Rogue figure could end up being produced some day disqualifies it from my consideration for spending $1500+ on it (even if I had that much spare money–which I absolutely don’t).
If you do happen to win this unproduced Marvel Legends Rogue figure auction, however, take heart–even if this Rogue figure is eventually produced, it definitely won’t be in this packaging (small comfort, right?)!
The auction for the canceled Rogue Marvel Legends prototype ends September 11th 2014 at about 4:19 EST. There is a very real possibility that this will be the only carded sample that ever surfaces for this figure, so if this canceled Rogue figure is something you feel like you can’t live without having in your collection, now is your time (but not my time, because I just don’t have $1500+ lying around).
Anyone out there planning to take their chances and increase the bid on this already exorbitantly priced, potentially one-of-a-kind collectible? Or is this Wolverine Legends Rogue action figure just way, way too rich for your blood for you to even consider it?
im so excited to see this come out I was so bummed when they canceled it back in 2013 so im elated for the final release
Man! This was one of the only two figures I was looking forward to from the wave, then it got cancelled. I hope this design still gets released in the future (though I fear the costume might be considered ‘out-dated’ by then).. Here’s to hoping!
