Marvel Legends Vintage Series Hi-Res Photos! Black Widow!

While we saw various bits and pieces at SDCC 2017 from a number of rumored Marvel Legends series, Hasbro brought one series to Comic-Con that no one was expecting–and it just so happens to be the one series they showed in its entirety! It’s a one-off series for now, but if it’s popular it could become something more: the Marvel  Legends Vintage Series, featuring Black Widow, Pizza Spider-Man, Brown Costume Wolverine and more!

Marvel Legends Vintage Series Captain America Figure

I collected the 5″ Toybiz Marvel Super Heroes figures throughout my adolescence, so I’ve got a special spot in my heart for the retro, nostalgia-inducing packaging that Hasbro is using for its latest new sub-series of 6″ Marvel Legends figures that debuted at San Diego Comic Con 2017 over the weekend.

Even if this wave is mostly composed of repaints and reissues, it’s definitely hitting me in my “can’t resist nostalgia” weak points!

The Vintage Marvel Legends series will contain the following six figures:

  • Captain America
  • Spider-Man
  • Punisher
  • Iron Man
  • Wolverine
  • Black Widow

Marvel Legends Vintage Series Black Widow FigureOf the six figures in this assortment, the only one that feel really new is the Vintage Black Widow, which gives us a classic Champions-era Black Widow costume.

This figure also feels a little weird because Toybiz never made a Black Widow figure in their Marvel Super-Heroes line that the retro packaging for this series is based off of. But hey–we’ve been desperately needing a new classic Black Widow 6″ action figure, so I’m sure not complaining!

SDCC 2017 Marvel Legends Vintage Wolverine 6 Inch FigureThe other figure in this series with no Toybiz Marvel Super Heroes counterpart is the Marvel Legends Vintage Wolverine figure. While there were plenty of Toybiz Wolverine figures released under the X-Men banner, he was never a part of the MSH line.

This figure actually improves a bit on the 2016 X-Men Legends Brown Costume Wolverine, as it adds an unmasked head, an empty mask, and even hair on Logan’s arms that wasn’t present last year! Those who skipped this figure last year may luck out–this looks to be a superior version.

Hasbro Vintage Marvel Legends Iron Man FigureSomewhat less exciting in this series are the Iron Man, Captain America and Punisher figures.

I talked a lot about the Vintage Iron Man figure over the weekend, as it’s not a favorite mold of mine at all, but I’m happy for those fans who wanted another crack at this comic-styled Iron Man (with new, slimmer boots!).

Vintage Captain America is pretty standard, but it’s good to have a comic book Cap available for those who don’t want one of the eleven-million readily available MCU Caps in stores. And hey–I’ll never get tired of that shield-throwing effects piece hand!

Marvel Legends Vintage Punisher 6 Inch FigureMost fans eventually ended up finding the Walgreens Punisher figure last year, but for those who wanted that figure and never found it–or who found it but wished it was slightly tweaked–the Hasbro Vintage Punisher figure fits the bill.

The original Toybiz Punisher was an eternal pegwarmer and haunted stores for many years, so seeing this figure in the new retro series definitely feels natural as can be.

Marvel Legends Spider-Man Vintage Series Figure

Finally, we’ve got a figure that I’ve a hunch will be one of the best sellers from this wave: Vintage Spider-Man! This is a basic re-release of the “Pizza Spider-Man” figure from several years back that was very popular and sells for several times its original price on eBay these days.

While I think this figure will fill a hole in many collectors’ collections and I’m glad to see it coming back, I’m disappointed Pizza Spidey comes with zero alternate hands. As packaged, he can web shoot with one hand and crawl with another, and never throw a punch. Excluding the  extra hands is a real downer in this case.

Marvel Legends Vintage Toybiz Packaging SeriesThe Retro Marvel Legends Toybiz Tribute series is scheduled to be released in Fall 2017, and should be up for order online at most retailers in the next couple months. I’ll post links here and to our social media pages as soon as the series goes live for orders.

