Though much of the focus on Kotobukiya at San Diego Comic Con 2013 was focused on their upcoming Avengers Marvel NOW ARTFX+ statues, the Kotobukiya Fine Arts statues line made itself known with two brand new 1/6 scale statues. From the X-Men side of the Marvel Universe, the 2014 Kotobukiya Juggernaut and X-Force Psylocke statues have now made their public debuts at SDCC 2013!
The Fine Arts Psylocke X-Force Kotobukiya statue will feature an alternate left arm so that you can either have Psylocke dual-wielding katanas or have her left arm equipped with her trademark psyblade. Hopefully the psyblade will be molded in transparent plastic to improve the look somewhat, as it doesn’t look all that great right now. Of course, the psyblade isn’t exactly this Marvel Kotobukiya statue’s biggest hurdle to overcome…
Things plummet downhill for this Kotobukiya X-Force Psylocke Fine Arts Statue when you see it up-close, however. To be blunt, this Psylocke looks like she’s a ninja by day and working in the red light district by night. I’m going to give Kotobukiya the benefit of a doubt and assume that this was a hand-painted prototype of the Psylocke X-Force statue that was a rush-job in order to have on-hand for SDCC 2013.
And then we come to the statue that is bigger both in notoriety and in sheer size and weight–the first ever Kotobukiya Juggernaaut statue! Though the Juggernaut is unquestionably an ‘A-List’ villain in the Marvel Universe, he doesn’t always get his fair share of merch due to being monstrously huge. That’s why it’s a total treat that we’re getting a rare 1/6 scale Juggernaut statue as part of the Kotobukiya Marvel Fine Arts line.
Better still, the Juggernaut statue is being designed and sculpted by Erick Sosa, one of my absolute favorite sculptors. Erick Sosa sculpted the first statue I ever bought from any company–the original Bowen Designs Deadpool statue that was released in 2005. I still have that statue and display it to this day, and I’m loving that I’ll be able to add a Juggernaut companion to my Sosa Deadpool statue next summer! These Juggernaut photos were first posted on Sosa’s Facebook page, and give a great up-close look at the Juggernaut Kotobukiya statue.
The Kotobukiya X-Force Psylocke statue is scheduled to be released in February 2014, with the Kotobukiya Juggernaut Fine Arts statue following in Summer 2014. I’ll update with official photos, pricing details and pre-order links once Kotobukiya reveals more specifics for these statues.
