Regular readers know that I’m not quite a fan of the typical Kotobukiya Bishoujo Marvel statues. That said, Kotobukiya definitely got my attention last week when they revealed the concept sketch for a Jubilee Bishoujo statue before New York Comic Con 2013 even began! I suspected we wouldn’t see any further sneak peeks of Jubilee (that sounded dirty) at the show, but I made Kotobukiya an early stop at NYCC 2013 nonetheless. I was rewarded for my efforts with a release date for the Kotobukiya Jubilee and a glimpse at some upcoming statues, including the Bishoujo Spider-Woman sculpt being shown for the first time ever…
You know how sometimes Spider-Man or Daredevil will squat down into a crouching pose on top of a gargoyle statue or some such when stalking a super-villain? Yup–that’s exactly what I’m certain the Kotobukiya artists envisioned when they hatched this design for Spider-Woman. If you’re imagining anything to the contrary, it’s just your dirty imagination at work. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Seriously, though–so far, so good for the Bishoujo Spider Woman Kotobukiya statue. This isn’t nearly as ridiculous as the DC Bishoujo Starfire mounted on a phallic rock base that was also shown at NYCC 2013, so I can learn to live with this design.
The basic sculpt of this piece thus far looks excellent, and while I’m not a Jessia Drew fan in the least, I’m mildly curious to see if Kotobukiya decides to do a Bishoujo Spider Woman II Julia Carpenter statue for SDCC 2014 (I’d be shocked it they didn’t, honestly).
There weren’t many other upcoming Bishoujo items on display at the show, but I did stop to take some photos of the Jubilee design card and the impending Psylocke X-Force Bishoujo statue.
I was definitely a little bit disheartened to see the October 2014 Kotobukiya Jubilee release date on the placard for the piece at New York Comic Con 2013, but I suppose I’ve waited the better part of my life for a high-end Jubilee collectible–I can stand to wait one more year (just make the Jubilee statue good, Kotobukiya–please!).
As far as pose and sculpt goes, the Kotobukiya X-Force Psylocke Bishoujo statue is easily my favorite Bishoujo that Kotobukiya has ever designed. Rather than looking like a slutty sexcat, Psylocke looks like the formidable badass ninja that she is. I’m definitely looking forward to the Bishoujo Psylocke being released in time for the holidays in December 2013 (not that I would ever ask a friend or family member for a Bishoujo statue as a gift, for obvious reasons).
The Kotobukiya Bishoujo Spider-Woman Statue is scheduled to be released in May 2014, with pre-orders likely going up toward the end of 2013. I’ll post an update once Kotobukiya sends out updated, painted prototype photos of the Spider-Woman Bishoujo statue.