Now that we’ve seen the whole series in hi-res form, how are you feeling about the Marvel Legends Vintage series? Would you like to see this theme continued, and if so, what characters would you like to see in the future?

Marvel Legends Vintage Series Hi-Res Photos! Black Widow! — 35 Comments

  1. Oh god.. fat head Cap, separate eyes widow, and bargain bin bucket-head man. The Punisher looks devilishly handsome though. Took a modeling side job to buy those expensive grenades I guess.

    • I’ll take back the derpy eyes Widow comment since not every figure is the same. Changing her name to Mary Jane in Widow cosplay.

      • Yeah I’m not happy that they reusing Mary Jane’s head for Black Widow, and I’m not happy that they’re using Silk’s head for Jewel…
At least they both oddball specialty figures outside the main line.
If they started reusing unmasked heads again in the main line, I’d be annoyed.

      • You’re far from the only one who holds an intense dislike of that Cap head. It’s ruined a couple of otherwise perfectly good Cap figures for me – I can buy it as the Ultimate Cap, but not 616 Steve Rogers. It’s nice that there’s such consistent continuity of headsculpt, but I wish they’d resculpt it.

        • Agreed 100%- great consistant head sculpt on the diffrent versions of cap- but the face itself sucks. Would definitely like a resculpted face.

        • Yea, that head sculpt….or maybe really even just the paint job with the eyebrows sticking out through the eye holes….it kinda ruims what could otherwise be a great Cap figure.
Though that color blue isn’t helping either.

        • That Cap and That Hawkeye figure (which is usually discounted deeper than other figures) are equally as bad.

  2. I’m unsure. I want that wolverine but already have mine from last year. Maybe I’ll give one to my brother.

  3. Super pumped for this line as well- but was hoping for a red suited Daredevil in that classic hard to find bright red costume, and venom. Really hoping these do well.

  4. Is the Black Widow’s head the one from TRU Two-Pack’s Mary Jane? This is the only figure i’m interested in, indeed. For the others, I got the previous versions and I rather save the money.

    • I made a side by side comparison of the Black Widow photo and my MJ figure. It appears to be the same head sculpt with some paint differences. Black Widow’s eye brows appear to be more arched more than MJ’s and no freckles on the cheeks.

  5. not a great sign when you have a series where over half the figures have “peg warmer” written all over them 🙁

  6. Spidey doesn’t look like he’ll be able to stand very well. Very bow-legged. Maybe his huge duck-like feet will help him achieve some stability.

  7. I am super exited for this classic widow and I would be just as exited for his cap IF they had sculpted his chain mail instead of printing it. I just don’t get why they can’t give us sculpted freaking chain mail. That mysterio had sculpted lines but I would be willing to bet the finished product of mysterio wont be sculpted either. Very disappointing.

    • Of course Mysterio will be sculpted.
      *eyeroll*

These vintage figures are NOT really designed to add new figures and sculpts to the main series of Marvel Legends.
They’re all about recreating classic ToyBiz figures and packaging for nostalgia.
Improved paint jobs and accessories are just a bonus.

This CapWolf figure was designed to be a new generic largeish body mold useable by all sorts of characters, not just Cap.

If they’re going to do a different Cap sculpt with scalemail, he’s going to be a main series figure, and he’ll probably be a resculpt of this CapWolf body.

  8. Btw, Dwight stall is a complete douche bag. I watch all the interviews done at the cons with him and he has a crappy disposition, I actually felt bad for shartimus last year which is hard to do. I wish there was someone else in charge of legends because he is not the reason for any of the sweet stuff we get, if anything all he has done is gives fans the opposite of what they want. If it wasn’t for the other passionate people on his team marvel legends would not be what they are today.

  9. How about a price point? If these are 10-15 each, then I’m sold on all of them except pizza spidey. Black widow is the dominant choice. That said if these go for standard price when they will be in cheaper packaging, come with no BAF part, and include limited accessories, then I’m sticking my middle finger up at the whole concept. Cheaper figures with nostalgia factor – cool / same price with less flair – screw dat! I’ll wait to hear the price before I get too excited.

