Hasbro Guardians of the Galaxy Figures 2-Packs – Toy Fair 2014

When Hasbro announced the lineup for the Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy figures assortment earlier this month, many collectors (including me) were bummed that the movie Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel Legends were limited to the five members of the team with zero villains or secondary characters. Well, Hasbro revealed a whole range of Guardians of the Galaxy 2.5″ figure two-packs at Toy Fair 2014 last week, andĀ if you want villains and ancillary characters, you’re in luck! But if you want high-quality, well-articulated figures of those characters–then you may be out of luck…

Everyone that was expecting Hasbro to debut their 3.75″ Marvel Universe-scale Guardians of the Galaxy action figures at the 2014 Toy Fair was in for a real surprise: there is no 3 3/4″ Guardians of the Galaxy figures line. Instead, Hasbro is jumping into a whole new scale for their Marvel action figures: 2.5″! At two-thirds the size of a standard Hasbro Marvel Universe action figure and the same height as the Funko Mystery Minis, this is a whole new frontier for Hasbro to tackle.

The five Guardians of the Galaxy Battle Gear 2.5″ Figures Two-Packs are:

Star Lord Chris Pratt Figure Hasbro Two Packs Assortment2.5″ Guardians of the Galaxy Star Lord (Peter Quill) & Gamora Figures

Gamora Hasbro Guardians of the Galaxy Two Packs FigureOf the 2.5″ GOTG two-packs, the Peter Quill Star Lord and Gamora two-pack is easily my favorite. These are not figures that are going to win any awards, mind you, but the Chris Pratt Star-Lord looks fairly cool (for a $3 toy) and Gamora comes out looking like a tough woman and not just some babe.

Guardians of the Galaxy BATTLE GEAR 2-PACK DRAX Figure2.5″ Guardians of the Galaxy Drax & Kortath Figures

Guardians of the Galaxy Korath Figure Hasbro 2014Despite being a secondary character, this Korath figure has the most detailed sculpting of any figure in the whole Hasbro Guardians of the Galaxy Battle Gear line. Drax has a passable resemblance to Batista, just as he should. Again, these 5 points-of-articulation figures are certainly not going to win any awards, but for 6 bucks per two-pack? They’re acceptable.

Groot Guardians of the Galaxy Figure Hasbro New York Toy Fair 2014GOTG Groot, Rocket Raccoon (with gun) and Sakaaran Warrior Figures 3-Pack

Hasbro Guardians of the Galaxy Rocket Raccoon Figure with BlasterThis is the first of two “three-packs”. The Rocket Raccoon figurines are totally unarticulated and might be better suited to being considered a pack-in than a figure of his own. Even so, he’s probably still going to cause more kids to buy the packs he’s in than any other figure in them.

Toy Fair 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy Sakarian FigureThe Sakaaran Warrior figure’s design looks very strange to me on this toy–I’ll be interested to see exactly what these soldiers look like in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Star Lord Hasbro Action FigureHasbro Guardians of the Galaxy Ronan & Star Lord Figures Two-Pack

Guardians of the Galaxy Ronan Action Figure HasbroThe paint deco on Star Lord’s mask is simply terrible on this prototype, but otherwise the masked Starlord figure doesn’t look all that bad. The movie Ronan design looks unexpectedly cool–movie Ronan is arguably a better design than his comic book iteration. I really, truly wish that Hasbro had a 6″ Marvel Legends Ronan figure in the works, but alas.

Guardians of the Galaxy Battle Gear Groot Hasbro Action FigureGOTG Groot, Rocket Raccon and Nova Corps Officer Action Figures

Finally, we’ve got another three-pack containing a slightly different Groot, a Rocket Raccoon without gun, and a Nova Corps Officer. This Rocket looks terrible and I’m apathetic toward the Groot with some sort of green substance (cosmic moss?) growing on him. The Nova Corps Officer figure is sort of neat, though I’m not sold on this interpretation of the Nova costume just yet.

Guardians of the Galaxy Nova Figure from Hasbro 2-PacksMy honest opinion on these? I think they’re kind of awful. Forgive me, but I’m spoiled by the quality 2″ Mega Bloks figures that I collect, which have ball-jointed hips and shoulders and are going to be getting even more articulated later this year. Those figures retail for the same cost of $3 each, and are truthfully better sculpted, painted and articulated than these 2.5″ Guardians of the Galaxy Hasbro figures. These aren’t a deplorable first attempt at smaller-scale figures, but Hasbro certainly has a ways to go.

Rocket Raccoon 2.5 Inch Figure Hasbro Guardians of the GalaxyAt 6 bucks per two-pack and just 30 dollars for the whole series, I may pick these up because they’re cheap and I expect to love the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but I’m really not excited about this 2.5″ Battle Gear line. Having the smaller scale in order to have smaller-scaled starships is a genius move, but these figures just aren’t up to snuff (in my opinion).

