The Marvel Mystery Minis Series 1 figures and packaging looked complete and ready to go at the 2014 Toy Fair last month, and now the Marvel Mystery Minis are upon us! And surprise–there’s not one, not two, not three, but four Hot Topic exclusive Marvel Mystery Minis vinyl figures! And if you’re a completist, be afraid: one of them is one per 144 blind boxes…
Hot Topic will have a total of four exclusive Funko Marvel Mystery Minis Series 1 variants, which will be mixed in among the other blind boxes in each case of 24 Marvel Mystery Minis Series 1 vinyl bobble-heads sold at Hot Topic: Orange Deadpool (2/24), X-Force Deadpool (2/24), Glow-in-the-Dark Hulk (2/24) and Translucent Flames Dark Phoenix (1/144).
That basically means that there will be one translucent flames Dark Phoenix Marvel Mystery Minis variant per six cases. Yikes! With that kind of a rarity, I think I’ll make myself be happy with the regular Dark Phoenix variant instead!
The X-Force Deadpool is a fantastic choice for an exclusive, as it’s a beloved Deadpool costume that’s still niche enough that not every fan is going to want it. The orange Deadpool costume isn’t nearly as popular, but I’m in hopelessly in love with it anyway and glad that Funko is giving the orange costume its day in the sun.
The Funko Glow-in-the-Dark Hulk Mystery Minis figure is honestly a bit weird, as the glow-in-the-dark plastic used is totally white without a hint of green. Even so, I always enjoy Glow-in-the-Dark vinyl figure variants that make sense (unlike the Glow-in-the-Dark Captain America that turned up last week), and I’m excited to have the first glow-in-the-dark Hulk toy that I can remember ever being released by any company.
Thus far I haven’t heard of the Funko Marvel Mystery Minis Series 1 cases being found anywhere but at Hot Topic stores, but I expect online retailers and other brick-and-mortar stores (like Barnes and Noble) to get the series in within the next couple of weeks. You can also check out the current listings for the Deadpool variants and Glow-in-the-Dark Hulk that are online right now, as the variants are currently selling for a respectable $20-$30 each.
What do you think of the four Hot Topic Funko Marvel Mystery Minis Exclusives, Marvel collectors? Are any of these variants cool enough to motivate you to enter a Hot Topic store? And is anyone actually planning to try to ‘blox’ a Translucent Flames Phoenix variant?
I actually got the 1/144 pheonix on my first box! No joke!