      • If that is the case then I’m skipping them all. If legends cost 20 with a build-a-figure piece (a whole extra chunk of plastic with specific tooling, painting, and production costs) why would Hasbro assume it is okay to sell these figures with limited add-ons and cheaper, albeit “nostalgic” packaging? That seems like robbery to me. Don’t get me wrong, I think the figures are great choices for re-release (barring Black Widow which is a nice choice as a new addition), I like the paint apps, and I do dig the Toybiz packaging throw-back as I also collected during that era but I just don’t think it is right to sell single figures without a BAF piece or a high amount of accessories for the same price as standard legends. If they can get these to retail a few dollars lower I’ll be invested =)

  10. Wow, learned a lot from these hi-res pictures! I actually like this repainted version of Cap…didn’t notice the “scales” in the SDCC pics. He’s also painted a lighter blue than the previous version. I really like this.

I also hadn’t realized that Black Widow has MJ’s head sculpt….which I have to admit is probably a good cost-saving call on Hasbro’s part. It makes sense. I’m pretty certain that I’ll pick up this Black Widow over the motorcycle version (if not for any other reason than it will be less expensive).

Punisher I can definitely skip, having the Walgreens version. I don’t think he ever wore a red headband….strikes me as odd.

Iron Man looks pretty good to me, I realize there are a lot of valid criticisms of the previous version.

I feel like a sucker…but that Wolverine is likely to be bought by me, even though I have last year’s!! Another thing I didn’t notice in the lower res photos…they painted his arm hairs lol. I assume that that mask piece will fit between the neck and the unmasked head? That is really cool. I can justify having a masked Wolvie and unmasked Wolvie next to each other on the shelf, right?

Pizza Spidey…sad news for those who don’t have the previous version’s additonal hands.

I really love the idea of this Vintage series and hope that it continues! Honestly, the way that I collect ML figures is that I might decide on 2 or 3 from a wave and then I’m done. I don’t really need BAF pieces for figures I will never complete.

I hope that they do use this line to return more old figures to stores to give collectors a second chance. My personal picks for future waves are pretty selfish…in 2014 I wasn’t really collecting, and I would love a chance to pick up Carnage and Magneto.

    • I just grabbed a cheap loose Carnage off eBay.

But according to what Hasbro said at SDCC, next year we’re almost DEFINITELY getting one OR MORE symbiote waves.
They implied VERY VERY heavily that that would be the case, because next year is the 30th anniversary of Venom as a character, Marvel is about to do the Venomverse storyarc, AND Sony is about to do a standalone Venom movie.
Hasbro cited all three of those during their panel in response to a kid asking about getting symbiote waves. They were very VERY heavily hinting that we should expect a TON of symbiote figures next year.

So….I would definitely expect some version of Carnage to be among then.

      Magneto…. I don’t want a rerelease. It’s not a good figure.
We just need a totally NEW Magneto until they finally get it right.

  11. So this Cap comes with the flying shield effect. Fyi, Walmart online has marked down the Secret War Cap with the flying shield effect to only $3.97! (The 3.75″ Falcon with wings is also marked down to $3.97).

  12. Also, so we know if the unmasked Wolverine head fits on the Old Man Logan body?

  13. I’m confused, are these 3.75,5 or 6 inch figures? The packaging look to be the same as that amazon exclusive that’s now discounted.

  14. Really happy about the VNTG line. But instead of just re-releasing favorite characters that we all have, how about dedicating this line for hard to get figures? Red daredevil, ghost rider, pizza spidey and brown wolverine are all accounted for but who needs another Cap? Walgreens Punisher? Iron Man?? Or Black Widow (whos already in the new ghost rider wave)? How about Storm? She’s goes for over $200 on ebay!! Or archangel! If nothing than to take some of the thunder out of these scalpers.

  15. I’ll get both Widows (bike and retro) and probably end up head swapping the bike one onto the retro body.

I have the Wolvie from last year as well but the perfectionist in me wants a brown suit with the proper hairy arms..