What are your opinions on this value-priced, small-sized range of Hasbro Guardians of the Galaxy Battle Gear two-packs, Marvel collectors? Anyone planning to dig in deep for this line?

  1. I am soooo siiick of hearing about this stupid movie. I HATE Guardians of the Galaxy. This is the biggest bunch of hokey bulls**t I’ve seen since Wendy and Marvin. This crap makes Hit Monkey look thought provoking. People! It’s a talking tree and a talking raccoon for f**k’s sake! These toy lines are just making it more obvious! Watch the trailer and tell me, in all seriousness, that you have any hope for this movie being anything but stupid jock humor. Star-Lord may as well be Seth Rogan! WTF? They wasted plastic on this and we still don’t have a Jubilee wave? What the actual f***, Hasbro?

      • Yeah, no it isn’t. Unless you mean Marvel Universe figures. In which case, your taste in scale sucks.

        • Taste in scale? lol. Collectors like you are why normal people fear meeting a toy collector. The 3.75″ is a lot more fun with vehicles and you can have way more figures for less money and less space used.

My 6″ figures are nicer and have more detail but they aren’t meant for a normal person that wants to have a legit Marvel Universe.

    • hey genius, grab a comic, leave reality for a while, and find out THAT THIS IS AS SERIOUS AS A SUPER SOLDIER SERIUM, A MAN MAKING FUTURE TECHNOLIGY ROBOT SUITS WHICH HE WONT GIVE TO THE GOVERMENT, AND A MAN THAT TURNS GREEN WHEN HE IS MAD????????????????. THERY’RE COMICS, WHO KNOWS, SOMEONE COULD MAKE A DUCK A SOLO HERO……… OH YEAH FREAKING “HOWARD THE DUCK”. OH, AND WHAT ABOUT SQUIRREL GIRL! WELL IF YOU FOUND OUT THAT EVERYBODY ELSE LIKES THE GUARDIANS. THEY MIGHT BE WORTH SOMTHING. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOUR FACE AFTER YOU HOW MUCH MONEY THIS MAKES

  2. WOW they are shit, complete waste of plastic. Hasbro is pissing me off so bad lately they ruined amazing spider-man 2 figures and the star wars mission series is shit too. Nobody wants this garbage we quality not shit.

  3. Movie trailer was weak… new Hasbro line isnt much better. Why go to a smaller scale? Do they have any clue to what collectors and children want. WTF

  4. In comparison to the Playskool Heroes or Imaginext figures that go for $3-3.50 each, these GOTG are pretty awful. I just bought my son all of the Imaginext mystery bag figures for $3 each and we’ve opened 6 out of 10. They look great, have decent articulation AND each come with 2 GOOD accessories (based on the picture above, the GOTG accessories look like crap)! Sure, they don’t have licensing costs built in like GOTG, but I honestly think this line belongs in the dollar stores!

  5. Wow. I was hoping this would be included in the list of things that hasbro will inevitably cancel. What junk. This not selling will be their excuse to stop making the things we do want.

  6. Yes sir $30 US. The only new Marvel toys I find up here (NE Mass) is the crap stuff. Somewhere in Denver CO a guy has a Legends Rocket and Black Widow. I have Amazing Spider-Man 2 Stealth Skate and 2 inch Guardians. Thats life.

  7. I bought a pack and I had a lot of fun, these are cool for kids and collectors alike, you can carry them around and play with on the go (just don’t lose them).

  8. Just found the ships for these at a local TRU, they come with a figure (nothing “new”) and they looks pretty good. I guess at 3 3/4 making ships would be a bit more of a risk? Seems like Hasbro is pretty much just doing kids junk toys and Legends for collectors with no inbetween anymore.

  9. Crap! Imagine, making toys for kids instead of collectors? And with a movie in which the Collector appears even.

  10. Wish I had seen the reviews before buying for my 6 yr old son. He LOVES Guardians of the Galaxy and walks around quoting the dialog and singing the songs. As soon as we opened one of the packages, he moved the legs on Star-Lord and it came off. Very cheaply made.

  11. So been looking since August for the 3.75 size of GOTG characters. My niece loves action figures and we’ve got all of the Avengers and the ships they have (maybe missing one/two) but we got a bunch. I didn’t worry too much but cause she hadn’t seen the movie until last month. But then went into deep hunt. What I don’t get is I see they have the new Avengers: Age Of Ultron characters in the standard 3.75 size. So disappointed they went this route. We play together and the tiny ones . The really large ones are too big and the medium size doesn’t match up with any other size of the Marvel figures. I see they have the Legends line but I think they are $21.99, so I’d be spending a quite a lot to replace the dozen or so action figures we have to go to the Legends line. Does anyone know why they did this? I thought this was a shared universe. Kind of frustrated cause got to tell her it’s a no go. Glad I figured this out by finding your site, thought I was going crazy.
