Despite consisting entirely of fairly obscure characters, the Guardians of the Galaxy have managed to land themselves a starring role in a huge summer blockbuster (I hope) coming to theaters in August 2014. It’s been rumored that LEGO might take advantage of the hype surrounding the GOTG with a LEGO Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy theme, and it’s now confirmed that the rumors are true! Coming Summer 2014–LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy sets!
I think that this much retail support from LEGO for Guardians of the Galaxy has to be considered a pretty humongous surprise. LEGO didn’t release a single Thor: The Dark World set to coincide with that movie, and only has one unrelated LEGO Captain America set coming out this winter alongside the Captain America: The Winter Soldier film. I suppose with the upcoming movie and appearances of all the Guardians of the Galaxy team members in the LEGO Marvel video game, LEGO figured that there was enough support for GOTG sets to sell like crazy.
The LEGO 76019 Guardians of the Galaxy set looks to be a small, value-priced set (probably with an MSRP of around $11.99). Meanwhile, LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy 76020 should be a medium-sized set and Guardians of the Galaxy LEGO 76021 should be a large-sized set. It’s very tough to make any attempt at guessing the prices of sets we don’t know the contents of, but based on the concept art box size, I would guess $30-$40 for the LEGO 76020 and $50-$70 on LEGO 76021.
For LEGO to create three separate Guardians of the Galaxy toys SKUs (and likely at least one or two minifigure polybags as well), LEGO must have some seriously high expectations for the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. And considering that the GOTG movie will feature spaceships, Batista and a murderous talking raccoon, LEGO may well be right to invest heavily in the success of Guardians of the Galaxy.
I’ll post an update when more information on these Guardians of the Galaxy LEGO sets becomes available, and you can ‘Like’ Marvel Toy News on Facebook to have more news, photos and updates sent straight to your Facebook Newsfeed!
What do you think, Marvel collectors? Will the Guardians of the Galaxy LEGO Marvel sets be a hit, or do you think LEGO may have made a bad call with all of their support for the movie?
